Office Style: Meet Meghan

“Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t compare your body, or your style, or really anything. I wish I’d embraced myself a little more a little sooner.”

Your position at Free People…

Design Assistant for Cut & Sew Knits.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A fashion designer. Sounds cliche, but I literally made the decision when I was 5. I was always cutting up my Barbie’s clothes to turn them into something I thought looked cooler. I always joke that I’m just that stubborn — when I put my mind to something I become a little hell-bent on making it happen.

What does your typical work day look like?

Mostly mocking new styles, sketching & responding to about a thousand emails with vendors, production & buying. It can get a little crazy, but it’s worth it.

Favorite part of your job?

Mocking into a style or concept I feel really strongly about. I love finding a fabric or silhouette and using that as inspiration to create something new.

Describe your personal style…

I keep my style pretty simple. I love a classic white blouse & jean pairing, with a bunch of gold accent jewelry. I spent so many years figuring out what was flattering for my body shape/short frame. Now that I feel like I’ve finally figured that out [hello tailoring!], I want to have more fun with it. I find myself gravitating towards more bright colors and funkier patterns, lately. I also love a little sparkle now & then.

What makes you feel confident?

I feel most confident when I’m cooking in my kitchen, IN jeans & a t-shirt, just listening to music & dancing around.

Who is your style icon?

Miroslava Duma was my first style crush — she’s short like me so I felt like I could really look to her for style inspiration. But I feel like my personal style is more influenced by Audrey Hepburn & Brigitte Bardot.

What are your beauty + wellness must-haves?

Bobby Brown eyebrow pencil!

Alba moisturizer

Hula Bronzer

Peppermint essential oils

Dry shampoo

Aesop Geranium Leaf Body Balm

Wearing: the Cherry Bomb Crop Top (here in a print), the Island Hopping Hoop Earrings, and the Candyland Clutch

What do you do outside of Free People?

I love thrifting around the city — for furniture, clothes or jewelry. I’m fixing up a vintage lamp right now I found for $10. I also go to a lot of concerts. I’ve seriously lost count of how many I’ve been to in the past year.

If you had to wear one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Levi’s, white blouse, ankle boots & my Labadorite rings [I never take them off].

Favorite place you’ve ever visited and why.

Amsterdam. There’s so much to do around that city. The Rijksmuseum is my favorite. I also just loved biking in the national park & spending hours in the tulip garden.

What song would describe you best?

“This is Love (Feels Alright)” by Camera Obscura.

Most embarrassing outfit you’ve ever worn.

Middle-school-Meg really loved the whole cropped legging & bubble tunic thing. One particular polka dot kelly green combo with grey leggings, matching headband from H&M haunts me to this day.

One piece of advice you’d give your younger self.

Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t compare your body, or your style, or really anything. I wish I’d embraced myself a little more a little sooner.

What’s in your freepeople.com shopping cart?

Hang Time Short
Candyland Clutch
Sadie Tunic
Peaches Midi
Daisy Garden Hoop Earrings
