rachel t. robertson

i discovered the artwork of rachel t. robertson a few weeks ago and i thought it was so reminiscent of our new website creative concept, sweet jasmine.  rachel is a san francisco-based artist who creates whimsical collages reminiscent of a scrapbook, combining nature imagery and mixed media with tiny details like graph paper, envelopes, stamps and thread.

where to stay in marrakech

when our team went to morocco to shoot the april catalog their first stop was marrakech.  they stayed in a gorgeous spot just outside the city, where small streets and alleyways recede into a vast grove of palm trees.  the sounds of the city are a distant memory as you enter a peaceful oasis where oranges grow on trees and roses climb the walls towards your balcony window.  the hotel is called les deux tours and these pictures taken by our producer speak for themselves…

cherry blossom cheer

the girls who work in our virginia stores sent me the following writeup on an event taking place in their area that they love – the national cherry blossom festival!

on march 27th, people began to flock to the DC metropolitan area to witness a breathtaking event – the flowering of the cherry blossoms along the tidal basin! in 1912, japan gave the cherry blossom trees to the citizens of the united states a gift of friendship.  the cherry blossom festival is held every year – this year from march 27th until april 11th, and is located just 5 minutes from our free people store in clarendon, va, and 20 minutes from our tyson’s corner, va location. throughout the two-week festival, customers who visit the stores are inspired by the cherry blossoms, which symbolize the fresh, bright renewal that spring delivers.  the free people girl loves venturing into DC to enjoy the colorful blossoms blooming in her path and to fulfill her love of nature.

beautiful stuff.  based in brooklyn, the wild unknown is a line of handmade goods and artwork inspired by nature, in particular summers spent in the catskill mountains and on the shores of lake superior, as well as their favorite songs and musicians.

i’m such a sucker for feathers. and bob dylan. see more here.

woodstock handmade houses

before woodstock became known worldwide for the most famous music festival of all time, it was a quiet town in rural new york that artisans, painters, musicians and freethinkers called home.  they lived off the land and made things by hand- even their homes.  they used local stone, wood and scavenged materials to create shelters that are as unique as they are impressive- ranging from the cave-like dens and teepees to cabins and stone structures.  these homes are documented in the book “woodstock handmade houses” and turning the pages is like stepping into one hidden world after another, imagining all the stories each sanctuary holds.  it is a constant source of inspiration that will never age.

lollapalooza lineup announced

the lollapalooza lineup is here!

green day and lady gaga? no thank you. soundgarden, arcade fire, strokes, phoenix, MGMT, jimmy cliff, black keys, national, spoon, grizzly bear, wolfmother, yeasayer, the XX, edward sharpe (and i could keep going)? YES PLEASE.

one of the hardest things about festival season is deciding which one to go to, because only in my wildest dreams can i attend them all. this just might be a lollapalooza year, although i still think the sasquatch lineup is the best… lollapalooza will take place august 6th-8th in grant park, chicago.

don’t forget to stay tuned to the blog as a couple of our girls are headed to coachella next weekend – and if you’re going, maybe we’ll see you there!

a suitcase for morocco

the climate in morocco is warm almost all year round, although temperatures do differ depending on where you stay – coastal towns are much cooler and marrakesh can be pretty hot, especially in summer months.  an item like the fes romper would be the first thing in my suitcase because it’s casual and cool for daytime but could be dressed up at night.  for the hot days exploring the medina and sightseeing around the city pack some shorts, a tank and some comfy sneakers or sandals.  layering pieces like the scandalous lace top and irina slip dress are perfect and take up little room in your suitcase, and of course- lots and lots of gold jewelry and a sun hat!

items pictured above are as follows:

1. medina sun hat; 2. 3/4 sleeve scandalous lace top; 3. sunshine for my love dress; 4. golden fern bracelet; 5. fes romper; 6. chaabi chandelier earrings; 7. cast net bag; 8. coin drop belt; 9. cleo lace up sandal; 10. haiku tank; 11. irina slip dress; 12. stained and distressed keds; 13. benji’s linen cargo short.

daniel egneus

a fellow fp girl told me about illustrator daniel egneus and in looking through the work on his website i found myself lost in the realm where fantasy and reality meet.  egneus combines dark, edgy imagery with pops of watercolor and careful and realistic detail with sketchy lines to create images that can only exist in your wildest dreams… but leave you wishing they were real.
