i can’t believe tomorrow is new year’s eve!  this year went by outrageously fast…i haven’t even had a second to really think about new year’s, let alone what i’m wearing, but luckily i’ve found some really great DIY ideas that i’m dying to try…

accessories are a great way to dress up a simple outfit on new year’s, so here are a couple of things you can do that will stand out, and probably start some conversations as well!

bleachblack had this brilliant idea involving fool’s gold (remember fool’s gold?) that would be a sweet new years eve accessory…all you need is an old cuff or ring, some pieces of pyrite (fool’s gold) and embellishing glue.  check out the tutorial here.

and i got to thinking, if gold isn’t your thing, this would work with any kind of crystal or gemstones that you can by at a hobby or crafts store…

hair accessories are big right now too…we have quite a few awesome ones on our website right now…but i also love these “wild” hair pieces i saw on design sponge that you can make yourself:

these are made with items you can find in your garden or a store, or leftover holiday decorations- the top one is a peacock feather, poinsettia leaves and a sprig of evergreen wrapped in floral tape- i love it!  check out their full tutorial here.

what are you doing new year’s…

with new year’s eve just a couple days away, i decided to ask what some of our home office team members are doing to celebrate…if you’re still undecided about what’ you’re doing, maybe this will spark some ideas!

i’m taking my son to “new year’s eve with the kids” at north bowl in philly!  it’s a family event where kids can bowl and jam out to some live music, along with other activities.  it starts at 5 and ends at 8pm with a new year’s toast for the adults!

i will be ringing in the new year at the loews hotel downtown in philly!

i’m going to see the radiators from new orleans at my club in ardmore…its called the palombaro club and was originally an italian club to help immigrants get settled here…it’s almost 100 years old. today it is more of a social club but we do lots of charity work.  last year our big project was raising money for the variety club freedom playground being built this spring.

i’m going to boston! a bunch of us will be there to celebrate on new year’s eve, and then we’re going to the winter classic hockey game at fenway park on new year’s day!

i am going to see my favorite band, the disco biscuits, at the nokia theatre in times square! i have been seeing them on new years for 9 years, it’s become a tradition that i share with many friends around the country.  my boyfriend is the lighting designer and he’s amazing,  so it makes it even more special for me- i can’t wait!

in germany, where i grew up, the tradition is to eat a marzipan pig with a four leaf clover for new years, for good luck –  so that is “something” i will be doing!

i am not a huge wine drinker but i would try these in a second! they are called “wines that rock,” a new line of wines by the mendocino wine company, that are based on iconic music. winemaker mark beaman took the words right out of my mouth: “i can’t believe that this is my job. i get to taste wine, listen to music, and think about how to put it all together in a bottle of wine that truly captures the essence of an album.”

i love the descriptions for each bottle of wine:
“to capture the intense, brooding character of the dark side of the moon he turned to a classic wine variety, cabernet sauvignon. a varietal with a deep, complex character that takes a relaxed environment to fully appreciate, cabernet sauvignon reflects the hauntingly dense, timeless character of pink floyd’s masterpiece album.”

“the music of woodstock celebrates community, individual expression, and breaking with the past. inspired by this message, winemaker mark beaman created a ‘naked’ style chardonnay. unlike other regions which grow more muted flavored chardonnays (which are then dressed up with oak and malolactic fermentation), woodstock chardonnay is an expression of pure fruit character and the land it was grown on…and as mark likes to say, “sunshine in a bottle.”

we have a new feature on our website!  now when you review an item you have the option of uploading a photo with your review!  this is a great way to see how other fp girls are wearing a product you’re thinking of purchasing, or just to share images of items you bought- click here and follow the link for the customer reviews for an example.  i personally find the reviews to be extremely helpful when i’m shopping online, so i think this is a great addition!

erica pena and melissa joy manning are the final two jewelry designers to be featured on the blog, and it makes sense to put them together as they are both female artists who create very feminine, romantic pieces that any girl would be lucky to own, and both designers also make an effort to be socially and environmentally friendly.

the inspiration behind erica pena’s first collection came from her move from manhattan to puerto rico, as she conveys this experience through jewelry that is a mix of new york’s rough edginess and the caribbean’s light airiness. her travels to places like bali continue to influence her designs and stimulate her to create unique and spiritual pieces that are chic, girly and bohemian. her travels have also influenced her to incorporate social and environmental causes into her work, and she joined with yayasan membina api cinta kasih (YAMACK), a non-profit organization in bali. one of the projects she has worked on in conjunction with this organization is building a unit/school for disabled children financed by the sales of a necklace and bracelet designed specifically for the cause.

we are very excited to be working with melissa joy manning, a US jewelry designer who creates one-of-a-kind pieces that are feminine and girly but with an edge, often mixing modern and traditional elements. she says that her jewelry “is not an accessory, but an expression… [it’s] about finding a piece that speaks to the individual and echoes their personality. i believe that jewelry can influence the way you feel; it can say and mean something different to every wearer.” the one-of-a-kind aspect of her items enhances this idea, as each piece and takes on a meaning entirely exclusive to its owner. she also uses stones believed to hold healing energy, and places tiny holes in the design of her work to allow the stone’s energy to flow through the metal and into the wearer. each piece of her jewelry is handmade in her studio in oakland, ca by an in-house production staff and using materials from only domestic suppliers. this is something melissa joy manning feels strongly about, as she pays close attention to running an environmentally responsible business.
