sarah lewis

we’ve posted about the amazing jewelry designer sarah lewis on the blog before – as a former member of the fp team she is a part of the free people family and we love carrying her designs. she also has an adorable store in philly called adorn.  read on for a brief interview with sarah and to see photos of her beautiful store and jewelry!

How did you get started as a jewelry designer?

I’ve been making jewelry for as long as I can remember!  When I was really young, I did a lot of beadwork and macramé, and then started working with glass when I was in high school.  I started working with silver and stone while living in Arizona. I have only been focusing all of my energy on my jewelry business for the past year, (before that, I was working for Free People!), but so far it has been going well.  I guess the way that I got started was just making the initial decision to go for it!

Where do you draw inspiration for your work?

I draw inspiration from everything around me.  My mind is always going, thinking of new jewelry designs.  I also am really inspired by the natural beauty of the materials that I work with.  Because so much of what I do is based on the materials that I work with, I really love going to gem and mineral shows to search for material.  I often can pick up a piece, and immediately picture what I will make out of it.  I am also inspired by the past.  I find a lot of materials and design ideas by shopping at flea markets, and vintage and thrift stores.  While staying true to my own earthy and bohemian style, I also draw inspiration from fashion.  I try to create pieces that are beautiful and timeless, but also stylish and on trend.  I also think of jewelry styles as how they relate to apparel, what they could be worn with, and how they could be used to complete an outfit.

What are some of your styles that you’re really excited about right now?

I am really excited about some of my recent ring styles.  I’ve been doing a lot of rings with drusy quartz, amethyst, and crazy lace agate.  I also really like my new gemstone fringe bib necklace, and my concentric circles crystal necklace.  I also am currently working on a new collection of jewelry and handbags for FP for holiday that I am really excited about – so watch out for them in November!

What are some of your other hobbies?

I really love to travel, and hang out with my friends, and I live for seeing live music – so I usually combine the three!  Also, even though I live in the city, I love the outdoors.  I try to go hiking, snowboarding, and make trips to the beach as much as I can.

How would you describe your personal style? What are some of your favorite free people items?

I would describe my style as earthy and feminine by day and rockstar by night – so I am a total Free People girl!  I am obsessed with all of the versions of the birds of paradise dress, and  I could not live without my fp intimates.  I wear my bandeaus and halter tops all the time, and .I own two sequin slips that I have probably worn hundreds of times!  They are so great for layering, I can always find new ways to wear them.  I also have a few FP sweaters that will probably stay in my wardrobe forever, because they are so soft and comfy, and I love the FP beach styles too!

What is your motto?

Work hard, but play hard too.  I am a total workaholic, but I love what I do so much, that it doesn’t really seem like work.  My business keeps me so busy that I often have trouble breaking away.  But I know that it is important to take breaks and go out and have fun!

What does free mean to you?

To me, freedom means being able to be creative everyday, making a living doing what I love, staying connected with nature and spending time with the people I love.

Outfit of the day

Yesterday here at the office the lovely ladies from our NY showroom stopped by for one of our meetings. It’s always so lovely when they come to visit us as they bring so much energy with them.

Coming from one of the biggest fashion capitals in the world — NY — they always turn it up a notch when it comes to style!

My eyes were drawn to this perky ensemble…

Her look reminds me of a slightly hippified Jane Birkin while the glasses give her a modified Annie Hall Look.

Here shes been pretty creative with our Free People clothes. She’s wearing one of Fp floral rompers with the crochet top worn casually over the top and… why not, a little peek-a-boo of our lace bandeau.

Falls Hot New Looks (Part 3)

Why we love it

It has come from our love of slips. Sheerness feels so fresh especially going into fall and especially wearing chunky boots with something sheer, we really loved the contrast of pretty and tough.  This trend feels so Free People we couldn’t ignore it.

How we’ll wear it

Lacey details and body con slips are something we are known for, so we wanted to freshen them up and bring them on trend. Rather than wearing them underneath, we put them on the outside so they didn’t get hidden.  There are so many ways to do this trend. It’s a real easy one to get into straight away and beat the rest of the fashion pack.  Just team a chiffon or mesh slip over skinny jeans and throw on an oversized sweater for an understated hint of sheer peeking out from underneath. Or, go for it with a sheer maxi slip over a shorter body con slip and style with chunky boyfriend boots and tough leather jacket to get the whole look.

Falls Hot New Looks (part 2)

Why we love it

This feels really new for FP, although we’ve always loved our comfy, easy, beachy pieces, we recognized this season that they could be worn in a cooler more edgy way.

How we’ll be wearing it

There’s a street style feeling to this trend, so it’s really about wearing this look with your own attitude and plenty of confidence. The key item is the knit pant, but styled up so they don’t look like everyday joggers.  We love them cropped at the knee and worn with a wedged statement shoe or chunky military boot for a fashion twist.

The fabrics are super soft and in muddy heathery colors that feel like the end of summer and have that cozy feel to take you into fall.   It’s slouchy and sexy so we are loving the oversized tops and sweaters and anything worn off the shoulder to get this look spot on.

Falls Hot New Looks

From maxi length and shaggy coats,  mesh and boudoir details as outterwear, and fashion’s new sporty mood, these are Free Peoples trends to get to know this Fall. What are they? How to wear them? here’s where to find out…

We want to inspire you before Falls sneaks up upon us

Here’s details from the people behind the scenes:

Why we love it

“We’re all excited about the maxi length and believe it’s gonna be HUGE for A/W 10,  whether its dresses, skirts or trousers, It’s our bohemian girl and a very traditional free people trend that we are excited about”

How we’ll be wearing it

“We love it updated into fall with shaggy fur coats and platforms or clogs.  It totally reminded us of Penny Lane from the movie Almost Famous. We wanted to update our Boho roots with a bit of rock and roll and so we love this trend to mix in cool graphic tees, beaten up leather and worn in jeans.  Like shes been hanging out on a tour bus all summer with the band and is coming home with an eclectic trunk full of clothes she picked up on the way. Jewelry is really strong in here, especially rings on every finger and long pendant necklaces have a 70’s hippy vibe about them that’s always cool”

Stay tuned for two more trends we’re loving right now!

almost famous

one of our newest items is this fuzzy faux fur jacket that we’ve dubbed the almost famous fur jacket. inevitably, images and snippets of the movie of that name come to mind.  there was a period of time when i was in college when i would watch this movie with my roommate to the point where we had it memorized and wanted to get a pet turtle and name it russell. i always felt like i was really meant to be a band-aid, traveling the states in a tour bus with a grungy long-haired band… living for music, love and nothing else.

here are some images, some from the movie and some from elsewhere, that make this feeling come rushing back.

“i always tell the girls, never take it seriously, if you never take it seriously, you never get hurt, you never get hurt, you always have fun, and if you get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends.”

here’s a clip of one of my favorite parts of the movie:

sing joyfully, even if it’s off-key

the other day another fp girl told me about the LA Ladies Choir, her current obsession.  i had never heard of them before but i was immediately intrigued.  they are a group of 30 women with careers ranging from music, fashion, art, literature and theater, and they sing covers of old folk songs and wear beautiful vintage dresses. how can you not love that? founding member becky stark (front woman of groups kavender diamond and the trio the living sisters) says the one rule of the choir is to sing joyfully, and she doesn’t care if you sing off-key. the ladies perform at venues around L.A., sometimes joined by flea of the red hot chili peppers, whose wife, model frankie raydar, is a member of the group (and her sister missy modeled in our march catalog!).

Trend Report

The sales have hit the stores and the Fall collections are slowly creeping in, already?! Yup I know!

It’s rather exciting though, I really like it when the transition time in fashion comes around. You can start fresh and experiment with new looks.

This weekend I fondled the runway shows to see what was cooking on the trends department. There’s a couple of key looks happening for Fall but the two that I’m liking the most are the “man up” look and the “Long View” as categorized by style.com

The sound of light weight, slightly oversized silk, satin and chiffon shirts combined with blazers, cardigans, waisted belts and the MUST HAVE for FALL long mesh or chiffon skirts.

Girls are going crazy over the maxi skirts and I’m one of them. They give a very elegant silhouette that I’m somewhat addicted to.

Below are some of the lovely skirts that are available at Free People and the looks the designers are running down the runway.

so i saw these friendship necklaces on honestly…wtf last week and i’ve been thinking about them ever since.  they definitely bring back memories of grade school – although i actually still wear friendship bracelets that i made back in those days. what excited me about this was the idea of making lots of extra long necklaces to layer… and then i got to thinking… what if i tried it in my hair?

all you need to do this is some string – and if you want to make necklaces like the ones above, rope or hemp cord. if you don’t know how to make these, it’s incredibly simple and you can find an excellent tutorial right here.

during my lunch break i drove over to a.c. moore to pick up some string – so many colors to choose from!

P1010013

i got some hemp cord too for when i make the necklaces.

P1010025

these are the colors i’m going with for the hair wrap.

one

i took a small section of hair, wet it and twisted it up, and then just knotted the three strings around it – warning- it might not be easy to take out :)

now use your hair as if its the rope in the tutorial, and start wrapping! use one color at a time, holding the others in with the section of hair until you want to change them up.

another cool idea- wear the necklaces as belts:

the world is in the palm of our hands

post by our store operations intern, cara.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

One of my biggest fears is regret, and I know that if I do not see the world (or as much of it as I can), I will not be satisfied with my life.

I have always been curious; about other cultures, other music, other food, other fashion trends…about everything! Everyday I am anxious to experience new things in new places. I am lucky to have been to Italy with my family several times, along with Greece and Turkey. I have family in various states that have allowed me to go across the country. But I won’t stop now. I plan to see places that some people only dream of. The world is a beautiful creation and I won’t take it for granted while I am here. I am scared of being in unfamiliar place, but that’s the fun of it. Testing your own limits.

Working down at the Navy Yard, with the planes constantly passing over, has made me even more eager to visit a new place.

Where do you want to go before you die?

A new take on MOD

mod2

Whenever I hear the word ‘stripes’ used in the fashion the thought of Mods and Rockers of the late 1950’s early 60’s spring to mind.

Twiggy, The Who, Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol and his Factory are all icons that I associate with this trend.

Stripes are back again but not so 60’s this time around; think subtle, playful, girly stripes that give a pinch of boy, we’re moving away from the bold black and white signature stripe that has been so dominate in the past to a new refreshing, colour palette. Just look at what the designers for Spring Summer 2010 achieved.

Crazy coloured stripes, contrast stripes and stripes worked into knitwear. I think I might be a wee conscious to walk out in the red and blue Marc Jacobs number, However the cute little numbers in our Stripe shop will work just fine for me.
