Where are you from? How has this shaped the person that you are today ?

I’m from Okoboji, Iowa originally. I grew up in the country, running around, climbing trees, playing in the dirt and making friends with every little critter I could find. You know the saying, “you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl”? That’s me. I’m more comfortable outdoors. I love getting lost. I love to go on adventures, and I don’t mind taking the road less traveled.

Where do you currently call home? Any hidden gems in your city that you can share with us?

I’ve called Portland home since I was 8 years old. There are so many perfect places that I go to in order to stay centered and find peace. This city really is my playground. I have a favorite tree in Council Crest Park. Climbing it is like climbing a ladder and, once you reach the top, you have a full view of Portland and the mountains that surround it. There’s something special about sitting up in a tree and being able to observe the world. That tree would have to be my favorite spot.

How do you typically spend your days?

It’s hard to tell you what my typical day is like because I try to do many different things from one to the next. A friend told me I was like a melting pot of passions. It’s hard to focus in on one, so I go through phases of learning and doing. Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time at the coast, hiking around, making pies and taking photos with friends. You can find me daydreaming, adventuring or with my head buried in my sketchbook a lot of the time. I’m a space case, but I like it that way.

If your style was directly related to a character in a movie, who would it be?

There’s no character I can honestly think of that describes my style. I play with fashion – my style can go from skate/surfer girl to a flirty mermaid to city chic in a matter of days. I can’t really put another person’s face to my image – I am me. My friends told me they would describe me as a Lilo (from “Lilo & Stitch”) & Ariel (from “The Little Mermaid”) and I think I’m ok with that.

What’s one thing you are willing to share with us that a stranger walking down the street wouldn’t be able to tell from first glance?

I’m an old soul. I love to play classical piano. I prefer to stay in. I don’t mind being mellow and reserved. I’m into a lot of things that most people my age don’t like, or haven’t taken to yet. This has made me kind of a misfit my entire life. Although I get along well with people, I connect more with those more my senior. I feel like this translates into my style, as well. I don’t often get caught up with trends, and I often opt for older styles.

If you had to move to another state or country besides the one you live in now, where would it be, and why?

Australia! Oh, Australia. The people, the fashion, the beaches, the kangaroos! I’ve always had an obsession with the Outback, and to be able to live there and fully immerse myself in it would be such a dream. A lot of my favorite designers are there as well…to be around such inspiring people all the time would truly be such a gift.

What would you say are the three most important things in your life?

Firstly, inspiration is huge for me. If I feel uninspired, I know something in my life needs to change. I’m constantly searching for the next thing or experience that will spark that fire in my belly. Secondly, the people you surround yourself with are incredibly important. If those around you are constantly driving you to create and follow your dreams you’ve found the right ones. I’m incredibly lucky to know some of the amazing individuals that I do, and every single one of you is greatly valued and appreciated. Lastly, courage is one of the most outstanding things in life. You can have all of these amazing, wonderful dreams and goals but, if you hold yourself back from chasing them just because you’re scared, you’ll never get there. Have the courage to do what you love and I believe you will never live in regret.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

Honestly, staying in, watching Star Wars and eating ice cream all at the same time. I always feel so unproductive but it’s so rewarding. It’s very confusing! But I enjoy it too much to not indulge every now and then.

What music have you been listening to recently?

I’ve been on such an oldies kick – it’s awesome. My favorites are Santana, The Smiths, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Earth Wind & Fire. But my two favorite songs probably ever are “Brandy” by The Looking Glass and “In The Summertime” by Mungo Jerry. Other than that, just ripping surfer rock and, honestly? I really, really like Black Sabbath. I don’t think many people expect that from me!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Slow down and enjoy the moment. I’m naturally very restless about everything. I always feel an itch to be moving or doing something. When I’m able to mellow out and be an observer and get comfortable in the space I’m in, I’m much happier.

What does being ‘free’ mean to you?

Freedom is the ability to be yourself, unrestricted and without stress or worry. It is the ability to get up tomorrow and move to a new place because you feel like it. To be free is floating through the ocean like a fish and being comfortable enough in your own skin to do so, gracefully. You can control your own freedom and as soon as you realize that, nobody can take it from you.

Love her style and her photos are so great. She’s definitely a spitting image of what Free People is all about.
