I woke with the sun’s rise… early in the fog’s crawling… with thoughts of the ocean’s steady current. It was 5am, maybe, at best. I was wide awake, thinking about stillness and movement… of rigidity and softness. Of yin and yang… per say. I sat on the dock, watching the waves break with the sun’s hello. Without tire, each wave brings new matter from the depths, and takes with it what it pleases. The ocean never stays still — always moving, always changing. Though strong and unpredictable, the ocean is a character of duality… for there comes with it, also, an unassuming and humble nature that brings a softness to the soul — a kindness to our thoughts once harsh with daily do’s. It takes with it those too, our negative thoughts — and brings back new perspective. That’s why I walk the local beaches of my home — to give the ocean what I know it can take, and take from it what I know it’s happy to give. To every duo, one is the ocean’s mover and shaker, the other, the calming only the sea can bring.
Jessica Mau and her sister Malia paint a picture here… of embracing the softer side. Comfortable, easy, loose garments that give way to walking the mornings of your thoughts with someone you love. A clean slate for every day’s beginning.

I can feel the air and smell the ocean through these photos. Beatiful words and stunning photos, thank you Amy!
I am really tired of FREE PEOPLE advertising young girls wearing their clothes when in reality, I’m 51, my aunt is 66 and we both wear your clothing line. Too bad you don’t show REAL people wearing your line. How sad, not to include REAL WOMEN!
Stacey, nice to know that as a 22 year old woman I’m not “REAL” according to your criteria. Shall I just float away into the ether, then? If you’re offended that you’re not represented by FP marketing don’t retaliate by being just as exclusionary. I think the shoot was stunning, and these girls are just as much real women as you and your aunt are.
Stacey, it’s great that you can still enjoy clothes that are, in fact, targeted at women in their mid 20s. The great thing about fashion is that ANYONE can wear anything so long as it looks good. But to be negative and angry about a company’s target audience is a little excessive. You can’t fight exclusion with even more exclusion and at the end of the day, it’s really not a big deal.
Thanks, Stacey. I thought I was real for 21 years, it’s nice to finally find out I’m not! Do I sense some serious youth envy? Yes I do! It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can wear what you look & feel good in. But nobody hires seniors as models, so get over it, enjoy the beautiful photos, & stop being mean.
Love the breezy comfy cozy feeling these pictures bring :)

Oh boy. If I saw a 60 year old lady wearing a crop top and high-waisted short shorts I’d be quite uncomfortable. Not to mention, I’d be less apt to purchase the outfit. THAT’S reality. These models will one day be old ladies and they look forward to finally being REAL, I’m sure.
The images in this post remind me why I love to photograph California and my constant need to explore. Lovely photos, they serve as inspiration for my own site :)

As an island girl I absolutely love the ocean. In Puerto Rico, where I’m from, we have tons of beaches, tropical paradises, that are for locals only. Sometimes I feel bad for tourists because all they get is crowded beaches with a bunch of buildings in the back ground. The outfits are breathtaking, I love every single one of them, even the Birkenstock! Go figure. I’m so ready for summer! The girls are just beautiful, if they were the same height they could be twins.
Stacey, you are way out of line. I am tired of women throwing out the phrase “REAL WOMEN” when they feel excluded. What is a real woman to you exactly? Any woman, from the day they’re born to the day they die, are real women regardless of age, background or body shape. I applaud that you want to stay young at heart and enjoy FP clothing but saying a 21 yrs old is not a real women is exclusionary, discriminatory and just plain mean and untrue. I’m 37 so I guess I don’t get to be real until I’m, what? 51? 66? And Lexi – LOL!
Who cares about any of this nonsense. I AM 60-sorry Lexi-and i DO wear FP–and I look damn good! Even my 22 year old son comments on how good I look-and it’s always when I’m wearing FP. So. Quit worrying about what EVERYONE ELSE DOES-SAYS-WEARS-ADVERTISES—–Do what you want and be FREE.
I’m 51, I wear FP clothing-with a bit of discrimination, of course, no crop tops for me!-and I have never once felt that any of the FP models and fashion bloggers were less than ‘real’. Nor have I ever felt any sense of negativity on this blog like I have today. Stacey, you are definitely out of line, not only with your comment, but also with your attitude, which is the opposite of what FP stands for and conveys with their site and this blog. And, Beka, there actually is a huge market for ‘senior’ models, but you probably won’t see them until you start reading the mags and going to the websites meant for us ‘old coots’. Until you do, enjoy being young and ‘real’.
I am 20 years old and Stacey is 31 years more REAL than me, Mary too, and Cindy is 40 years more REAL than me. Of course, this is only an opinion, but opinion or not, I do NOT believe by any means that you young women, like me, should be rude or disrespectful to these beautiful women who have given us what we have today. These women are wise, and us young women have a LOT to learn from them. I am absolutely honored to be wearing the same clothing line as these women. I would absolutely LOVE to see free people do photo shoots, blog posts, and more lines of clothing all focused around these elder women who enjoy Free People just as much as us younger women. I do not believe Stacey meant to say that us younger women PLEASE take Stacey, Cindy, and Mary into your thoughts, and please listen to what they wish. I think it is time for the young people of this planet to start giving back to the elders of our planet for they have created thus far much more than us. FP would be even more beautiful with these wise, elder women to inspire us!
Sending love and light to ALL of you beautiful and free women, younger or elder.
Kelsey :)
Wearing clothing is a way of expressing herself in an artistic way with fabric. It has nothing to do with age or what is acceptable for ones age. Art has no lines are rules it just is. Clothing is art and so are people, lets not box them in a world were most are all too eager too.

Well said Kelsey, Im 33, and I hear you and feel the same! I feel lucky to be a part of a community of such strong, beautiful women of all ages ☺️
Billy Joe says
My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart’s the only thing that’s beating
Sometimes I wish someone up there will find me
’til then I walk alone
I’m walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone
Read between the lines
What’s fucked up and everything’s alright
Check my vital signs
To know I’m still alive and I walk alone
Kelsey what wonderful insight you have. I would be proud of you if I were your Mother and actually my daughter is a free people designer and model. She is a rocker and musician who recognizes that there are many women who have paved the way for all women in many walks of life. The minute you disrespect any other woman no matter what age you have done a great disservice to us all and the strides we have made. I am so proud of the young woman my daughter is and I wear her Free People deigns with a joyful heart.
These images are the most inspirational thing ever! Makes me want to follow my dream of living by the beach even more.
I am honored as a 40 year old myself to understand clearly what the young and older ladies are saying but its all about Respect and I love the style of these clothes so care free and yes some of these clothes is made for younger people. But what ever age you are with great confident and free to express who you are is what matters. So much respect to this company and to women of all ages and Be Free.I am peace, light and Respect
Wow.
What another lovely blog and photo session from FP! And what a stir! :)
Not that it hasn’t already been addressed very eloquently by the other women on this blog, however I happen to know both of these beautiful models personally and Stacy, you may be pleasantly surprised to know that Malia, Jessica’s sister, just turned 30 and that they are both very real and talented women. Malia has an incredible jewelry line ( http://www.mgracejewelry.com ) and Jessica is a tea sommelier and has a tea company. Both of these ladies are very well read, well spoken and multi faceted human beings.
Although, I don’t agree with how you chose to express your feelings on this matter, I am grateful that you did, because it’s opened a wonderful dialogue and I am reminded, once again why I visit this blog.
