During a busy day of running around an interacting with lots of people, I always like to have a fresh breath pick-me-up. Gum or mints can always do the trick, but it’s nice to have natural options made from products right in your kitchen. From fresh herbs to homemade mouthwash, here are 3 natural remedies for fresh breath.
1. Parsley leaves
Mint is widely known to help freshen breath, but chewing on parsley leaves can do the trick, too! Parsley contains chlorophyll, which is thought to have anti-bacterial properties. That, combined with its strong scent, will freshen your breath in no time.
2. Spices
Crunchy, exotic spices can freshen breath due do their antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Try mixing a blend of fennel, coriander, and whole cloves to chew on – it tastes like a delicious, fall treat!
3. Homemade cinnamon mouthwash
Lastly, you can make your own mouthwash out of breath-freshening ingredients! Just mix together 1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1 ½ teaspoons honey*, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 cup hot water (to melt the honey), and juice from 2 lemons. The cinnamon, honey, and baking soda fight odor-causing bacteria, while the lemon introduces a fresh, citrus scent. Baking soda can also help to whiten your teeth.
To use, swish about 2 tablespoons of mouthwash for about a minute. Store in an airtight jar. The ingredients may settle with time, so be sure to give the mixture a good shake before each use.
*To make this recipe vegan, feel free to omit the honey.
