All Treat, No Tricks: A Soul-Soothing Potion for All Hallow’s Eve

Nourish your soul with this crimson-hued immunity-boosting potion…

The pumpkins are carved, the leaves raked. The apples? Picked and (hopefully) baked into pies. The harvest season is coming to a close, and as the moon sets on October, All Hallows Eve shimmers into view. A day reserved to honor the souls of the past and tend to our own with a trick and maybe a treat or two, October 31st possesses a certain kind of magic, even after you’ve moved on from ringing doorbells and sorting through sweets collected in a pillowcase.

Halloween has always been a favorite of mine, one of the few times per year I can break out my most truly outrageous vintage pieces and try a new persona on for size. But I’ll confess, as someone with a mean sweet tooth, it can be difficult to resist the temptation of the Halloween candy aisle that unfairly pops up in late August and doesn’t let up until all that’s left is pumpkin spice candy corn (ech… but I’m not above it). While I believe firmly in treating one’s self, this year I’m taking a new approach to All Hallows Eve by taking a break from the candy and cocktails often present on this festive day and indulging my soul with a little self-care. A simple meditation on the season, maybe a yoga practice, and if a Halloween party presents itself? I’ll arrive with the nourishing, non-alcoholic potion below. Filled with immunity-boosting vitamin C, antioxidants, and inflammation-fighting nutrients, this sparkling pressed juice “cocktail” isn’t just good for you — it’s delicious. Not too sweet, with a bite of ginger, it’s the kind of Halloween treat that makes you feel wicked while remaining 100% healthy. Read on to learn about the benefits, then whip up a batch of your own. I’ve provided measurements for about 6 servings, but also included what you’d need for a (Halloween) party of one.

Beets: Rich in vitamin C, fibre, manganese (excellent for bone health and kidney and liver function), potassium and folate.

Ginger: Eases digestive issues, reduces inflammation, relieves muscular and menstrual pain.

Orange: Good source of vitamins C and B, fibre.

Pomegranate: Excellent source of antioxidants, promotes blood circulation, may ease feelings of depression in women.

Dragon fruit: Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, good source of polyunsaturated fats, good source of carotene.

All Hallow’s Eve Healing Potion

(Makes about 6 servings*)

Ingredients:

3 beets with greens

2” knob fresh ginger

2 oranges, peel and seeds removed as best you can

3 apples

3 carrots

1-2 pomegranates

1 dragon fruit

1-2 bottles plain sparkling water

Tools: Juicer, serving glasses

Method:

Rinse produce thoroughly, including fruits and vegetables with peels as even organic produce often has bacteria on the skin that can be transferred when the fruit or vegetable is sliced. Split and de-seed the pomegranate (try our method). Split the dragon fruit and scoop out the flesh, slice into thin pieces.

Run beets, beet greens, ginger, orange, apples and carrots in that order though the juicer, reserving juice in a large jar or pitcher.

To serve: Pour juice into serving glasses and top off with sparkling water (slowly! It will bubble like a cauldron!). Garnish with pomegranate seeds and a slice of dragon fruit. Serve immediately.

Alternate serving suggestion. Add juice and a bottle or two of sparkling water to a punch bowl. Spoon in pomegranate seeds and a few slices of dragon fruit. Allow guests to serve themselves, with additional garnishes on the side.

*This juice is also fantastic for the everyday. To make one serving use the following measurements:

1 beet with greens

Small chunk of fresh ginger

½ an orange, peel and seeds removed as best you can

1 apple

1 carrot

Pomegranate seeds and dragon fruit, to taste

Splash of sparkling water

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

This is such a great treat for halloween. I have all ingredients handy except pomegranate. What could be a good red fruit replacement. I really can’t wait to try. Thanks for sharing such simple yet very healthy smoothie recipe.
