Making hair the solution, and not the problem…
This article comes from our contributor and friend, Carlen Altman.
Hi dear Free People blog reader. Is it just me or do you ever look at vintage issues of Playboy and stare in awe and amazement at the abundance of pubic hair? Where did it all go? What kind of evil tyrant told us we had to wax it off? I don’t know about you, but whoever said that women are the “weaker” of the genders have probably never experienced a Brazilian bikini waxing followed by a night in high heels (or ahem, childbirth — but that’s for another post, another time!)
Luckily for me (and maybe you too), the “pubic tides” are turning, and more and more women out there are giving up the “necessity” of the painful time-consuming act of waxing in favor of a more natural look. (…though if you want to keep waxing, that’s fine, too! After all, it is your body!)
Whether this below-the-belt style shift from “Brazilian landing strip” towards more of a “full George W.” (I just made that up — spread it!) is a testament to women’s body acceptance, increasingly busy schedules or an act of rebellion against the patriarchy is unclear.
What is clear, however, is that for the women out there who are letting things grow as Mother Nature intended but also want a little oomph if you will, a new product called Fur Oil which is now available at Free People has your back – er crotch… (P.S. Do people still say crotch?)
Below I had a chance to speak to Laura Schubert, one of the founders of Fur Oil and learn more…
Hi Laura! So what exactly is Fur Oil, and what led you to inventing it?
Fur Oil is the first pubic hair care oil made of nine all natural oils with no phthalates, parabens, silicones, artificial fragrances or colors. Used daily, it softens hair and diminishes ingrowns.
Fur started as a conversation between sisters. We were discussing exciting trends in beauty towards natural products and defining your own beauty, and away from prescribed standards.
As we talked, we realized available body hair products were not in line with this movement — the ingredients were harsh, the packaging was unsophisticated, and they focused only on removal – hair as a problem.
Fur is about taking care of the unique environment of body hair and skin with elevated, natural products — to treat it like your Fur, which is what it is, not an embarrassing growth that must be removed. We created the products we wanted — ones that would take care of your hair and skin no matter how much hair we chose to keep.
Great. Can I use Fur Oil on other parts of my body such as the hair on my head?
Absolutely! It’s great for any part of the body where you want to care for both hair and skin such as legs, under the bum, underarms, chest and beards. A lot of people get ingrowns wherever there is skin and hair. It also makes a great scalp treatment in these winter months – massage it in, leave it for a bit (e.g. go to the gym) and wash out.
I will try this! This is a weird question, but will it stain your underwear?
This isn’t a weird question at all – during the development phase with our chemist we specifically formulated it to be quick-drying and non-staining. Just apply Fur Oil after bathing, get dressed, and you’re all set.
How would you describe the smell of Fur Oil?
We didn’t add any specific fragrances to Fur Oil though a lot of people describe it as “spa-like” — it does have a light lemon/lavender scent that dissipates after several minutes. It’s not about masking or covering your natural scent.
Why did you choose the specific ingredients you did?
It took us almost a year to formulate Fur Oil as we wanted to make sure it worked really well while also meeting quality and safety standards. For example, Fur Oil has been safety tested to European regulation standards, which are stricter than US ones. The ingredients we chose had to be efficacious for softening skin and hair while preventing ingrowns.
The key ingredients in Fur Oil are:
— Grapeseed oil: quick drying
— Jojoba oil: softens hair and skin; mimics the molecular structure of skin’s natural oils
— Clary sage seed oil: reduces inflammation
— Tea tree oil: inhibits bacteria that contribute to ingrowns
In your opinion, what does it mean to be “free?”
For the modern man or woman, it’s about having options. That’s why we created Fur. Our products were created to care for pubic hair and skin no matter how much you decide to keep, whether it is full, bare or anything in between. Fur encourages you to be free about how you want to care for yourself!
Do you have any advice for girls out there with unusual business ideas they don’t know how to get off the ground? (aka my edible beanbag chair idea? Psst don’t steal it! Just kidding.)
We’ve learned that a great idea needs great execution in order to succeed, so don’t be tentative when going to market, even if it is unusual! Also, persistence: the most important thing is to start, and then to keep going. And going.
Thank you Lauren (and for you out there reading this!) I am sincerely very intrigued and can’t wait to try Fur Oil!!
P.S. As an animal rights activist I am not sure if I am supposed to feel good or bad about this news here…
