Connecting With Nature In A Jungle Made Of Concrete

As creatures of the earth, we all have a profound connection to Mother Nature. Some of us seem to sense this connection more than others, constantly feeling drawn to all aspects of the natural world around us.

Living in an urban environment can be really tough in this regard. The sounds, the lights, the constant interaction. There’s so much stimuli coming at us from every angle. The urge to connect with nature grows so overwhelming that there are times we don’t even know what to do with ourselves. Something just doesn’t feel right. But connecting with nature is certainly possible, even in the least natural of environments.

Surround yourself with the elements. Earth. Air. Fire. Water. Paint with earth tones and collect natural wooden furniture. Light incense. Light candles. Let a mixture of earthy and floral scents waft through your home. Find plant stores. Spend time in them. Breathe in the fresh, clean oxygen created by those clever little greens.

Fill your space with plants to the point that you feel as though you’re living in a greenhouse. Grow your own herbs on the windowsill. Make dinner with them. When you go outside, walk on the sunny side of the street. Let those rays beat down on you as though it’s their point of existence.

Feel your feet held by the earth with every step you take – and even more so when you stand in total stillness. Scan every tree branch for the sight of a baby bird. Adopt a kitten. Love him with your whole heart as you study his natural habits; how he races at top speed from one room to the next; the way he grooms himself with such grace.

Never forget that you were born from the earth. Allow yourself to be in awe of nature’s creations, and always, always be grateful for them. When the activities of daily life become too much to handle, know that there’s an ocean of stillness that always lives within you. And whatever you do, wherever you go, always remember to look up.
