New Year, New Music We Love!

Looking back on 2014, there was a ton of new music that I discovered and was introduced to by others.

Now, at the dawn of a new year, this also means a new era of music. It’s exciting to think that there are songs and bands out there that may not mean anything to us now, but could pop into our musical libraries at any given moment. Like right now…

Today, our Free People Music Committee — they’re the ones responsible for selecting the music you hear playing when you visit one of our stores — is sharing the sounds of 2015 they are most excited for. Get to know some of the girls below, listen to their playlist, and find out what they’ll be looking forward to in 2015!

Olivia Flocco

olivias

Olivia’s picks:

 1. Snarky Puppy (feat. Lalah Hathaway) Something

2.Wild Belle Twisted

Snarky Puppy is the epitome of new jazz fusion music and it’s quite an experience. If you’re into really funky instrumental music, definitely check these guys out! The song “Something” features the extraordinary Lalah Hathaway. The song won a Grammy this past year and was a real milestone for the band. I have Free People to thank for my newest obsession: Wild Belle! Natalie Bergman‘s quirky view on love & tongue-in-cheek reality checks within her lyrics are a rare thing to come by, and I can’t wait to see what else the band’s got in store!

Kirby Cox

Kirby’s Pick:

1. James Bay Let It Go

I’ve been following James for a few years and I am so excited about how his career is taking off! Lot’s of good things to come from him!

Sara Sopher

Sarah’s Picks:

1. Parlour Tricks Requiem

2. Native America Like a Dream

I saw Parlour Tricks live in New York City and was so blown away. I can’t wait to see what they do in 2015!

Sarah Farley

Sarah’s Picks

 1. Belle and Sebastian The Party Line

2. Alvvays Archie Marry Me

Belle and Sebastian are one of my all time favorite bands. I love their new song and can’t wait to hear the full album when it’s released this month! I’ll be going to see them in Toronto in April. They are so great live, it’s going to be a blast! I instantly fell in love with Alvvays when I heard Archie Marry Me. Their entire album is perfect and I can’t wait to hear more from them in the future. I’m excited to see them live for the first time in April when they come to Buffalo with The Decemberists.

Ali Hoernig

Ali’s Picks:

1. Purity Ring Push Pull

Purity Ring is releasing a new album this year, and while I was ringing in the New Year I was jamming to them!

Kristen Daly

kristens

Kristen’s Picks:

1. We Are Twin Baby Please

2. Larkin Poe Stubborn Love

Larkin Poe is the kind of girl-driven band that has an indie-folkish sound that’s fresh and interesting to listen to. While We Are Twin has a nice amount of both members’ taking the lead in certain songs, sharing the spotlight… their tunes make you want to get up and dance! There haven’t been a lot of bands with girls taking the lead lately, it seems like like solo artists are making their mark. 2015 is going to be the year of girls taking over the music scene.

Allison Flaker

allison flakers

Allison’s Picks:

1. Father John Misty Chateau Lobby #4 (In C for Two Virgins)

2. Modest Mouse Lampshades on Fire

I’m SO excited and anxious for the new Father John Misty record. His first record as Father John Misty, Fear Fun, has become one of my all time favorites and I’ve been waiting, very impatiently, for him to follow it up with something as witty and intelligent and beautiful. From what I’ve heard so far from I Love You, Honeybear, this record might be just that. A new record from Mondest Mouse has been long overdue and I know I’m not the only one very ready for it! Almost ten years is too long but I’d wait another ten if I had to.

Kat Miranda

kats

Kat’s Picks:

1. Kite Jonny Boy

2. Soldout 94

There are so many great albums coming out this year! I’m really excited for Belle & Sebastian’s newest album, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, coming out in a few weeks. I’m also ready to break out my air keytar this year to Kite’s EP VI. I’m not a very good dancer, but I fully intend on awkwardly dancing my way through 2015 and these are the songs I’ll be playing.

Sarabeth Oppliger

sarabeths

Sarahbeth’s Picks:

1. The Decemberists The Wrong Year

2. Velveteins XOXY

I stumbled upon the Velveteins on Instagram a few months ago and have been head over heels since my ears heard their breezy indie tunes. The dreamy Canadians just recorded an EP with the former drummer of Cage the Elephant that’ll be out this spring and I can’t wait to hear what they put together! Having spent four years living in Oregon, I have so much love for bands bred in the Pacific Northwest! Their style is always incomparable to any other band’s and the Decemberists are no exception! After taking a brief hiatus, the band is BACK with an album that’s already shaping up to be just as catchy, magical, and inspiring as what they’ve released in the past!

Maggie Z

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Maggie’s Pick:

1. Chløë Black 27 Club

The first time I heard the song 27 Club by Chløë Black I was hooked! This catchy tune explores her hauntingly passionate vocals which can be somewhat compared to the voice of Lana Del Rey. With festival season right around the corner I couldn’t be more hopeful to see her live, with maybe an album drop in the near future! She is definitely one of my favorite up and coming artists that I am excited to hear more from in 2015!

Darcy McElroy

darcys

Darcy’s Picks:

1. Brika Expectations
2. Little Dragon A Place To Belong
3. Sylvan Esso Play It Right

To me, these three songs speak to the bittersweet journey that your mind goes on when you’re moving forward through the new year; the nostalgia for the past, the hope for the future, and the ease and enjoyment that comes with just going with the flow and being present in the moment.

Skye McGill

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

Skye’s Pick:

1. BORNS 10,000 Emerald Pools

My favorite band that I look forward to hearing more from in 2015 is, BORNS, I am obsessed with their album ‘Candy’. I listen to their song 10,000 Emerald Pools on repeat almost every day.

Rachel Jones

rachel jonesss

Rachel’s Pick:

1. New Year’s Eve

This song just feels like New Year’s to me, sweeping you up in nostalgia, romance and melancholy all at once. Also, is definitely an artist whose career I’m excited to see progress in 2015 after the release of her amazing record, ‘No Mythologies to Follow’.

Sarah Loftus

sarah loftusss

Sarah’s Picks:

1. Panda Bear Mr.Noah

2. Twin Shadow Five Seconds

I’m super excited to hear what Panda Bear has in store on his upcoming album ‘Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper’. It’s been a few years since he’s released a solo album and based upon hearing this first EP I’m sure it will be captivating and full of surprises. Twin Shadow is one of my favorite bands. Their music is great for driving around the city late at night with your girlfriends. I’m looking forward to hearing their new album, ‘Eclipse’ in March and I’m certain it will not disappoint!

Morgan Mclaren

morgan mcs

Morgan’s Picks:

1. Wolf Alice Moaning Lisa Smile

2. James Bay Hold Back The River

Neither one of these artists are brand new to the music scene, but they were both just nominated to the BBC Music Sound 2015 longlist which is really exciting. James Bay has an incrediblely smoothing, bluesy sound to his songs. While on the other hand, Wolf Alice is more grunge/rock, and Ellie (the vocalist) gives the music a fantastic, strong female presence. Both artists also have a heavy guitar presence and I love how they use the sound in such opposite methods. Wolf Alice has a show coming up at The Mercury Lounge at the end of January that I’m super pumped to go to!

Katy Lohn

katy2s

Katy’s Pick:

1. Future Islands Seasons (Waiting On You)

I think I’m more excited about artists and albums than individual songs this year. ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ by Future Islands has been playing pretty consistently in the last weeks of 2014. I’ve also been highly anticipating the release of PAPA‘s new album in 2015. PAPA just has a weird hold over me; I’ve seen them live more than once and they’re always a good time. I can’t imagine that their new album will disappoint! Also, Mac DeMarco, Perfume Genius and Spoon came out with amazing albums in 2014, so I have a feeling 2015 is going to be a big year for them.

Jess Lee

jesslees

Jess’s Picks:

1. Indiana Heart on Fire

2. George Maple Vacant Space

3. Ryn Weaver Stay Low

I am patiently awaiting the release of Indiana‘s debut album – ‘No Romeo’. I love Indiana‘s voice, and the versatility of her music – each song (that I’ve heard so far) can fit to any mood. All three of these women are amazingly talented and so unique. I cannot wait to hear more from them in 2015. I have a hunch we will see some of these gals at the music festivals this season.

Danielle Lupo

Danielle Luposs

Danielle’s Pick:

1.Tame Impala It feels like we only go backwards

Tame Impala makes me nostalgic for long summer drives with the windows down, the breeze in my hair, and miles and miles of empty road and possibilities ahead of me. Here’s looking forward to the wild unknown of 2015; can’t wait to discover what it’s got in store for me!
