How to Stay Nourished On Your Next Outdoor Adventure

HUM Nutrition’s resident Director of Education, Sarah Greenfield, shares some of her favorite go-to snacks before taking in the Great Outdoors…

Before heading outside on your next hike or weekend camping/glamping trip, consider and plan how to maintain your energy levels, naturally. Here is a list of some of the foods I like to take with me!

When hiking…

Gluten-free almond butter (and jelly) sandwich — A great source of energy and can provide long-lasting energy. It’s also easy to digest so it won’t slow you down.

Coconut jerky — A great way to get high quality fat and to keep you full longer.

Rice cakes + avocado — Easy to carry and a good source of healthy fat and complex carbs to give you long-lasting energy to avoid a crash.

Electrolyte powder — I always take this with me when I am going to be doing a long outdoor activity. When you are sweating, you aren’t just losing water, but also electrolytes, so repleting them is crucial. It can also help prevent headaches if you are prone to getting.

Use running fuel for easy energy — jelly beans, shot block, energy waffles are a great way to have easy-to-access energy on hand.

Here is a list of foods I like to have on hand if I’m afforded time to pre-plan. Glamping is a great way to get out into nature without having to tote everything you need, so you can get a little more adventurous with the foods you bring!

When glamping…

Kale salad — Getting some veggies when you are camping is so important and not always easy. Kale is sturdy and you can dress it and keep it for a day or two without getting soggy.

Zucchini — Great to grill up!

Veggie burgers — Good source of fiber and a great way to get veggies while you are out and about.

Oatmeal — A great way to start the day! Sometimes camping can take you out of your normal eating routines, so making sure you get your fiber is important in maintaining regularity.

Snack hacks!

Bring premixed pancake mix in a Ziploc bag. When you are ready to make breakfast, you can snip off a corner for easy pouring.

Pre-crack your eggs and store them in a water bottle — takes up less space and travels well.

Take a coffee filter, fill with coffee and tie the top with dental floss. You can soak this in water like tea have fresh coffee.

Our family started with grilled zucchini as a side dish to the BBQ meats, we loved it so much, so we started to notice that we skip the meats more and more often.
