Get inspired by our FP Me stylist of the week!
Utah keeps blessing us with FP Me Babes. It’s no surprise; what with the state’s stunning terrain, it might easily be one of THE best places for photo opps. This week, Shae is here to tell us a little bit more about her world. Whether it’s skiing or rock climbing, this girl is always immersed in the great outdoors, seeking out inspiration in adventurous ways. Get to know more about ShaePowder below!

Do you have a favorite childhood memory from your hometown?
Yes! My first heli-ski trip when I was nine years old. A storm had dumped two feet of fresh new powder overnight in the mountains. When there’s a big snow storm, we take the day off from school/work to go skiing (with the bosses’ permission of course). My dad has been a ski patroller/heli-ski guide at Powder Mountain for 25 + years, and on this particular day he was flying on the helicopter. Luckily, there were open seats and we got to go as a family. I’ve grown up around helicopters and, after all the flights I’ve been on in my lifetime, I still remember just how amazing that flight was. Everything as far as the eye could see was completely covered in snow. The pilot dropped us off at the top of an untracked mountain and, as I got out of the helicopter, I sunk down to my belly button. I skied the entire mountain like that. By far my favorite ski day I’ve ever had.

Can you tell us about the city you currently live in?
I’ve lived my entire life in Salt Lake, in the same house. Most people I meet in my hometown treat a stranger like a friend. I enjoy living downtown, in an upbeat city but also such a short drive to the mountains. There’s tons of diversity — in a matter of minutes you can either be in the desert or the mountains. You have the best of all worlds here.

What are your favorite areas to explore/spend time?
If I’m not working or in school, I’m up in the mountains. There is so much beauty here in Utah — not taking full advantage of it is a waste. I’ve always been a very outdoorsy girl. During the summer I love to rock climb, kayak, hike, mountain bike, camp, waterski, whatever I can soak in. During the winter my friends and family are up at the ski resort any chance we get.

What inspired you to become a FP Store Stylist?
I was in the Free People store the day it came to Salt Lake City, and continued to make frequent stops. Not only because I loved the clothing, but the atmosphere when you walk in is so positive. Every girl in there loves what she does and it shows in the work. Plus, (my now manager) Shauna begged me to apply every time I came into the shop.

How would you describe your personal style?
I have a touch of everything in my wardrobe. A little bohemian, a little tomboy, a little edgy. It kinda depends on my mood for the day. Im an old soul, and I think that’s why a lot of my style is inspired from the 70’s and 80’s. I like to test boundaries in my style. Anything that would be deemed hard to pull off, I try my best to get away with.

What’s your favorite form of creative expression?
I grew up in a very creative family. We’ve owned craft stores for generations, so naturally I love to paint, draw, sew and make jewelry. Much of my creative expression comes from writing and taking photos. Luckily, I get to incorporate the two when I blog. For me, that is my solace. That is where I put forth all my effort and time because I’m so passionate about it.

If you had to recommend three places for someone to visit in their lifetime, what would they be?
Number one would have to be “The Baths” on an island in the British Virgin Islands. Not only is the island breathtaking, but the people are so welcoming, and the shopping is very eclectic. If you ever find yourself there, make sure you hike Devil’s Bay Trail.
Second, I’d say Costa Rica. I love to scuba dive and I’ve had several fantastic diving experiences there. The area is known for their sea turtle hatchings and rain forests. P.S. Bring some earplugs unless you want to be woken up at dawn by howler monkeys. There’s a reason they were given that name.
I can’t leave out my favorite city, Seattle. I always thought that Salt Lake was lush and green until I flew into that city for the first time, and I was completely blown away. Definitely hit up the Space Needle and Pikes Place. As touristy as they may be, you’ll learn so much about Seattle from them. I never go to Washington without taking one of the ferrys to the islands. My favorite area is Friday Harbor. The town is so cute, and they have the best fish in the world. If you have a chance to stay overnight on the islands, camp out on the beaches. You’ll wake up to the prettiest sunrise.
What are some of your favorite Instagram accounts to follow?
I love Tezzamb, Kelly Packer and Alexis Jade Kaiser. All the smokin’ Utah babes :)
Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Something my dad always says to me: “this too shall pass”. Simple, but it always sticks out in my head. Anytime I’m dealing with something difficult I just remember it’s only temporary. Everyone always says life is too short to be sad, and it’s true. It’s too short to not take chances and live your life to the fullest. It’s a waste of time to dwell on the things you can’t change. You never know when your time on this earth is going to end, so be kind to everyone you meet, and never leave a bad impression. Make it so if anyone were ever to say something bad about you, nobody would believe them.
What does being ‘free’ mean to you?
Being “free” means never having to apologize for being yourself. It’s having your own unique style, likes, dislikes, opinions and ways of expressing yourself. It means loving every aspect of yourself because nobody in the world is exactly like you. Freedom is never letting anyone else tell you who you should be.
