Good News to Make You Feel Good, Week of 10/22/17

Your healthy dose of feel-good current events in pop culture, fashion, travel, science, and everything in between…

And with a soft sigh, the latest round of carefree weekly updates has arrived, showcasing 10 topical reports cherry-picked to deliver an opportuuunity to chill out and deeply breathe in that soon-to-be-Saturday scent of easy times that lie so very directly ahead.

Take the chance to unapologetically recline, perhaps in a marshmallow-puffy robe, and lounge with some harmless (yet fascinating) stories selected to give you some clickable, likeable current events that are finally worth sharing with your favorites.

Peruse, ponder, audibly “awww,” lol a little, and enjoy the good news you might have missed:

Searching for the life we all dream of, a wild badger snuck through a tiny cat door, ate its fill of cat food, and took a luxurious nap in a plush cat bed until it was finally discovered impersonating the comfortable pet. “SPCA Officer Connie O’Neil, who came face-to-face with the cozy creature, said getting the animal to leave took some effort.”

Farmed by scuba divers and resembling a colony of mirrored orbs and chefs-hat-shaped balloons, this subterranean experiment is producing strawberries that float from the seafloor. Launched in 2012 off the coast of Italy, the study in environmentally friendly ways to harvest food has already proven one thing- plants grow even faster under water.

Fulfilling every spangle’s sweet sweet fantasy, Mariah Carey and Karl Lagerfeld — two unapologetically opinionated icons — revealed that they’ve been best friends all along. Watch Carey serenade Lagerfeld — each bedecked in their own glittering black ensemble — at his birthday party with her 2008 firepower jam, “Touch My Body,” where the famously bored fashion icon later stepped out of his chair to affectionately hold her hand.

The title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” goes to Colorado’s 11-year-old Gitanjali Rao, who created a lead-detecting water sensor that works better than the adult-established methods we’ve been using for decades. When asked how she came up with such a brilliant design, the seventh-grade problem solver told Business Insider, “The idea just came to me when I saw my parents testing for lead in our water. I went, ‘Well, this is not a reliable process and I’ve got to do something to change this.’”

A pet costume that’s worth it

Leo DiCaprio takes on the streets of New York in his favorite hat! Rolling through town on a Citi Bike wearing his infamous look-but-don’t-touch fashions like cargo shorts and ankle socks, a dayglo helmet is the only sartorial essential that could further his command of the cherished teenage-grandpa genre.

“A quiet and modest life brings more joy than a pursuit of success bound with constant unrest,” said beloved German-American physicist Albert Einstein. This, along with another note scribbled onto hotel stationary, is one of the secrets to happiness that the soft-hearted genius imparted after being given news that he would receive a Nobel Prize.

Because of the 90s pop horror hit I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prince Jr. maintain their status as America’s Tenderest Low-Key Sweethearts thanks to meeting on set decades ago. Now, in this 20th birthday celebration, see how the film’s fashion staples are coming back for another v memorable season.

Raccoons pulled in unprecedented grades on Aesop’s Fable, a famous intelligence test that the little rascals technically passed by completely ignoring the guidelines. Much of their innovative success relied on the afterhours creatures’ instincts to “use their own particular superpower, their sensitive and agile hands, to explore the world.”

“You can’t talk to anybody, in any culture, in any language, in any age group, that doesn’t know what you’re talking about,” says Lise Abrams, a psychology professor who has studied the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon for over 20 years. Here, a deeper explanation of why you can’t remember the name of that person from that thing until hours pass and now no one is listening…
