today is our friend stephanie's last day...she's in the middle. coincidentally (or not), she and 2 other co-workers wore our deep v boyfriend tee.
heather made some amazing good-bye cupcakes for us all, donned with the state of ohio (which is from where she hails) and dachsunds (her family loves 'em).
quite a turnout for last week's poll - we had 719 entries! your favorite ruffle-y item was our military jacket. (it was mine, too)
this week, we're looking to you to help us in what's become a pretty big discussion around the home office. free people often blends tough and sweet, but what look do you folks prefer this season?
please vote! and...feel free to tell us in your comments which you like...and why...

say hello to mark khaisman, a philadephia-based artist who hails from kiev, ukraine. his medium of choice is tape.
how he gets his inspiration: "i go mostly by motivation. i conceive an idea and live with it, and if in a while it still feels right to me, i work on it."
if you live in eastern pennsylvania, think about going to this year's energyfest!
based in kempton, pa, the three-day festival teaches about renewable energy, natural building construction, sustainable agriculture, land-use planning, forestry and healthy living practices in general. pretty awesome.
our president meg shared some of her famous zucchini bread with the folks here at the home office and left copies of the recipe for all of us, too.
this one was made with zucchinis from her husband's garden. look at those things...
delicious.

my brother and his partner, who live one of my many dream lives, spend 3 months out of the year here in philadelphia with family and the rest of the year in their home in hawaii. they, among other things, are local beekeepers. before they left this year, they harvested the hives and left me with a jar of local, organic honey. you can see the difference between the smaller jar of honey that was harvested here, and the darker honey from hawaii. apparently, when done organically, the color depends on the flowers the bees choose to collect pollen. check out their website to learn more about organic, biodynamic honey. i’d like to learn how to keep bees eventually when I have some space, but for now i’ll enjoy these gifts from them. wanted to give them some love for the cool things they are doing. xo.
a few interesting notes about honey and beekeeping…
1. it is said that eating local honey can help prevent and tame outside allergies.
2. there are said to be 212,000 beekeepers in the US, and about 95% of them are hobbyists.
3. the white house vegetable garden is home to a hive.
we've had 7 interns with us at the home office this summer...most of them are heading back to school now.
allie worked on our planning team. see below...she learned so much while she was here!
things i have learned this summer:
• contrary to my suspicions, ap physics actually DOES come in handy in the real world. understanding “velocity” is crucial to becoming an accomplished planner or allocator.
• WTF does not stand for “what the ****!”…it stands for We The Free
• i have learned to proficiently read without vowels. for example, “hey jamie. how are you allocating that L/S SLD VNK XTRM BTTNDWN MNSWR B/D PCKT TNK? i really like it”
• planners like numbers so much that they have made a numerical equivalent for almost every word used in the retail world.
• IT is your best friend
• ProClarity is your worst
• make mistakes, it's how you learn. however, make the same mistake twice, shame on you.
• be open to new opportunities. don’t turn your nose up at something until you are fully educated about it.
• incorporate design into all aspects of your life. be creative, be influential, and let yourself be open to influence.
• have energy and stay inspired.
• never settle for anything less than your dream job because…
• success and happiness are interchangeable.

polaroids from courtney, one of our we the free designers...
she and her hubby visited the south - florida and south of the border, north carolina.
i love how graphic they are...
two artists, Lenka Clayton & Michael Crowe, had this idea to send a handwritten letter to every household in a small irish town, after sending over 450 letters, they hoped it would bring the community together, promoting curiosity and discussion. and i think the end result is quite beautiful! its interesting to see how such a small idea and object become such a large creation Mysterious Letters
you know julie, the call center supervisor who was just profiled here yesterday...
well, she was kind enough to write up a little something about one of her favorite musicians, bon iver...
read on, and enjoy.
"Like a quick shot of brandy warming your belly on a cold winter day, Bon Iver sparks a fire in the pit of your stomach and works his way out. His music is layered and reflective, his story-telling frank and selfless. I first found out about him when reading about “Blood Bank”, his latest EP. It was recorded in a remote cabin in Wisconsin, Iver’s home state. The EP is a follow-up to his full length, “For Emma, Forever Ago” which was released in 2008 to much acclaim. Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) is building momentum in the US indie charts thanks to a rigorous tour schedule and rave reviews from respected critics.
His music evokes the crisp winter air along with the silence you encounter when you step outside after a brutal snowstorm. He is a single snow flake falling from a white sky, a single voice touching your soul. I encourage everyone to take a listen to Blood Bank and let it captivate you as it did me."

i got an email this weekend from one of our creative directors, merrie. she spends a lot of time in india, and shared this story with me about a little boy she befriended:
"this little boy's name is anshu.
his family lives on the grounds of our friend kundan's office and his father is the gardener.
kundan has developed a soft spot for him as he's grown up because he is so 'street smart'. he loves hanging with the big guys and doing what they do.
so, kundan decided to send him to a school that teaches english, which is the ticket to a better life in india. the school started only a few weeks ago, and we don't know if the family will see the value of a good education over the years to come, but we are trying...hopefully it's the start of something bigger.
i figured out no one had ever taught him his colors, so now everyday after 'tutions' he stops by our office and sorts my colors with me. (i work on my hindi, and he works on both hindi and english)."
katie from our accessories buying team found this little blurb in instyle uk...
maybe you'll want to take pix of your blingbags and send them to us?
hint hint...
we all love erin wasson...as you can see below.
but we're really excited to be working with the man who shot these photos - david mushegain - for our december 09 catalog.

she's the best. watch our interview with her from may 2008.
this is chris butler, brother-in-law to our awesome graphic designer lizzy.
he describes himself/his art as "analytical, cheap, collage, fast, geometric, simple."
cool stuff.
this week's beach home page video was shot with a digital harizenumi...a rad little camera that makes your still images/video look like they were shot in 1967.
you can buy this camera from urban outfitters! (card reader and battery must be purchased at another venue, keep in mind!)
there's an awesome restaurant in center city, philly - the noble american cookery.

our knits designer chau went there shortly after they opened...read about her experience at her cool blog, drawingforfood.blogspot.com.

I have totally fallen in love with Aimee Sicuro's illustrations ever since I saw them on Black*Eiffel! I love the whimsy and the way she draws people. Though, the doggy on a bicycle might be my favorite! Check out more here.

These paper flower creations have been floating around the web lately and inspiring me to pull out my tissue paper and try my own hand at some nature-inspired creations!
I've posted about Julien Vallée's colorful paper work before, so I couldn't resist sharing his new video with you! It's almost like an ad for a fantastical game that can't exist yet - but I wish it did!
Okay, so the eyes on these paintings are pretty creepy, but there is something I really like about them! Julia Kuo references street fashion blog posts to create these - she just picks out ones that catch her eye and goes with it! See the rest on her site.
I love this beautiful nature font by NeuArmy. I wish they had posted all the letters, but they only have enough to write the word organic. Still, so pretty! See all they have here.

These illustrations by Tiffany Bozic are so light and airy! I really like them; I feel like I am transported to a different world! Check out her site for more of an escape.
It's super gray in Philly today, but I came across this video on Now Voyager and it's making me glad! All those birdies are so cute and funny flying and tittering! The song is from the Amelie soundtrack - so wonderful!
You may remember when we profiled the lovely Rubyellen of the blog Cakies - well she is the creator of this awesome giant dollhouse pillow! She made it for her daughter's second birthday. The front has huge pockets for dolls to hang out in, and as you can see, the back has many fun details! I love the little chandelier and all the little curtains! Plus, it's huge! When I first saw the top pictures I figured it was a normal pillow size, but when I saw her daughter tucked into it I knew it was awesomely big! I think this is such a cool idea - I want my own dollhouse pillow now!
Be sure to check out Rubyellen's blog- she is very crafty and comes up with cute projects like this all the time!

Believe it or not, I don't think I've ever seen any pinhole art before! (Or if I have, I had no idea!) Now that I've seen the delicate pinhole art of Heather Smith Jones, I want to try it myself! Of course mine won't have the skill and prettiness of Heather's, but I'm definitely inspired! See more of Heather's work here, and learn a little bit more about pinhole art here!
One of our Facebook friends, Mia, spent the summer on a beautiful farm in Iowa. She and her father took lots of really pretty photos of her on the farm, modeling Free People clothes! She was kind enough to share the pictures with us, check them out!
This man and his bubbles are making me happy! He is Samsam Bubbleman, and he first fell in love with bubbles in 1989. He has created his own special and especially good bubble-making mixture, (a secret!) which has helped him to set two different records - one record for fitting 50 people into one of his bubbles a couple of years ago, and one record for fitting 66 bubbles within a bubble! Currently he is waiting for his newest record to be confirmed, the biggest bubble ever, which was 20ft by 5ft by 5ft at its biggest. Bubbles are so odd and wonderful - and how nice to be able to make a living making them if you love them!
I'm feeling very inspired by the look of these awesome wooden houses in Siberia. The patterns and cut-outs are so detailed, and the houses feel really earthy. Click here to be whisked off to Vlad Studio, where you can see tons more great photos of the houses, and even download them in wallpaper size!
These little collages by Analu Prestes are so cute! I love that she painted the flowers, and such vibrant colors! Check out Analu's Flickr for many more lovely pieces!
Happy Thursday! Last week we looked at a few of our blazers, and the Knit Mandarin Collar Blazer was the favorite by nearly 50 votes, with 172 votes total!
Since our new catalog just dropped, we have a bunch of new rompers that I have been checking out. Look at them with me!

These visual installations by Ingo Maurer use fisherman's nets embellished with crystal drops to create the feeling of being underwater. They look so pretty! Wouldn't it be wonderful to have one hanging over your bed? I would love that!
These illustrations by Kelsey Brookes are so cool. He was recently featured by DazedDigital and created these pieces for that feature! His other work is really cool too though, see it here.

How awesome are these paintings by Amy Ruppel?! I love them! She has created one for each of the 50 United States, featuring the state animal of each one. Painted on wood, she uses wax, paper, and oils. Check out all of the paintings for each of the states right here!
Jill Lin has created these fun illustrations in collaboration with Bando! There is something about them I really like - they are so pretty! I like to imagine what sort of faces would go underneath the hair! Jill has many other beautiful illustrations which you can see on her site.
Our August catalog drops today and we are so excited! Shot at a quaint Pennsylvania farm, this is a very special book that has some very special models: the dogs and cats of The Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society! Many of our own pets were adopted from animal shelters, so this is a topic that really hits home for us! Our hope is that this book might help raise awareness of all the doggies and kitties that are hoping for good homes in shelters across the country! Click here to find an animal shelter in your area! Also, don't miss Kevin's interviews with the animal models at the shoot! They are so cute!
Aside from our lovely animal models, another very special thing about this catalog was our photographer! For this book we were very lucky to get the photographer Dahlen. Dahlen is an amazing fashion photographer, and he has even shot Madonna! Check out this fun video of the master at work, at the shoot!

Kieran, a 6 year old from Norfolk UK, not only painted the amazing watercolor above, but many many more! His paintings are just beautiful, and the fact that he's 6 years old is incredible! Check out this little video clip about him below! It's really cute and cool!
These amazing and colorful sculptures by Ara Peterson are made of wood! I only wish I could see them in real life, because they are optical illusions as well, and appear to be moving before one's eyes! Regardless, I love all the colors and textures!
Did you guys have any idea that you can make your own sidewalk chalk? I sure didn't! Mad Maggie Designs has some instructions right here. It seems pretty easy to do!

Japanese designhouse Felissimo is starting up a new project soon, and it's pretty cool! For 33$ a month they will send you a different assortment of 25 like-colored pencils each month, for 20 months. The different colors have names like Arizona sunset and drizzly afternoon, and come in really awesome packaging - works of art in themselves! I can't afford to subscribe, but maybe someday! Until then I'm enjoying the pictures! If you want to subscribe, or you just want to look at all the fabulous colors, check out the website!
I am in love with these beautiful old floral paintings. Dear Ada found them, but she has no idea who painted them! None of the commenters on her blog knew, but maybe you do! At any rate, if you like these as much as I do, check out Dear Ada's post - she has the images in a much bigger size if you click through, and then you can use one as desktop wallpaper! You know I did!
