3 Ways To Style Short Hair

Our new blog intern, Madisyn, was the inspiration behind this post. When I first met Madisyn about a year ago, she had hair that was down to her waist. One day, she went in to the salon for just a bang trim, and ended up leaving with a pixie cut. Something struck her when she was sitting in the chair, and she decided it was time for a change. I haven’t had my hair short since I was in elementary school, and I don’t know when that next time will be that I decide to drastically cut it. I think it takes a lot of courage to go in there and say “chop it off – lets do this.” Short hair isn’t for everyone, but I always look up to those who can pull it off. Using some of Madisyn’s tips, here are 3 ways to style short hair this season!

1) The Morning Routine

We all have a morning hair routine, but sometimes it’s good to change it up or throw a new product into the mix. When it comes to short hair, it’s all about adding in texture and volume. Below, Madisyn shares the steps to achieving her shaggy pixie look!

2) Add In Some Braids

Adding in some small braids is simple and one of the fastest ways to add style into hair. For this look, I took the longest bits of Madisyn’s hair and made three braids – one small, one medium, and one thick. I overlapped them, then secured all three with a few pins. Bobby pins are a great to style short hair with as well. If you don’t have enough length to braid, you can get creative with placing bobby pins. (Check out this post for more inspiration!)

3) Wear a headband…or two!

Headbands are a great accessory for short hair that you can actually style in a few different ways. We have some awesome tie-dyed wide bands online right now that are super comfortable. For the look below, Madisyn took two of the headbands and layered them on. – the addition of a second band adds in a boho vibe and a bit more color.

If you use one, try tucking in a few pieces underneath the side of the band.  This worked well for Madisyn’s long front bangs and gave her hair a cool wrapped look.

My older sister has a pixie cut she’s trying to grow out (and it turns into a mullet like every other week, poor soul). One of her favorite ways to style it is in little tiny ugly pony tails on the top. Sorta Miley-esque but also really 90s-Space-Alien. Thats a thing, right? :)

It takes a lot of courage and confidence to pull of hair this short – I love it!! I think everyone should go short with their hair at least once, just so hair does not become a ‘safety net’. For me, short hair will always be easy and oh so chic :)

I am SO GLAD you posted a piece on short hair! As far as I could see, all your models, styles, and tips have been with, or for, long hair. After I hacked mine all off recently I was feeling lost with what to do, but this really helps. More short hair beauty tips, please!!

Totally agree with Gemma. Love this blog a lot, but not enough representation of people with short hair!

Finally growing out pixie cut- kept for several years, after having long, thick, curly hair I’d kill to have back. Using technique of trimming bi-weekly, to keep away mullet, keeping nape of neck trimmed and stacking the back, as well. Using pretty bobby pins helps keep the top in some order, while letting the top’s length catch up with the back.

Finally a post about short hair! It would also be great to get style tips from and for ladies with poker straight hair (sea salt spray doesn’t create waves it just makes it stringy!) Braids, bobby pins and headbands are short hair’s best friends!

My long curly locks are just too thick to pull of this short-do – but Madyson rocks it! Super cute!

I would love to see these kinds of ideas for short straight hair. My hair is super straight, so I have a hard time finding inspiration for when my hair is short.
Thanks!

Love it! So many that want short hair for the convenience then feel like they are stuck in a rut and cannot make their look different! This proves that theory wrong!

Really great post. All these hairstyles are pretty awesome. I have undergone hair transplant treatment one year ago and now I have regained good length of my hair. I will surely try these styles on my hair.
