FP Let’s Move: Meet Rachel Moore

Good-to-know tips from one of our NY FP Let’s Move wellness instructors (and a world-traveling badass, at that)…

Have you ever wanted pack up only your dearest possessions, leave the world you know behind, and set sail to explore this beautiful planet? (I sure have…) Well, friends, that’s just what Rachel Moore and her husband did. “I grew up on the beaches of southern California. I now live aboard my 42-foot sailboat ‘Agape’ with my husband. We are beginning a five-year sail around the world, with our current home being Mexico.” Rachel knows a thing or two about remaining healthy while living life on the road (err, water). Whether she is rock climbing, sailing the deep blue sea, or delivering goods to communities in need, wellness as a priority while traveling can pose quite a challenge.

Read on as Rachel candidly shares tips on working out, beauty and wellness while on the go.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day for the last few years has been so different. Now that we have begun our trip, I’m looking forward to slowing down and starting new, healthy routines. The last few weeks, upon anchoring at a new spot, we’ll start the morning off reading with coffee and a healthy breakfast, followed by an afternoon of hiking, paddle-boarding or snorkeling. We often catch our own fish and grill up fish tacos or filets for lunch and dinner.

What are some of your pre- and post-workout beauty routines?

Normally, before a workout, I make sure to wash my face (if I’m wearing any makeup). Then I apply a homemade moisturizer (fractionated coconut oil, with a few drops of essential oils including lavender, frankincense, sandalwood, cypress, cedar wood, tea tree and lemongrass), and apply sunscreen if I’ll be working out outside.

What does your traveling workout routine look like?

I enjoy so many different activities. I’m constantly changing up my routine — rock climbing, beach volleyball, hiking/backpacking, yoga and scuba/free diving.

How do you stay motivated to work out?

I have a hard time going to the gym and doing a normal workout routine. For me, being active and healthy means always moving and playing — movement means I’m having fun! It’s never a chore, or a thing to tick off the list each day, I look forward to a run on the beach or paddle boarding for a few hours with a friend.

What does your pre-workout routine look like? How do you properly warm up and mentally prepare?

I always try to eat a light, healthy snack and make sure I’m well hydrated. Depending on the activity, I’ll warm up with a light jog or stretch. Mentally, I try to slow it down. Often I have to make a to-do-today list, or organize my thoughts before I can really focus on the task at hand.

What is the best way to come down after an intense workout?

My favorite thing to do after a big workout is to take a hot shower and have a cup of herbal tea while stretching lightly. The hot water loosens up tight muscles and the tea helps rehydrate.

If you could pick your fave FP beauty products, what would they be and why?

Sun Project Water Sun Cream, since I’m constantly exposed to sun and water. Kapuluan Cold Pressed Coconut Oil — coconut oil is my favorite way to moisturize face and body. Organic Enzyme Exfoliating Mask, because exfoliating is often the key to keeping skin looking fresh. Blemish Be Gone for those little spots that unexpectedly pop up.

What is one beauty product everyone should use after a workout?

A good moisturizer! Gotta keep that skin hydrated!

What are some of your traveling beauty secrets?

Coconut oil is one of my favorite face/body/hair moisturizers, and it’s easy to find, regardless of where you are. Also staying hydrated — the best thing you can do for your skin is drink lots of water!

Best travel advice you’ve ever received?

Travel often — it’s the only way to slow down time. When you visit someplace now, you are exiting your normal routine and creating new memories and new connections in your brain. Have you ever noticed that a week in a new place with often stand out in your mind years later, compared to a normal week at home? Always change things up, from the places you visit to the foods you eat and even the way you work out.
