Office Style: Meet Alyssa

“Fight for what you’re passionate about, no matter how long it takes. You never know when the perfect opportunity will come around and change your life!”

What did you want to be growing up?

I danced ballet for my entire childhood so, as a kid, I wanted to be a ballerina. I also had a strong desire in high school to be a tattoo artist — sometimes I still do. Maybe one day!

Your first job – what/ where?

My first job was waitressing at a small diner in my hometown when I was 15. I was so shy before it. That job really helped me learn how to talk to people and be more confident. I owe a lot to it!

Toughest obstacle you’ve overcome:

Almost losing my mom to her illness two years ago. It’s been tough on my family, but it’s also taught me a lot about appreciating the small things and telling your people you love them often.

Your current position at Free People….

I am the Influencer Gifting Intern on the Creative Marketing Team.

How did you land at FP?

I had applied for other summer internships over the years and was never lucky enough to get them. Then, one day this past summer, a recruiter approached me about a new position she thought I’d be perfect for. When summer ended I just couldn’t leave, so I worked to have my internship extended through fall.

What drew you to it?

I’ve always had a love for Free People. As soon as my friends and I became old enough to go to Philadelphia by ourselves (we grew up in southern NJ), we would always visit the Walnut Street store. Walking in the store always felt like a dream. As I got older and learned about home office and the company culture, I knew it was where I wanted to end up.

Proudest work moment:

My proudest work moment was being given the opportunity to expand my responsibilities beyond just my internship description. In addition to influencer marketing, I now draw illustrations for social. I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw my illustrations on Instagram for the first time! It’s an amazing feeling, being able to combine my loves of marketing and graphic design in a way that helps my team and makes them proud of me!

What advice would you give someone who’d like to be in your role one day?

Definitely never give up. Fight for what you’re passionate about, no matter how long it takes. You never know when the perfect opportunity will come around and change your life!

Favorite part of working at Free People:

My team! I love being inspired by so many smart and creative people. They make magic happen every day. I’m so lucky to have such amazing people to look up to.

Your anthem / theme song?

Flowers in Your Hair by the Lumineers, always.
