January Catalog Sneak Peek: NY vs. LA
We love LA… beaches, surfing, sunshine, rollerskating, tacos, convertibles, palm trees, Mel’s diner, the LACMA, Hollywood and more. We love NYC… cab rides, late nights, hot dogs, the subway, the MET, Times Square, the list goes on. Two iconic cities on opposite coasts that couldn’t be more different, but we love them just the same. Our January catalog is an homage to these two great cities and their individual style, featuring Jessica Hart shot by Chrissy Piper in Los Angeles and Karlie Kloss shot by Guy Aroch in New York City.
So, of course, we have to ask…

Savage Beauty

While I was studying fashion design at university, I was introduced to the wonderful and magnificent world that was created by Alexander McQueen. I became fascinated in his approach to Fashion… I found him an incredibly interesting person. He did not just create fashion for women to wear, he created stories, visually stimulating performances as captivating as a movie you want to watch over and over again.
His background in tailoring made him a perfectionist. Every little detail was done so well that I was often left breathless.
One of the first shows I was introduced to was “Deliverance” Spring/Summer 2004, and I think it has remained one the most beautiful fashion shows I have ever seen.
Deliverance was inspired by the 1970’s Sydney Pollack film ‘They Shoot Horses Don’t They’. When the famous dance marathon theme came alive and models and professional dancers sashayed intensely around each other, the runway became a theoretical performance. I loved the disturbance of this show, and the contradiction it created. Beautiful craftsmanship against the backdrop of America during the great depression was unsettling – a battle between the beautiful and the damned. At the end of the show, the professional dancer wears the exact same dress as model Karen Elson, who opened the show, but the sequins are tarnished and the embroidery unpicked and distressed. This show got me good, and I was then hooked to everything he did.
As you can imagine when his life ended, it broke my heart. Such a maverick was lost. However, a couple of days ago, I managed to experience some of his magic at the Met in New York. The “Savage Beauty” exhibit was such a beautiful and eerie experience that took my breath away.

my kind of stamps
i have always loved album covers…i think they’re a very special form of art that tends to get lost in all the online sites that allow you to download music these days. having the actual album means something to me, and to a lot of people who still insist on buying them, and when my dad gives me his old record collection one day (i hope…!), a lot of the albums are going in frames and up on my wall.
so i think it’s really cool that next year, britain’s royal mail will launch a new series of stamps that celebrate ten classic british album covers. for the near-impossible task of selecting which ten to use, they did a series of polls and conferred with music editors, designers and writers. the stamps will have the unique shape seen in the images above, allowing for the vinyl disc poking out of the sleeve.

my brother and his partner, who live one of my many dream lives, spend 3 months out of the year here in philadelphia with family and the rest of the year in their home in hawaii. they, among other things, are local beekeepers. before they left this year, they harvested the hives and left me with a jar of local, organic honey. you can see the difference between the smaller jar of honey that was harvested here, and the darker honey from hawaii. apparently, when done organically, the color depends on the flowers the bees choose to collect pollen. check out their website to learn more about organic, biodynamic honey. i’d like to learn how to keep bees eventually when I have some space, but for now i’ll enjoy these gifts from them. wanted to give them some love for the cool things they are doing. xo.

1. it is said that eating local honey can help prevent and tame outside allergies.
2. there are said to be 212,000 beekeepers in the US, and about 95% of them are hobbyists.
3. the white house vegetable garden is home to a hive.
