This post comes from our blog intern, Aubrie!
There are so many different types of photographers out there and although many may experiment with different subject matter, a great photographer’s expertise ultimately lies in a specific style. When I first saw Australia-based photographer Claudia Smith’s photographs, it was immediately clear that she had mastered the art of the portrait.
A portrait seeks to capture the mood, expressions, and emotions of its subject. With simple styling, natural surroundings, and perfect lighting, Claudia had done just that. Her work allows the free-spirited essence of each and every one of her models shine through, yet they don’t come across as models posing for the camera at all. Instead, she showcases them as inspiring muses, as characters in a story, these girls are the wanderers who seek solitude to escape everyday life. In their environments they appear relaxed, comfortable and carefree, as if not a worry in the world crosses their minds. Their hearts are filled with curiosity, and when you look into their eyes you can’t help but want to know more about these mysterious women that have been captured through stunning fashion portraiture. Take a peek at the Aussie photographer’s fine photographs below and read more about what inspires her work!

Where do you currently live? How do you think this has shaped the person you are today?
I have just moved to Melbourne two days ago! But I have lived around Byron Bay for the past 18 years of my life. Byron has a very relaxed vibe, which I think has influenced my personality.

Did you always want to be a photographer? What made you realize this was to be your chosen path?
I have loved photography from a young age and have always used it as a form to express my creativity. Photography has progressed in my life due to my enjoyment for the medium and getting to work with rad people all the time.

Describe your ultimate dream photo shoot if you could have any model, location, and styling resources in the world:
I would LOVE to do an American road trip with Lara Stone styled in all vintage. If not that, then a shoot with a young Kate Moss at a ’70s-style house/swimming pool.

I find that there seems to be a greater depth to these photos. This great brilliance that is hidden behind each movement and shadow…and you can’t help but try to create a wonderful story to go with it. Beautiful.
