Movie Review:Somewhere

We thought we would try something new on our blog today. I went to see ‘Somewhere’ the other month and wanted to share a short review with you. ‘Somewhere’ is Sofia Coppola’s fourth run movie starring Stephen Dorff who plays Johnny Marco – a movie star living in limbo at the very fashionable Chateau Marmont and Elle Fanning who plays Cleo – the mature daughter of an adolescent movie star. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Elle. Her presence was captivating; her fresh look reminded me of typical Marc Jacobs advert.

I had mixed feelings about this film; I can say I didn’t enjoy it as much as her previous ‘Lost in Translation’ and ‘Virgin Suicides’. However the high end hotel, the guy in limbo, the cusp on recovery and the tenderness between two unlikely characters are all familiar feelings that were provoked in Lost in Translation. The difference is that this film is about Hollywood – the place and the ideal, there’s a hint of the sinister side of celebrity land that was a bit hard hitting. A typical lost movie star wanting a way out… bored of the ideal and the materialistic lifestyle that Hollywood offers.

I get comforted by the quietness and the moody feelings that dominant Sofia’s work. She has a great talent with letting you experience a picture through silence.

If you haven’t already seen it yet, you should. Rising star Elle Fanning sure is a one to watch!

As the subtitle suggests the film evokes the thought “sometimes you just need a good reason to grow up”

Inside our closet

If you’re anything like us, you love nothing better than a good old nosey through somebody else’s wardrobe. We always end up feeling inspired! Here’s a little tour though my wardrobe. We hope to post more of these from some of our favorite Free People muses.

My style inspiration is a Rock ‘N’ Roll chic verses a hippie folklore rebel. Tattered sweaters mixed with ditsy florals, holey rock Tees and denim shirts.
My dad is a huge Eagles fan so owning this very rare Eagles in concert shirt is extra special to me. Pattern and texture consume the majority of my wardrobe. I have a huge love for crochet – my favorite item is the crochet swing top that I bought from Free People last summer. I own bags that look like they have been traveled and been on an adventure throughout life, old satchels and run down rucksacks. I collect Native American jewelry, Turquoise and necklaces that have been made in Indian pow wows.

My style developed from looking at Vogue from the tender age of 13, and my dad’s collection of American rock vinyls and books – I used to admire Joni Mitchell, The Stones and get a kick out of seeing bad ass rebel films such as The Wild One with Marlon Brando; I like how denim and leather give you an attitude. Fashion excites me every day and I love owning pieces that are extra special and have meaning behind them.

The Bali Dream

Whenever I need to get inspired in work I locate myself in a different area of our building. Sometimes I need to get away from my desk for an hour or so… Cyber land numbs my mind a little sometimes. I headed to what I think is my favorite area in our building in terms of inspiration –  The store display and the  Fp one area. I sat on the floor looking through the beautiful collection of books there.

I came across books on Bali and thoughts of my travels came following back to me…

I traveled to Bali in the summer of 2009 for a couple of months and got completely caught up in its culture and lived and breathed the experience there. I traveled with one back pack, we hired a scooter with a surf board attached to the side and explored the island that stretches 3,000 miles from east to west and is home to 200 million people.

Here’s a little glimpse of what I experienced in Bali – it gave me the chills pulling these from my facebook album.

A Sunday offering on a beach which finished with everyone dancing and clapping in the ocean. A rice field in Ubud, a shack draped in beautiful dyed scarves, a bungalow where we stayed, the breathtaking sun set that we watched from our window before we went to eat fresh grilled fish on the beach, a crafts market, long beach walks, perfect sets of waves. Night drives on the back of a scooter trying to find places to stay at night.

The place will remain a strong thought in my mind always.

Extreme series part one: Boxy Shapes

I have always been a fan of the oversized look. I usually opt for the two sizes bigger idea when it comes to buying tops  –  I like the way they fall and how much freedom I have to play around with different silhouettes.

Lately bloggers have been catching my eye and the ways they have been styling these extreme XL ideas.

I love this look with maxi skirts with a small section of the top tucked in to give a draping effect or just worn loose to give that relaxed and comfortable feel.

It’s quite a bold idea… how do you guys feel about this look???

Lovely Leopard

Animal Print would you wear it??

Leopard is the type of print I have a love/hate relationship with. I can’t decide… I look at it and think naaaaaaaaaah, and then my conscious slaps me in the face and says “hang on a minute this can be cool”. Then, I bounce around with ideas of how to wear it.

I’m consciously seeing it everywhere lately, and I think it’s growing into a big trend.
I think the way I would wear it would be… in chiffon. It would have to be muted. If I were to go bold with the print it would have to be in sneak peek accessories.

I like seeing people wearing chiffon leopard maxi dresses and shirts too. Ahhhhh, see my mind is all over the place with this print.

I’m very intrigued to see if any of you Fp girls would wear animal print and if so how??

Rider of the Storm

I’ve been obsessing over hats lately like crazy. I see so many cute pictures of girls wearing them with prairie dresses, rock T-shirts and polka dots. Whenever I throw on a hat I feel like a different person… like I’m in character… it’s kinda fun. It makes me feel like I need to be a performer for the day!! I think I need one in my life. There are so many adorable styles out there.

The look I’m chasing at the moment on the hat front is that naïve folksy look, the prairie look made accidentally cool. Mixing a hippie dress with a polka dot shirt, then either a bowler hat or fedora or if I just wanted an easy care free day – a vintage rock tee, dirty denims and yep topped off with any hat.

I gotten hat crazy this month but my life has been made easy with the great selection that is right here on our web.

Turkish Delight

My eyes keep dazzling over these beautiful Mediterranean inspired rings, they look like heirlooms that have come from some royal Turkish family. I tried every single one on my fingers and was captivated with their presence. They look so powerful as if they could cast magic at any given time!

Here’s a little about the designer.

Bora

Born in Turkey, Bora’s experience immersed in Mediterranean culture is one of the many things that inspires the jewelry that he makes today. His dream when coming to the US was to be a musician, but his creativity and imagination led him towards jewelry design, allowing him to use his engineering background to carefully craft his designs with close attention to detail and dimensions. His favorite material to “play” with is oxidized silver as he appreciates the historic quality of the metal, and his pieces are an abstract and interesting addition to any look.

He works from his studio in Brooklyn, NY to create statement jewelry reminiscent of textiles and motifs found in the Mediterranean and his home country of Turkey.

We hear at home office love his work they look extra special on too.

Brighten up your bottoms

I’m the type of person who usually stays in the safe zone when it comes to bottoms, jumping back

and forth with denim, black skirts and skinny trousers.

However, I’m getting a little excited about the evolving printed bottoms trend that is emerging –

Adding a little pretty, pretty to the below the waist is quite appealing. Tone it down by making your top half boy;

Plaid shirts, denim vests and waistcoats. Finish it off by adding a touch of frontier-esque – Throw on a rider

hat and away you go!

Rejoice the Hands

Turquoise and western jewelry always catches my eye, I think it adds a certain special touch to your outfit, and I love to wear it with denim.  I was very excited to hear that Ana Saldana from Rejoice the Hands was going to be featured in our December catalog a couple of months back and her pieces look great in the book; they complete the western adventurer we were trying to capture.

Her jewelry is handmade in Orange County California inspired by nature and the diversity of cultures around the world. We love her natural aesthetic and materials like turquoise, brass, silver and found porcupine quills.

We’re very excited to hold her pieces. They are the essence of true America!!!

You should check out Ana Saldana tumblr (link below) after seeing a picture of Devendra Banhart I was hooked :)

A girl who loves crochet

Ever since I was young I’ve always been intrigued by crafty items and intricate detail. I remember the sensation of watching my Grandma and Mam knit… when the dark wintery nights drew in they used to set up in front of the fireplace with me cuddled under their arms, It was a relaxing, soft feeling watching them at work.

I used to stare at their hands moving so fast, fascinated with the pattern that was rolling from underneath the needles. Ever since, crochet has continued to excite me.

Can you believe the earliest evidence of crochet goes back no further than the 1800’s when it became popular in Europe.  During this period crochet was used as a less costly substitute to create the similar effect that lace has, and if you ask me… I would say the outcome is a little more endearing!

Crochet remained popular through the mid 1970, and then declined a little, but now it has made its way back into 21th century with a huge bang — now the technique is being used on runway shows and in new, fresh fashion forward ways that continue to impress!

Working at Free People is like heaven for me as the knit team here is so crafty, I often find myself drifting upstairs to investigate their new creations – they never disappoint!!

I am over the moon right now… we have just launched a BIG crochet story that was strongly promoted in our December catalog.  It’s a great look to invest in as it one of those old world charms that will never die!
