Diary From the Bath

Do we ever really appreciate doing nothing, without some sort of distraction?

It’s something we all experience —  falling in and out of routines, sometimes without realising it. So it’s good to step back and evaluate how we’re spending our time, and considering making healthy changes. During the summer, life is more carefree; the days are longer, we become more spontaneous. Then winter arrives, and we tend to go into hibernation mode, which is when we can fall deeper into those routines. Last week, I decided to take a 30-minute bath every day, to pull myself away from life and enjoy some good old fashioned me time. No phones, no work emails, no social media, no television. Because when do we ever get to appreciate doing nothing, without some sort of distraction?

Monday: The Full Monty.

Today was a chilly day in London, and my bus journey home felt longer than normal, so an evening of major relaxation was much needed. I decided to dive right in with the full works –- I’m talking bath bomb, face mask, exfoliating body scrub, bath salts, nail varnish, candles and music. Full indulgence. The stresses of the day dissipated almost instantly, and that calmness continued well in to the evening, followed by one of the best night’s sleep I have had in a long time.

Tuesday: Homemade teabags.

This morning my alarm went off 30 minutes early, and I must say, it was a lot easier to get out of bed knowing I was going to enjoy a long relaxing soak at day’s end. After last night’s pampering, I wanted something refreshing, so made a quick and easy herb ‘bath teabag’ using some spare fabric. I’d read that the blend of lemon and rosemary helps clear your mind, which is precisely what I needed ahead of a busy workday. I peeled some lemon rind and picked some rosemary from the garden, et voila! Other blends you can try are lavender and rose petals for calming, sage and tea tree for balancing, and eucalyptus and peppermint to help clear sinuses.

Wednesday: Swapping TV for the tub.

Got home late after dinner with a friend, and rather than spending the last hour of my evening watching TV, I swapped it for a long bath. Tonight’s menu was fresh flower petals, botanical oil and my favourite podcast. Bliss, for both my body and mind.

Thursday: But first… Coffee.

What better way to enjoy that first coffee of the day than in a warm bath! Today I felt super motivated and ready to get stuff done, so I treated this as a morning meeting with myself (whilst wearing a facemask!) I kept a notepad down the side of the bath, went through my day’s agenda and put a plan of action together. This is great way to gather your thoughts, keep a clear head, and enhance your productivity.

Friday: Book Club.

My perfect Friday night in the winter normally involves a night in and a glass of wine, and tonight was no exception. I took the time to read through that book I got as a gift, but haven’t made the time to properly look through yet, and I enjoyed that euphoric feeling we all get on a Friday knowing the whole weekend is ahead.

Haha, I love this post format on baths! It makes it really fun to read. Now I want to take a bath, but I don’t have a bathtub, sob.

Love this! Thanks for sharing, Lisa. I never was a bath person until I took my first bath in a long time the other day after a hard day at work. It was amazing. It felt great to completely relax and let off all the day’s stresses and sores not to mention that I slept so well that night!

This sounds amazing. I wish I had a bath in my flat, one of the things I was really looking forward to doing when coming home for Christmas was a nice long soak in the tub
