Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia: Day One Diary

This guest post is from Katherine Lowe of Katherine Is Awesome!

Guess what guys? It’s that time of year again. Well it is for us down under. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia! This is kind of a special year – for S/S 2013-2014, we’re at a completely new venue and there are a bunch of well known fashion types on the guests lists and on the runways. Ever heard of Georgia May Jagger? Kelly Slater? Hanne Gaby Odiele? Bryan Boy? They’re all here. Combine them with all the great new Australian models and we’re going to have a good time. Just quickly – I’m Katherine, I’m a blogger from New Zealand and I’ll be bringing you snippets of what goes on this MBFWA from front of house, back of house, on the runways and on the street. Here’s a recap of day one!

Day one is done and dusted. I took it pretty easy today but even so, the day started at 7:30am for me, and hasn’t completely concluded yet – 16 hours later.

Day 1, PROS:

The Romance Was Born show. I mean, how can you not have enjoyed a show full of magic mushroom installations, models with faces full of glitter and mushroom shaped bowl cut pastel wigs, live music and psychedelic prints?

The plethora of top models. Julia Nobis has to be a stand out for me, as was New Zealand’s new face, 16 year old Holly-Rose Emery. Add them to Model Burnbook’s Cailin Hill, Ruby-Jean Wilson, Maddison Brown, Gabby Dover and Nicole Pollard (as well as a heap more) and you’ve got yourself a great show.

Water in goodie bags. There is no beating it.

Appearances by top International bloggers Tommy Ton (Jak & Jil), Susannah Lau aka Susie Bubble (Style Bubble), Phil Oh (Streetpeeper) and Bryan Boy.

Day 1, CONS:

The constant waiting. So much waiting, even from the very first show. Tonight’s Romance Was Born show was running about an hour late. Thought I might pass out. Thirty minutes to get a cab? I don’t think so mate.

A girl in a see-through tight white hologram skirt, with white knickers. I know this is fashion, but when is it going too far?

Here are some more photographic highlights of the day. Enjoy!

I’m really sad to see Free People talk so much about Aussie fashion week and make no mention of how dangerously unhealthy the models are. It’s all over the media here how the models are not given food and have to follow a strict liquid diet. One of the models in these photos has the waist circumference that a 7 year old should have – that should never be encouraged. I refuse to care about fashion week until the designers start caring about the health of their models.
