the burg

last week i told you all about the trip fp jemma and i took to NYC for the day to visit some of our stores. well we had a small window of free time before our train back to philly so we hit williamsburg in brooklyn for a quick shopping session at stella dallas. this was my first time visiting the vintage store and i could have spent all day browsing the racks and rummaging through boxes in search of antique treasures. i love the smell of vintage stores…like your grandparents attic mixed with an old library of yellowed, crackling books. you always know you’re going to find something special and what that find will be is the mystery.

here are some photos from our shopping excursion…

what was my big find? i was absolutely smitten with the vintage rock tees hanging all over the store- so it broke my heart a little when i saw the sign saying they were part of the owner’s private collection and not for sale…. until I found a rack in the back with a sweet pink floyd t-shirt that i grabbed and would not let go of!

here’s another tip – follow up a day of vintage shopping with food and drinks at blackbird – a charming little corner spot on bedford ave that i would love to spend hours in, reading a book and people watching.  it’s got a great atmosphere with wooden shelves lined with books and an old wooden bar full of character.

free as a bird

one of our readers, annaliese, emailed me a little while back about a sculpture she had created that she wanted to share. she didn’t send any photos but her description was enough to peak my curiosity. i asked her to send along some photos as well, and here they are! read on for the description of the sculpture in her words…

“i made a tree branch grow forth from inside of an unwanted book, bringing life to the pages whose words have been forgotten, left in a charity shop where its bright green cover with a black silhouette of a forest and frolicking rabbits dancing about the undergrowth caught my gaze and sparked my imagination. within the grasp of the branch i made a nest from lines of text that i built up to become a home for a family of birds. above the nest the last bird is flying the nest, facing the time of flight or fall, beating its wings against the invisible air to reach that open sky its desperate gaze is locked onto, leaving behind an empty nest where a single feather lays, lingering like a memory, a remnant of the past.

the book is called “the forest lovers” and was the only material used for this sculpture with glue to bind its former flat pages together.”

what a beautiful description and sculpture! thanks so much for sharing, annaliese.

book club selection #3!

it’s a new month and it’s time for a new book club selection! for this selection we went with something that is very different from our last two, but similar in its messages about freedom and happiness.  the book is called “succulent wild woman” by sark, and was recommended by a fp girl here at the home office who told us she has given the book to all of her girlfriends because it is so full of positive inspiration.  plus, it’s a nice change since our last book (the perks of being a wallflower) focused on a male character and was written from a male perspective.  if you’re not familiar with sark, check out her website here.

we’ll give you all some time to check out the book and start reading, and then i’ll be posting images, quotes and inspiring passages from the book in the coming weeks. hope you enjoy!

the countdown is on!

summer getaways – the city

she’s the body conscious party girl who always seems to find herself with an occasion to dress up, put on some heels and flutter her lashes. her coolness exudes confidence and she and her friends draw attention from every corner. a night on the town, dinner and drinks with girlfriends, and daytime shopping are her favorite pastimes, mixed in with a drop of boy fun. sometimes it’s a mystery where you’ll find her, but she’ll catch your eye when you do.

she is ginger and her summer getaway is the city that never sleeps – new york. she is in her element among the crowds and stops traffic wherever she goes.  a day of shopping is capped off with drinks with her girlfriends overlooking the sparkling city lights.  she only returns to her suite as the sun comes up. located in chelsea, the xx suite is stylish yet affordable, with plenty of room for her to bring back some friends for a late night dance party before tired heads hit the pillow, in need of a good beauty sleep.

for her getaway ginger makes  sure to pack plenty of body con items to wear out on the town, with killer heels and eye catching jewelry.  the only other thing she needs are some skinny jeans and a cute top for brunch and daytime shopping excursions.

summer getaways – road trip!

lou is our tomboy all american girl who loves the great outdoors – so there is no better summer getaway for her than a cross country road trip.  she is inspired by being on the road and the vast American landscape that sprawls out before her.  from lush green forest to open plains to desolate ghost towns and sand dunes she drives with the windows down and the music blasting, the wind whipping her hair across her face.  she has a bad habit of stopping at western gas stations and rest stops where they sell cowboy hats, dream catchers and native american woven blankets that she picks up as souvenirs. the white topped mountains in the distance take her breath away.

lou doesn’t reach her destination until she can’t go any further – she has reached the pacific coast, and drives up highway one to big sur, one of the most beautiful spots in the US.  Here she hikes to a campground to meet up with others and share stories of the road. she swims in the river and takes hikes down to the beach, coming back in time to cook a campfire dinner and go to sleep, exhausted from the day’s activities, under a canopy of redwood trees.
