arts & crafts on wheels in austin

if you live in austin or are heading there for sxsw, be on the lookout for the wondercraft!

it’s a vintage airstream trailer (named “stella”) stocked with arts & craft supplies! the wondercraft is the brainchild of four creative ladies who had a goal of bringing supplies to wherever there was a need for artistic expression.  they offer  mobile classes, parties and events and keep their trailer stocked with a unique selecton of inspirational products.  i love it! such a great idea, and the vintage trailer just makes it even better :)

thursday poll – edition 85

last week’s poll was all about feather accessories and the winner, with 28% of the votes, were the lovely feather earrings – nice choice!

this week we have an awesome selection of patchwork items that i am loving…i think it’s really cool how a couple of these styles are one-of-a-kind – each with their own unique wash and patches of fabric collected by our designer in india. which do you like best?

01 magazine group exhibition

we just opened a store in toronto, and for all you readers that live there, here’s an art exhibit definitely worth checking out! it’s a group exhibition presented by 01 magazine – we’ve posted about a couple of the artists involved before (david horvitz, jennilee marigomen) and they’re ridiculously talented. today i wanted to post some of the work of alexander binder because it reminds me so much of our tangerine dream imagery…and it’s just pretty awesome:

animal collective’s visual album

another fp girl sent me this video saying it reminded her of our tangerine dream web graphics – and i agree, with the bright colors and trippy effects. it’s the trailer for oddsac, a visual album by philadelphia video artist danny perez and animal collective.

the band has worked with perez before, and actually just debuted a live art installation with him this past weekend called “transverse temporal gyrus,” at the guggenheim in new york – it got mixed reviews but these photos look pretty cool:

oddsac premiered at sundance and screenings are taking place now in various cities throughout the us- go here for a full list – and you might even be lucky enough to see perez and animal collective there!

pretty lights

i love these creative uses of lights by interior designer jan eleni!

i’m just a fan of string and rope lights in general- i like leaving them up all year round, because they add such a nice soft, warm light.  now i’m tempted to put a big cluster of them on my wall or ceiling…

wednes-diy

at first glance, these look like really pretty ceramic vases, right? take a closer look…

these vases are crafted by german artist markus linnenbrink out of recycled objects (recognize that gatorade bottle now?) and colorful resins.

bottles

you can buy these pieces at artware editions in manhattan. but i’m wondering how hard this would be to do yourself? i mean mine probably wouldn’t look as pretty as his, but still…it seems doable, right? you can buy natural resins online or at art supply stores, and mix them with oil paints to get a glossy finish like these. there are probably lots of other cool ways to decorate them though – if you think of any other ideas let me know!

flower girl

our lazy daisy floral jumpsuit made an appearance on cocorosa’s blog today!

she says, “i simply couldn’t resist the free people throwback romper. i love the bohemian vibe and it’s so easy and comfortable to wear… i could totally visualize myself standing between meadows and wildflowers…… hmmmmmm summer…..”

i love how she’s paired it with a vintage blouse underneath and platform shoes. she looks like she stepped right out of the seventies!

you can find the jumpsuit online, here.

march catalog drops tomorrow!

…and it’s a beauty.  says our creative director: “we wanted to keep it simple on a set rather than on location because we wanted the clothes and the outfits to shine on their own.”

and shine they do- this book makes me so excited for spring flowers and warm sunshine. i could totally see myself wearing any one of these outfits at a concert or music festival!

i’m dying over that outfit on the far right in the middle – the flare jeans, ruffle top and headband – sooo cute. shop the march catalog here!

fp loves…sarah lewis

sarah, a long time member of the free people family, used to work with us here at the home office as an accessories designer, but more recently she has launched her own line of jewelry.  she has a shop in philadelphia called adorn, and her work has won several awards and has been featured in juried shows and exhibitions.  we are so excited to welcome her back as a featured jewelry designer!

a lover of nature, sarah was introduced to metalworking and lapidary (the process of taking raw materials like stones, minerals and gemstones and transforming them into decorative items) while living in arizona.  she loves crystals and minerals and creating simple settings that showcase the natural beauty of the stones, as well as combining materials like glass, silver and stones in unique ways. the result is a small-scale wearable sculpture that is earthy and bohemian, but modern and fashionable.  the use of raw, earthy materials, stones, feathers and dream catchers make her jewelry a perfect fit for the natural, free-spirited girl.  sarah appreciates the preciousness of jewelry, and most of her pieces are one-of-a-kind, making them even more special.

sarah also draws inspiration from everything around her and everything she does, including fashion, travel, music, her family and friends – we are inspired by her and all that she has become!

check out sarah’s jewelry featured throughout the march catalog, and on our website.
