sxsw update

good morning and happy friday!

i heard from our fp girls down in austin and they’re having an amazing time already at sxsw – they told me about a couple of events taking place this weekend that they’re really excited about:

austin carniville started yesterday and runs through saturday, with a lineup of several great bands including major lazer and the walkmen – plus there will be rides, games, food and more. mmm funnel cake…

carniville is at the mexican american cultural center, 600 river st. in austin.

another event that our girls are attending is taking place tonight at the galaxy room. this showcase includes a handful of great bands such as the antlers, local natives, and the band they’re most excited about – an horse (pictured above). more info here.

so what is everyone doing this weekend? any exciting plans?

a little piece of paradise

one of our fpgirls just returned from vacation and shared these wonderful photos and story. take a moment and let us transport you to a place we think is pretty special…

vieques_3

vieques_4

there’s a small island tucked to the coast of Puerto Rico where horses run wild, beaches are made of flour soft sand, and a bio bay is teaming with millions of falling stars that burst into light when ever-so-slightly touched. this place has been a well kept secret by the few who live and travel there, but i wanted to share it with you, because word is starting to get out, and it’s beautiful and magical and if the secret is revealed, i’d rather it be to you first… it’s called Vieques. if a vacation is in your budget (and it’s pretty cheap to get there), go. now. enjoy. and tell us what you think.

thursdays on nw 23rd

any portland readers out there? on the third thursday of each month, northwest 23rd street, where our store is located, has a day of special events and discounts. celebrate the start of spring and stop by our store today for special treats, and a music mix with purchases over $50!

i’ve always wanted to visit portland and these photos are making me want to even more…that street looks so pretty.

golden filter

well sxsw is officially underway in austin… our fp girls are there and told me they’re excited about the urban outfitters shows starting today – they’re going to be pretty killer this year!  a ton of great bands will play at urban’s backlot throughout the festival – including local natives, who i wrote about yesterday, and this band, the golden filter:

i think these photos are amazing – taken by our fpgirl at last year’s sxsw.

st. patrick’s sweets

these st. patrick’s day goodies look so delicious! on the left are cupcakes brought in by our office coordinator with yummy apple sprinkles that were quickly gobbled up. on the right are oreo truffles made by our senior store manager to share with customers at our paramus, nj store – so if you’re in that area stop by and grab one before they’re gone!

hand-stitched blogging

another fp girl told me about this awesome embroidery by brooklyn artist iviva olenick.  she describes her work as small-scale, semi-autobiographical pieces that make up a hand-stitched blog. what a neat idea! the pieces include signs she sees on the street, maps of brooklyn and little quotes or things on her mind, and she also writes about the inspiration behind her projects on a blog called were i so besotted.

i really like the idea of sewing inspirational quotes or song lyrics onto blank tshirts or pillows! adding to my long list of projects i want to try…

Clog Mania!

Who would have thought that Clogs could make such an impact on the fashion scene? They are the type of shoe I usually associated with Milkmaids and Amsterdam.

However, Karl Lagerfeld and Alexa Chung have caused a Storm in the market, by making The Clog look super cool. The models at  Chanel’s Spring collection galloped down the runaway in these heavy footed clogs and Alexa has been seen looking mighty fine in them ever since.

We here at Free People fell in Love with them also. With this in mind I thought I would shine a light on the amazing selection we have here on the Free People site (click here). My favorite pair is the Charli Clog that I would wear with distressed boyfriend jeans, high-waisted skirts and pretty floral dresses.  These are definitely the shoe off the summer!
