Is there anything more beautiful than that which occurs in nature? I truly think not. I’m always on the lookout for new ways to incorporate nature into my life, whether decorating my home, adorning my body, and everything in between. I recently came across a way to make prints from fresh flower petals (similar to these hammered leaf prints), and I love the idea of incorporating them into a homemade holiday card this season, as well as creating a card by attaching fresh flowers themselves!
For the hammered petal card idea, you can experiment with all different types of flowers. Of the ones shown below, I found that the fuschia color produced the best results.
To make the prints, first lay the petals face-down on your material of choice — I used fabric, but paper and card stock work well, too.
Cover with another piece of fabric, then place on top of a hard surface — I found it worked well if my fabric was on top of a thick piece of cardboard, which was on top of a brick surface. Hammer on top of the area where your petals are. Do this multiple times to make sure you hit all spots. When you’re done, lift up the fabric and peel off each petal. You should be left with something like this:
Sometimes you’ll find that your petals have moved in the process, but that just makes it all the more unique. :) I love the beautiful mess that comes from doing this project.
I hot glued my fabric to a rectangular piece of thick cardboard. I love how simple it looks.
On the inside, I hot glued a piece from a brown paper bag on top of the fabric, and used that to write on top of. I also glued some petals and leaves inside — just know that these will dry out and become very delicate within a day or two.
Another idea is to make a beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers on a piece of card stock using just a needle and thread.
Slide a needle through the stem of a flower (much more secure than using the petals themselves), and weave it in and out of your card stock, then tie the thread in a knot to secure.
I added a piece of a crochet doily in the corner for some extra interest.
The flowers will dry in a day or two, making them very delicate, but they’ll still look incredibly beautiful!
