From the beaches of Hawaii, via Southern California, here’s a look inside the world of the newest Philly girl and Assistant Buyer, Crystal.
Your position at Free People…
Assistant Buyer for Sweaters. (Previously a Visual Manager in Los Angeles for 3 ½ years at a few different Free People stores).
Favorite part of your job?
Seeing the product come to life!
Describe your personal style…
Meadow/Lou/Ginger! I’m a sucker for fringe and flowy. I never pass up a band tee and denim, or something low-cut and form-fitting for the right occasion/concert.
What makes you feel confident?
Completing a difficult workout, fresh/new skincare products, and a great-fitting pair of jeans.
Who is your style icon?
Keith Richards & Stevie Nicks.
Where are you from?
I was born in Hawaii, and was raised in a sleepy Southern California beach town (raised in the same house my mom grew up in, too).
What’s your favorite part about Philly?
I love the history, season changes, beautiful brick buildings and treelined streets. Being able to walk everywhere is such a plus! I’m not used to that coming from California since everything is so spread out. Philly is like a small NYC! Great food, and always something to do. The city has an upbeat pulse to it.
When you have a couple days off, what’s your favorite thing to do?
CAMP and day trip/getaways! There’s nothing like sleeping under the stars or just driving up/down the coast of California til you find a destination that calls to you. I’m excited to live on a new coast and explore new sites! Back in CA my boyfriend and I would pack up every couple of weeks and just drive until we found somewhere that spoke to us. Such a freeing feeling.
Favorite meal to cook for guests right now?
I’m always looking to Pinterest for plant-based cooking inspo. I have a 5 min (vegan) cashew cream sauce recipe that always stops my guests in their tracks, served over gnocchi and sautéed veggies. (To see my recipe Pinterest board, click here.)
Most memorable concert you’ve been to?
DESERT TRIP! (Located at the empire polo fields in Indio – the artists for the weekend were The Who, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters and The Rolling Stones. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at my highest level of happiness, seeing all of my favorite artists in one place. My boyfriend and I roadtripped out there and had the most memorable weekend! I wish I could relive it over and over again.
What are your beauty + wellness must-haves?
Mad Hippie, Tarte, and Laura Mercier are my must-haves for a fresh face! I’m always looking to try new wellness elixirs and potions. Moon Juice is fun, as well as HUM Nutrition. I love a good detoxifying vitamin pack.
Most embarrassing outfit you’ve ever worn.
Well, there definitely is not just one embarrassing outfit that haunts me. I would say anything I’ve tried wearing (on trend at the time) that wasn’t my true style ended up looking foolish on me. My best friend and I one time bought matching “DOPE” beanies to wear to a concert when we lived in DTLA. Big mistake. We looked ridiculous!!
How long have you been playing guitar? How did you get interested in learning?
When I was 8 years old, my mom was listening to classic rock (as per usual) and “Do You Feel Like We Do” came on (a groundbreaking song/guitar solo). From that moment on I knew I wanted to play! My birth father is a very talented guitarist/musician and my mom is a singer. It was just a matter of time when I’d pick up and start playing and singing.
What is your favorite song to play?
When I was growing up, the house was always filled with music. I fell in love with classic rock, folk music, metal, reggae, big band, and jazz + blues – just to name a few. I am constantly trying to learn new songs, and make them my own! I used to play local gigs in California, and I am hoping to find some new spots in Philly! Right now I am learning “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton.
Words of advice to give your younger self.
Be patient, listen to your body (rest when you need rest), and it’ll all work out the way it’s supposed to.
What’s in your freepeople.com shopping cart?
My cart changes on the weekly! Depending on what I’m looking for. Right now I have:
Happiness Runs Tank (10/10 highly recommend for working out in – I already own 3)
