How To Fake Freshly-Washed Hair

No time to shampoo? no problem! Read on to learn how to fake it…

Unwashed hair is a great thing. Going a few days between washes lets the hair produce its natural oil, which acts as a moisturizer and a barrier for protection. But what about those times we accidentally go a day too long without washing? Or those of us (myself included) with hair that likes to show signs of unwash in just a few hours?

I was so excited when I found out that Lulu Organics made an exclusive geranium rose scent for us in their natural Scented Hair Powder. This stuff is absolutely magical. I turned to the creator herself – Linda “Lulu” Aldredge – to shine some light on the art of keeping hair looking fresh, all day, every day. Take it away, Lulu!

I have super fine hair so it looks dirty even if I’ve washed it the day before – though I have a few tricks to keep the flat and oily vibes at bay:

Hair Powder: Obviously this is my go-to, and there are a number of ways to apply it. The safest way is to shake a small amount into the palm of the hand, rub your hands together and then work through the roots of your hair. I would repeat this process all over the scalp until you feel like the look of oil in your root has dissipated. Sometimes people like to use a blush brush and apply it to the scalp in the same way you would apply powder to your face. I personally have gotten to the place where I sprinkle it directly into the root… THIS method is not for the faint of heart. It is very easy to apply too much, so only try it if you’re feeling confident and maybe have nowhere to be.

Boar’s Bristle Hairbrush: I actually can’t get through my day without a really good boar’s hairbrush – I prefer the The Shine Brush or the Monroe Margaux. It’s important to brush the hair every day to move the oil at the root of your hair to the ends, which tend to dry out and get brittle. I always brush my hair liberally at night and on a ‘dirty’ hair day I’ll apply some Hair Powder to my roots, brush out my hair and tie it up in a twisted top knot so in the morning my roots are drier, have more lift and I have a really nice, natural wave.

Non-Aerosol Hairspray: Once I have a really good wave going in the morning to prevent it from falling (with my super fine hair, it alllllllways falls), I will set it with a good hairspray. Lately I’ve been using Number 4 Non-Aerosol Hairspray. I apply it 80’s-style: bent over with my hair hanging down!

A huge thanks to Linda for spilling her secrets! You all must try her Scented Hair Powder and Lavender Sage Hair Oil – to die for!

Have a great hair day, friends. ;)

  1. Bonus: it’s not nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. I need this in my life because my hair likes to go approximately 2.5 days in between washings. In other words I can have good looking hair in the morning and then look like total crap by lunch! Definitely going to try the hair powder!

  2. Thanks for the tip. I would really love to know how to manage my shorter hair that has just enough curl to be irritating. If I do nothing with it my hair is frizzy. I typically flat iron it but because it is shorter I cannot put it up at night. I can usually make it one day between washing. It is completely pathetic after that.

  3. Zoe,
I have a tip to share with you for your ‘body’ supplies curling and frizz. Give your flat iron the toss. They only damage hair and the procedure does not last.
Get yourself some “IC Hair Polisher, Straightening Formula.” It comes in a red container. This can be found at beauty supply stores for a great price.
The Hair Polisher will smooth frizz, make your hair feel moisturized, slick and smooth. My hair is the sort that a hair brushing is a futile maneuver, so I am very pleased with the ‘slick’ results.
The Straightening Formula is pure magic. It stops my waves cold!
Hope you are as pleased with the product as I am!

  4. These are great tips! Thanks for sharing :)
I also have very fine hair that gets dirty very easily, so I’ve always had to wash it every day. I started dying it a color a bit lighter than mine and I’m now able to wash it every other day, I’m so happy <3 I also use a bit of baby powder when I'm not washing it.
