Vegan Leather Makes its Free People Debut

I am beyond excited about the fact that Free People is now launching its very own line of vegan leather pieces! As I mentioned in the video, I am a vegetarian and although it doesn’t bother me when other people wear leather products, it’s not something I can bring myself to do. Which is torture, because working here I see so many amazing leather items that I love – but it seemed only natural that we would do this, being a company that loves animals so much! After months of anticipation, vegan leather is here, and I’m happy to say that my search for the perfect vegan leather jacket has ended :)

In addition to the jacket, the other items online now are the vegan leather pants, vegan leather skirt and vegan leather shorts. I love that these items can be styled in a girly way, with pretty blouses and heels, or in a boyish rock n’ roll way:

And here’s how I styled the pants for the video – I paired them with the concert raglan and sandals for an easy casual look. Clearly the boyish look is more my style :)

Your response will help determine whether we’ll continue to design into this line, so I would love to hear your thoughts on vegan leather!

a bag for coachella

who’s going to coachella this weekend?! unfortunately we aren’t going this year but that doesn’t mean we can’t get in the mindset… here’s a look at what i would bring if i were heading to coachella…

i drew most of my inspiration from the two outfits pictured above.  the outfit at far right is PERFECT- our little plaid cropped bralettes can be worn on their own, over a tank, or under some cute overalls like the puddle jumper romper! add the romana fest sandal and gorgeous rio brillante bag to complete the look. then the next day, wear it with some bright blue cutoff shorts and the embroidered mesh crop top like sasha pivovarova from our april catalog :)

packing lightly and being able to mix and match is key for music festivals – the sophia bikini top would look great with the overalls or just with the cutoffs as well! i would also bring a scarf to either sit on or cover up my hair, which would surely be a mess after dancing in the hot sun all day and into the night. the feather straw fedora and sunglasses would also be in my bag to keep the california sun out of my eyes. and in addition to the sandals i’d bring along some comfy kicks like the muddy waters sneakers.

when i’m at a festival, sometimes i don’t want to worry about carrying a bag so the artists and revolutionaries fanny pack would be ideal, and would hold my small journal and some sunblock. and i’m loving these candy-colored shades of nail polish by chanel! finally, i’m obsessed with the bag charms by the 2 bandits and the cute saba feather clips (on the straw hat and in sasha’s hair above)! clip ’em to your bag, hat, belt loop or right into your hair! the perfect festival accessory.

those are my picks,  click here to go to our festival shop for more inspiration :)

wednes-diy

i’ve never really been one for clothing with the american flag on it…but i would totally love to do this with my shorts and if they came out looking half as good as valerie’s from bleach black i would rock them all the time!

what you need:

a pair of denim shorts

paint pens- she recommends two white and two red

x-acto knife, pencil and ruler

one piece of hard posterboard for stencil (she used the hangtag from the shorts)

2

and here are her instructions:

begin by practicing with your white paint pen, on the inside of your shorts, so you can get used to how the pen works.  once you are ready, prepare your stencil for your shorts.  my star is 1.25″ at the widest point.  cut out star with x-acto knife, and place on shorts.  use stencil to draw the outline of your shorts.  remove stencil, and fill in star with paint pen.  place next star approx 2″ away from next star.  if you end at a seam, draw a small part of the next star, to continue the pattern repeat.  once you are ready with your stripes, begin on the far left seam, using the seam as a ruler.  my red stripes are 1/2″ wide, and approx 3/4″ apart.  continue stripes up to waistband, and on coin pocket, but not on waistband.

sweet! you’re set for the 4th of july, too.

last week’s poll turnout was amazing! 1,525 votes and only 9 votes separated the winner (girl number 5) from second place (girl number one) – and in case you didn’t figure it out, the winner was sandy and second place was candy :)
