beautiful stuff.  based in brooklyn, the wild unknown is a line of handmade goods and artwork inspired by nature, in particular summers spent in the catskill mountains and on the shores of lake superior, as well as their favorite songs and musicians.

i’m such a sucker for feathers. and bob dylan. see more here.

woodstock handmade houses

before woodstock became known worldwide for the most famous music festival of all time, it was a quiet town in rural new york that artisans, painters, musicians and freethinkers called home.  they lived off the land and made things by hand- even their homes.  they used local stone, wood and scavenged materials to create shelters that are as unique as they are impressive- ranging from the cave-like dens and teepees to cabins and stone structures.  these homes are documented in the book “woodstock handmade houses” and turning the pages is like stepping into one hidden world after another, imagining all the stories each sanctuary holds.  it is a constant source of inspiration that will never age.

lollapalooza lineup announced

the lollapalooza lineup is here!

green day and lady gaga? no thank you. soundgarden, arcade fire, strokes, phoenix, MGMT, jimmy cliff, black keys, national, spoon, grizzly bear, wolfmother, yeasayer, the XX, edward sharpe (and i could keep going)? YES PLEASE.

one of the hardest things about festival season is deciding which one to go to, because only in my wildest dreams can i attend them all. this just might be a lollapalooza year, although i still think the sasquatch lineup is the best… lollapalooza will take place august 6th-8th in grant park, chicago.

don’t forget to stay tuned to the blog as a couple of our girls are headed to coachella next weekend – and if you’re going, maybe we’ll see you there!

a suitcase for morocco

the climate in morocco is warm almost all year round, although temperatures do differ depending on where you stay – coastal towns are much cooler and marrakesh can be pretty hot, especially in summer months.  an item like the fes romper would be the first thing in my suitcase because it’s casual and cool for daytime but could be dressed up at night.  for the hot days exploring the medina and sightseeing around the city pack some shorts, a tank and some comfy sneakers or sandals.  layering pieces like the scandalous lace top and irina slip dress are perfect and take up little room in your suitcase, and of course- lots and lots of gold jewelry and a sun hat!

items pictured above are as follows:

1. medina sun hat; 2. 3/4 sleeve scandalous lace top; 3. sunshine for my love dress; 4. golden fern bracelet; 5. fes romper; 6. chaabi chandelier earrings; 7. cast net bag; 8. coin drop belt; 9. cleo lace up sandal; 10. haiku tank; 11. irina slip dress; 12. stained and distressed keds; 13. benji’s linen cargo short.

heavy metal

one of our favorite trends for spring are wrists piled with bracelets and bangles- brass, silver or gold, it doesn’t matter, and the more the merrier is a key motto here.  mix delicate gold leaf patterns with bulky mesh and brightly painted flowers for texture with a touch of the unexpected. this look has a multi-cultured and exotic feel, giving the illusion that you’ve traveled the world collecting pieces from different places along the way to display like artwork on your arms.  give a simple summer dress a  mysterious edge and turn a casual daytime look like shorts and a tee into rocking evening attire – just layer on some bracelets and you’re good to go!

Our New April Creative Concept

April kicked off with a beautiful Easter weekend and our direct business kicked off with a beautiful visual – Sweet Jasmine which is out story for April.

Here’s the mindset:

A girl’s life captured through accidental snapshots, a memoir…
Reminiscent of a girl who has just come back from a well-travelled journey in Asia. She’s brought back with her a beautiful wise story full of depth and emotion. She’s pinned her thoughts in photos, incidentals that are placed together creating a feeling of solitude and luminosity.

Sweet jasmine was born through Asian watercolor landscape and simple floral illustrations. Think apple branches, lotus flowers, daisies and doves, made up of cool blues, royals, pinks and purples as well as minty greens and Chinese red. Pretty/sweet elements are toned down with crude/rough collages of graph and ripped paper. Branches and pencil detail contribute to a flux of affection.
Portraits of flat shot clothes have charm, while beautiful wallpaper backdrops animate a soft feminine feel.

And, as always… our fp girl in mind.

The items above are:

Barbary Coast Dress, Blank Beavis Relaxed Straight Legged Levis, Hand Drawn Henley and the Beaded Chandelier Earrings.

april catalog drops tomorrow!

when we did a survey on the blog earlier this year we asked you all to answer the question “if the free people blog were a travel destination, where would it be?”  topping out the responses was india, and a close second was morocco…which was interesting because we had just finished shooting our april catalog there!  morocco is a mythical place with an incredibly rich culture and fabled cities like tangier, the vibrant gateway to africa, casablanca, made legendary by the 40s hollywood movie named after it, and of course marrakech, where our team stayed.

daniel egneus

a fellow fp girl told me about illustrator daniel egneus and in looking through the work on his website i found myself lost in the realm where fantasy and reality meet.  egneus combines dark, edgy imagery with pops of watercolor and careful and realistic detail with sketchy lines to create images that can only exist in your wildest dreams… but leave you wishing they were real.
