Quickie Wellness: Freaky Health Chocolate

Chocolate can actually be pretty good for you…

We all know that we should be eating better. That we should be putting things into our bodies that will help us function better, that keep us feeling and looking good, that serve a purpose as far as health goes.

So we blend a green smoothie in the morning. We load up on healthy fats and mineral-rich produce. We swap zucchini noodles for the real thing. We learn to actually like the taste of almond milk in our coffee instead of cream. We make better choices all day long—and we genuinely feel great about it, too—but then we get that pang. That “pay attention to me!” nagging that won’t go away. That craving for just a little bite of something sweet. You reach for that bar of chocolate telling yourself you’ll only eat one square. If that celebrity in the interview you just read swears she can satisfy a day’s worth of cravings and maintain her healthy body with just one bite of 98% cacao dark chocolate, well by george, so can you!

But then you come to 10 minutes later, staring at an empty chocolate wrapper in your hands, no remains in sight and no memory of eating the whole thing. You, my friend, have just emerged from a chocolate fugue state. (No shame, we’ve all been there.) And while there’s no need to beat yourself up over this—your choices are your choices, and don’t let anyone ever tell you differently or shame you into feeling crappy about something you’ve made the decision to eat—there is a way to make sure that the chocolate you’re enjoying is actually working for you.

If I told you there were chocolate bars out there that could boost immunity, give you energy and make your skin glow, you’d probably think I was crazy, and for good reason. For so long, we’ve been told that anything with sugar, anything that could satisfy a sweet tooth, was bad for the body. And while most average candy bars are packed with refined sugar and low-grade cacao that won’t do anything on the good health front, there does exist a mythical chocolate trio that can be your friend.

Don’t believe me? Let me introduce you to the reigning queen of good-for-you sweets, Freaky Health Chocolate.

Free of processed sugars, dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat, soy and additives, Freaky Health Chocolate is more than just a healthier version of your standard bar. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything like it in a candy aisle.

It’s no secret that chocolate can actually be pretty good for you—the right kind of cacao is filled with antioxidants, minerals and mood-boosting compounds. But Freaky Health Chocolate takes it way further than that. Not only are the bars sweetened exclusively with organic mulberries, the cacao is wild-harvested, organic and fair-trade, and each features a special blend of tonic herbs, superfoods and adaptogens to serve your body.

What is an adaptogen, you ask? In short, they’re herbs that have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine to boost energy and resilience. They support your adrenals, the glands that help your body manage stress, anxiety and fatigue, and adapt their function to your body’s needs so they work in gentle harmony with what your system without the fear of crashing—hence the name. When combined with cacao, these Sun Potion-supplied superfoods bind beautifully with the high fat content of the cacao butter, which in turn helps the body absorb them even better. (Remember, some good fat is necessary when it comes to making sure the body is able to take in everything it needs.)

And since each bar serves a unique purpose, Freaky Health Chocolate is basically the choose your own adventure of dessert.

Want to eat your way to a stronger immune system?

Keep your defenses up and your body strong with the Immunity Bar, which combines the powers of reishi, ashwaganda and chaga.

Known as the “queen healer mushroom,” reishi is often used to fight inflammation, and boost immune function and mental clarity. If the reishi has your immune system running too well, the chaga is there to regulate and slow it down, normalizing blood pressure and soothing blood vessels. And then the ashwaganda steps in to work its restorative magic, toning the immune system and reducing the effects of mental, emotional and physical stress.

Ready to ditch that fourth cup of coffee?

The Energy Bar can be that extra jolt you need thanks to the maca, chlorella and goji in its formulation.

One of the most nutrient-dense superfoods in the world, chlorella will first work to detox your body. When all those pathways are cleared, it’ll promote higher levels of energy with its powerful blend of chlorophyll, protein, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Then there’s goji, whose high levels of vitamin C are responsible for the body’s ability to feed the cells that convert food into energy. And maca—also known as “Peruvian Ginseng”—is rich in vitamin B12 and protein, both of which can help increase endurance and alleviate mood swing.

Glowing skin your end game?

Bet you thought chocolate couldn’t be part of the great skin equation, but the Beauty Bar is here to prove that wrong.

First and foremost, the fat in cacao butter great for skin and the bar’s Himalayan pink sea salt is deeply mineralizing. Then there’s the ultra-hydrating power of rose petals,  which are also thought to help with stress relief (and we all know what a big part stress can play in the health and happiness of our skin). Combine all this with He Shou Wu, an ancient herb known to tonight and nourish blood, hair, skin and nervous system, and tocos, a phenomenal source of vitamins D and E, both of which promote healthy skin and the connective tissue that keeps it that way, and you’re looking at truly nourished, soft and luminous skin, hair and nails…all thanks to chocolate.

So make dessert your friend. Give yourself permission to eat that whole bar of chocolate without blacking out. Eat your way to a body that can do, move, create and live to the best of its ability.
