When we intentionally utilize Tarot as a tool to reconnect to our higher self, we foster a powerful bond with our deck…
Tarot is a sacred mirror, one that will reflect back to us whatever energy we bring to it. When we intentionally utilize the Tarot as a tool to reconnect to our higher self and our inner knowing, we foster a powerful bond with our deck, building a bridge home to our intuition. The more we return to the Tarot in moments of pain, confusion, or identification, the deeper the connection to ourselves (and our deck) can become.
What is the Tarot?
The Tarot is a set of 78 archetypical images that are said to encompass the entire experience of what it is to be a human being in a lifetime. Every lesson, every opportunity, every feeling and every great cycle of change, growth and evolution are contained within the iconography and history of the cards. There are no “bad” cards; each one brings its own unique medicine.
The Tarot is split into three parts: The Major Arcana, The Minor Arcana and The Court Cards.
The Major Arcana are the macrocosmic energies of the Tarot. Ranging from Card 0 (The Fool) to Card 21 (The World), these cards represent the big picture, each one bringing a powerful invitation for our soul’s evolution.
The Minor Arcana are the microcosmic energies of the Tarot. They represent our feelings, beliefs, thoughts and experiences. The Minors are split into four suits: Wands (Fire), Cups (Water), Pentacles (Earth), Swords (Air).
The Court Cards are advanced level energies, inviting us to embody an aspect of the archetype on the card. (The Court Cards are not, as many believe, representative of other people on a whole. They can be, but are much more expansive than that.)
How do I choose a deck?
Let your heart decide! Allow yourself to be drawn to one organically. Whatever it is, trust yourself to recognize when your true deck calls to you.
How do I cleanse and care for my Tarot deck?
Smudging with sage, palo santo, or sweetgrass is an amazing way to cleanse your Tarot deck. Using sea salt and crystals for deeper cleansing is excellent, as well.
How do I pull cards from my deck?
Close your eyes and center yourself. Take some deep breaths and connect to your heart, diving deeply into your channel. Set your intention for the reading, asking for your guides and angels to assist in receiving the clarity you need, if that is a part of your personal practice.
Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
Choose your cards! There are many ways to do this, no way is the right one. Cutting the deck three times and pulling from the top, spreading the deck out in front of you and choosing intuitively — any way that feels right in the moment, honor it.
