DIY Valentine’s: Handmade Love

February 8th, 2012 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Our Handmade Love event is this Saturday! Make sure you check out your local store’s facebook page (a full list can be found here) to find out what DIY Valentine craft they’ll be making – and stop by on Saturday to make something special for your friend/loved one and pick up an outfit for your night :)

Each store will be doing one of the following crafts, and I put together tutorials for each one – so if you can’t make it out to our event, or don’t have a local store, here are four great DIY Valentines that are sure to warm any heart!

DIY Embroidered Cards

IMG 2696 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

What you need: paper, needle, thread, scissors, envelopes (optional)

IMG 26721 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

I found this raw edged paper at my local crafts store, and used some dark red embroidery thread and  a regular sewing needle.

IMG 2711 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

I free-handed the hearts, but here’s a useful tip – if you want to write something, or make sure your heart is done perfectly, use pencil on the back and follow the pencil lines as you sew.

IMG 2721 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

Aren’t they sweet? You could also embroider the envelopes you put them in.

DIY Unraveling Letter

IMG 2699 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

Inspired by this project.

IMG 2674 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

What you need: wooden spools, letter stamps, ink, ribbon or fabric – I found all of the above at AC Moore.

IMG 26722 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

Cut your length of ribbon (you could also wait until after you stamp it, to be sure you have enough room).

IMG 2680 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

Use the stamps to write out your desired message or quote, tape or glue the end of the ribbon (where the quote/message ends) to the spool, and wind!

DIY Fabric Scrap Gift Tags

IMG 2694 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

This project was inspired by Creature Comforts blog – and you can download the manila tags and word template over there as well.

IMG 2685 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

IMG 2687 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

For sturdier tags, print the manila tags on card stock. Then simply cut your piece of fabric and word/phrase of choice, glue them on and you’ve got a personalized gift tag to make your present extra special.

IMG 2688 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

DIY Mini Book

IMG 2663 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

The last project was inspired by one of our Love Letter submissions. Make your best friend or loved one a mini hand-stitched book full of quotes, photos and memories :)

IMG 2645 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

What you need: Various pieces of paper (again, I got this paper at my local craft store), a needle and thread, glue, scissors, and photos and other embellishments of your choosing!

Untitled DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

Stack up your pages in the order you want them, and stitch them together along one side. The paper I used was kinda thick, so I had to poke the needle through some of the sheets one at a time, but it wasn’t too difficult. Once you have your book sewn together, you can start adding photos and quotes and other fun stuff :)

IMG 2657 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

Untitled2 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

I had so much fun making this – I want to start making them for friends and family as birthday cards!

IMG 2722 DIY Valentines: Handmade Love

I hope you guys are feeling inspired! Now check out our website for a rundown of all the stores and what projects they’ll be doing, as well as other activities, and from there you can RSVP for the event of your choice!

We’d love for you to live tweet the action and any pictures accompanied by the hashtag #FPHandMadeLove -  tweet us links of your posts about the event accompanied with the #FPHandMadeLove hashtag, and we’ll be compiling images and links to the posts we love and recapping them here on the blog the week after the event!

A New Free People Girl: Meet Molly

February 8th, 2012 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Molly has that classic retro look – it’s preppy and sophisticated but in a cool modern way. She takes signature styles and makes them fresh again; her clothes have details such as tipping and pleating and she loves the Peter Pan collar like no other. She’s reserved but her personality exudes confidence… you’ll see her walking elegantly in a city, perched in an old library or quietly sitting in a coffee shop soaking in her thoughts.

Molly is our new style girl who was inspired by the retro things in life; she gives vintage a modern twist! To celebrate Molly’s debut online and in our catalog, we did a special photo shoot featuring FP Jemma, who embodied Molly perfectly – we want to thank the lovely people at One Shot coffee shop in Philly for letting us take photos, be sure to check out their place it’s pretty great – a wonderful atmosphere and delicious food and coffee!

Q&A with our Makeup Artist

February 7th, 2012 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Did you guys catch our live Q&A on twitter today with our makeup artist Deanna? It was so much fun and we got some really great tips – in case you missed it, here are some highlights :)

IMG 2628 Q&A with our Makeup Artist

Q: How can i make my face look slimmer? To enhance my cheek bones…

7d5cecb251ac11e1b9f1123138140926 6 Q&A with our Makeup Artist

Deanna: Nars Zen is a perfect blush for contouring your cheeks and making your face look slimmer – using a brush, apply just below cheek bone and blend in to skin.

Q: For someone who hates lipstick, what is a good product to use that gives your lips color and lasts?

Deanna: Nars, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier all have great tinted lip balms, even Burt’s Bees we love! Nars has a great variety of colors, and the texture is great – not too glossy.

IMG 2629 Q&A with our Makeup Artist

Q: why does face powder always make my skin look cakey and old?

Deanna: It’s the combination of powder and how the powder is applied – it’s better to use a loose powder and a brush – I always use a brush, on shoots and in the studio. A sheer loose powder with a yellowish color is what works best – a good one is Bobbi Brown Sheer Powder Loose Finish in pale yellow. Dip the brush in the powder and tap off, apply to t zones, chin, and forehead – don’t powder your cheeks too heavily.

Q: How do I get Ginger’s look in the February catalog?

Deanna: For Ginger we used Nars Mambo eyeliner – a brown shade – along the lash line and extended out to get a winged eye, and along the bottom lash line to join with the top and accentuate the almond shape. Use a narrow brush to smudge the line and get a smoky eye. Curl the eyelashes, lots of mascara, and a bit of sheer gold highlight on the inner corners of the eye. Contour the cheek with Nars Zen, and a sexy pink lip – we like Nars Dolce Vita or Roman Holiday. Finish with red nail polish!

Here’s another tip: Before applying a matte lip color, exfoliate your lips – we LOVE Fresh Sugar Lip Polish!

  • fp julia says:

Hi guys – we appreciate your feedback but we do not want to share negative and personal attacks on the model.
Christian – ginger is one of the fp girls that Freja embodies in the catalog, you can learn more about them on our website right now!

  • Christian says:

Who is Ginger?? That is Freja Beha Erichsen, a very well-known runway/editorial model. She is not freakishly thin, I’m sorry. When you see an anorexic you KNOW IT, it’s shocking. Bones would be jutting out, and skin would have a sunken look. I used to see a girl jogging along the same road, everyday. She was undoubtedly anorexic, you saw her skeleton before you saw her, that’s how shocking it is. They also have severe hair loss & a “peach fuzz” on their skin in some cases. It’s like seeing a ghost. I wish this cry-wolf-anorexia thing would cease, it’s so tired. Research the disease before diagnosing every thin person you see. You should be more worried about the disease of obesity in this country.

  • Lisa says:

They took my down..thought that might happen. But seriously, this is the first time that I have been shocked (in a bad way)by the sight of a model in a free people catalog. Usually the girls are shockingly beautiful and healthy looking, so I was really surprised…and when I read another girls comment about wanting to get Gingers look it made me
Feel sad. I just dont think that her look should be put out there as a standard to hold ones self against, or to admire…she looks Ill. Let me make it clear that I don’t “hate” anyone, especially not for the way they look, but this girl looks seriously unhealthy. I can’t even imagine how many impressionable young girls look through the free people catalog and try to immatate the look of the models…that’s what they are there for right? To help bring a face to the brand and sell clothes to girls who admire them.after seeing her I wonder how many girls skipped dinner. I’m tired of the “models are supposed to be built like coat hangers” argument. I’d rather see the clothes on real people than hangers..and before you get all up in arms about me “hating on thin people”, so you know I’m 5′8 and 120, I eat extremely healthfully and get lots of exercise. I think this models looks warranted all of the “anorexia” comments, her looks are a big departure from the free people norm.

NY vs. LA style contest: Meet the NY Winner!

February 7th, 2012 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Last week we got to know more about our California winner of the NY vs. LA style contest, and now let’s meet our New York winner, Audrey!

Winningphoto1 NY vs. LA style contest: Meet the NY Winner!

Her winning photo – get the look with the all over lace babydoll top, washed vegan leather short, vintage sweater tall sock, tall boots, polka scarf and plaid and straw fedora.

R1 03722 007A NY vs. LA style contest: Meet the NY Winner!

Three words that best describe NYC style are: Urban, Elegant, Unique

What is your favorite trend this season?

Some big NYC trends for this season are peter pan collars, embellishments (studding, eyelets, gems, etc.) and playing with sheer and matte fabrics in the same garment. I have to say right now I am really into the sheer/matte fabrics!! The sheer look goes GREAT with a FP lacey bandeau!

What do you love most about New York?

Everyone has a purpose in New York. The energy of the city is like no other place. Everyone is full of major drive and ambition; it is inspiring to be in NY.

How would you describe your personal style? Which free people girl are you?

I have to say I am a Lou girl! NYC might be disappointed in me! I love to get dressed up once in a while, but you will usually catch me in baggy rugged sweaters, tunics, chunky jewelry and boots (lots of layering!) My friends would definitely say I am the “boy girl.”

My 5 favorite FP items right now:
