I’m prone to breakouts. I also exercise often. These two things do not seem to work together in my favor. If sweat sits on my skin after a workout for even a few minutes, I know there’s going to be a problem. When I realized that the new gym I’m about to join is a 30-minute commute every day, I knew I needed to come up with a solution. Of course showering at the gym is always an option, but I’ll never turn down an opportunity to create a face mist!
To me, this face mist seems to be the perfect storm of ingredients. Tea tree oil kills bacteria before it has a chance to cause a blemish, sea salt helps treat existing blemishes while its minerals nourish the skin, peppermint cools the skin after a heated workout, and lemongrass lifts the mood as lavender calms the mind.
To make, first brew a cup of peppermint tea. While it’s still hot, add in your sea salt and mix well to dissolve. Then, mix in your tea tree oil and essential oils, and allow to cool. Funnel your mixture into an atomizer bottle (glass is best), and you’re good to go!
A couple of tips!
– If your skin is sensitive, you might want to start out using a little less tea tree oil and sea salt, and maybe just 1 or 2 drops of the essential oils in total. These oils can be irritating to some, so it’s best to start with a diluted version.
– Not all sea salt is created equal. Oftentimes, sea salt that appears bright white in color has been processed, which means it’s not as pure and natural as it may seem. I love pink Himalayan sea salt – I get mine from Whole Foods.
– This spray can be used on your body as well. If you’re prone to breakouts on your back after exercise, this might help!
– Feel free to experiment with different types of herbal tea and various essential oils, too. Just make sure you don’t use any that are too harsh on your skin.
+What will you put in your mixture?

Ailyn – Because of the bacteria-killing tea tree oil I think it should be fine for a while.. Maybe about a month? Storing it in the refrigerator when not in use could help prolong its life as well! :)
Hmm, I never thought of tea as a facial cleanser!
I like this fashion blog
This looks like heaven in a jar!
I have made something similar, but the tea is a neat touch, and i use Epson salts which I find has great healing power, and maybe rose water for smell.
Absolutely amazing :) i made this today and it smells so good and feels great on the skin. I struggled to find a glass spray bottle, any idea where i could find one?
I have to try this!
ahhh yes this is exactly what i need, i just made a lavender hydrosol and have been looking for something to do with the leftover lavender water. I imagine a lavender tea might be better for those w/ sensitive skin as well :)
Need to try this! and I love the pictures they’re so so pretty

Do you actually use a lemon or just lemongrass?
This looks like an amazing face mist to make. I’m prone to breakouts too, so I believe this can be very useful. Thank you!
Love this post! Check out my latest blogpost on Face Mapping! xp

This looks awesome!! I live in Cambodia and am covered in a fine layer of sweat + dirty 24/7. I walk everywhere for exercise (and because the roads are death traps) but that means I am even dirtier than necessary whenever I get where I’m going in addition to the normal people sweat I get from actual exercise. Hopefully, using this as an after-walking-in-40-degree-heat-everyday spray will work just as well as when I use it after exercising! Probably will have to use normal, unfashionable table salt since Whole Foods hasn’t yet reached the third world.
I can’t express how wonderful the Free People DIYs are. Such great ideas and so beautifully written. I hope you don’t mind me sharing them on my blog! Thanks for the inspiration ^_^ xx
I am in love with all of the natural beauty tips from Free People… LOVE!
This facial mist is lovely and cools my skin down really nicely after exercise. The tea tree oil also has antibacterial properties which have kept my skin almost blemish-free since starting to use this. A less harsh alternative to tea tree oil is witch hazel. Mix one teaspoon – one tablespoon (it has a strong scent so add according to preference) in to replace the tea tree oil. Witch hazel tightens pores, is antibacterial, soothes irritation and reduces inflammation. Another ingredient I’d recommend playing with is green tea. Green tea helps balance your complexion, refreshes your skin and prevents oiliness. Hope this helps!
For how long can I keep this mist?
This might be a stupid question but does it have to be used right after a workout or after you already washed your face?
