Fresh AER: Vapour Takes Deodorant to the Next Level

The result of five passionate years of ingredient research and product testing, AER is Vapour’s way of nurturing wellness and confidence in all who wear it…

Necessity is the mother of invention. When Vapour CEO and co-founder Krysia Boinis learned she had breast cancer, eliminating toxins from her daily routine became paramount. In her research, she came to to learn that conventional antiperspirants and deodorants are potentially the most toxic of personal care products.

Since that day in the doctor’s office 12 years ago, she tried every alternative available, and it became immediately apparent there was a lot of room for improvement. So began her journey to create a solution both effective and pleasurable to use.

Enter AER. And more from Krysia and co-founder and Formulator Kristine Keheley below!

Can you give us a little more insight into what makes conventional antiperspirants so potentially toxic? And why the switch to a natural substitute might be the way to go?

Krysia: “Conventional antiperspirants and deodorants are among the most toxic products we apply. During my first cancer diagnosis it was the first item that my doctor suggested I eliminate.

“Aluminum salts, phthalates, propylene glycol and other conventional deodorant ingredients hinder the bodies natural detoxification pathways. Most detoxification occurs through the liver and kidneys. These systems become overloaded by daily exposure to toxic chemicals in food, air and personal care products. The body gets rid of this excess through sweat. Choosing a plant-based deodorant like AER supports natural detoxification and is the most healthful personal care product choice we can make. I consider AER to be Vapour’s biggest contribution to personal health yet.”

Do the “scents” of AER  tout any specific healing benefits themselves?

Kristine: “Scent is subjective…[with that,] these are my experiences. Everyone else’s are equally valid.

“Ginger and grapefruit are warming and uplifting. I think of this blend as enhancing circulatory flow on the physical and emotional planes. Lavender Myrrh is ethereal to me — a comforting embrace that raises our mind and opens the crown chakra. Palo Santo Blood Orange is Solar Plexus all the way…our force of will and our identity as spiritual beings uniting with the earthly body. This scent is grounding and invites us to recognize what is holy about our embodiments.”

I love the yin/yang element of Krysia’s and Kristine’s working relationship. Can you tell us a little bit more about the rewards/challenges of making AER?

Kristine: “AER is a great example of our collaborative process. Krysia was fierce about us needing to add a deodorant to Vapour. I was equally passionate about it needing to be in a radically new format and use elegant scent profiles. We push each other from our different perspectives, but where we meet and unite is what has created Vapour.”

Krysia: “For me, AER next level deodorant is the most rewarding product Vapour has launched to date. AER embodies my personal passion and desire to share health and wellness with others because AER replaces one of the most toxic of all personal care products people use on their bodies every day. Kristine and I both wanted AER to be something beyond what anyone had experienced. The development process pushed us into new territory, blending our passions for performance, innovation, elegance and wellness.”

Your favorite of the 4 elements:

Kristine: “Air is the element that informs me most as a creative force. It is invisible and sensual, yet powerful. As a lover of scent I see air as its vehicle. Perfume is carried on the air. Air has an archetypal presence as the search for knowledge and the sword of divine justice. Through the power of breath, we live and find contemplative peace. I love watching the invisible power of the wind in the trees. I relax into a warm breeze across my skin in the summer. In winter, the intensity of a cold wind clears the mind and demands witness to the power of the natural world.”

Krysia: “Born in the cardinal water sign of Cancer, water is definitely my most resonant element. I identify with its core nature… water carves through stone, not because of its force, but because of its persistence. I also enjoy playing in the water element in all its forms: from downhill skiing to scuba diving to soaking in hot springs, steam baths or a walk in the rain.”

You can make natural deodorant yourself using coconut oil, mango butter, beeswax and baking soda. If you like, you can add an essential oil or two of your choosing for fragrance. Most body care / cosmetics can be made at home, actually. What you’re really paying companies for is convenience.
