fp loves…jessica seaton

we’re so excited to introduce you to our new favorite jewelry designer – jessica seaton! here’s the story of jessica, how we found her, and why we love her work.

one fateful day, we were on a shopping trip in venice, CA when we went into a cute little boutique. we stumbled upon some of jessica’s brass & bones collection, and instantly fell in love. jessica happened to be in that very boutique when we were shopping…and the rest is history. she showed us some more of her collection and we knew we had to feature her in our boutique!

jessica, originally a fellow east coast girl who is now living on the west coast, moved to los angeles to pursue a career as a makeup artist. she took up sculpture as her art form, which in turn led her to jewelry design. her current collection was entirely hand sculpted using the method of ‘lost wax’. (lost-wax casting is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artist’s sculpture.) in jessica’s own words, “the collection is entirely hand sculpted using the method of ‘lost wax’, which is a dying art because we live in the day and age of computer generated design and laser cutting…but i think you can feel the energy that was put into the handmade pieces, they carry the energy. i started the collection while i was on a short sabbatical in big sur, ca…finding dropped antler’s around the cabin and property i was living at…people responded to the pieces, which were bit more dramatic back then… and now we have brass and bones…the collection.”

jessica seaton currently lives in venice, CA with her cat bernadette.

philagrafika

the first ever philagrafika festival starts this weekend in philly, and it is expected to be one of the largest art events in the US and the world’s largest print-related exhibition.  this will be a recurring event that celebrates the role of print in contemporary art.   more than 300 artists will be represented at more than 80 venues throughout philly! i really like what artist gunilla klingberg has done with the entrance at moore college:

guest blog post!

good morning! i’m really excited to bring you a guest blog post from andrea of the blog fly, who also happens to be the artist behind our hand drawn floral converse!  read on to learn about where she drew her inspiration for the shoes.

When I was approached by Free People to use my doodle-style illustrations for a small run of sneakers I immediately thought of flower gardens. Aside from the feminine elements that can be associated with Free People and flowers, I really liked the idea of an eclectic garden of quirks and fun, much how I see the brand.

Over the years I’ve collected tons of vintage fabric swatches and ephemera (like magazine clippings and wallpaper scraps) featuring various forms of floral designs. I particularly like to use Secondhand Rose wallpaper swatches and William Morris’ floral designs for references. Using all these elements for inspiration I developed little clusters of tiny flowers, abstract roses, and dingbats to create the doodles for the shoes.

thanks so much andrea, we love your shoes!

more fp-inspired crafts!

after my post about projects inspired by free people this morning, reader krystee sent me these photos of some of her crafts and they’re so awesome i had to post them right away! check ’em out, along with her description of how she made them:

“the stool was inspired by your vanity stool you used to have in the FP store. i went to purchase one and they were gone so i did a lil twist on small decorative one for myself. i used some fabric from and old scarf and beach cover up and extra yarn from my crocheting,  and added the flowers to give it that bright enchanted garden feel.”

“i found the bookshelf in my dad’s shed so i painted them and appliqued on fabric and added the yarn and flowers to make it pop.”

awesome work, krystee! thanks for sharing!
