fp jemma and i caught an early morning flight down to nashville and spent the day there as we waited for two other fp girls to get in. which was totally fine with us because we got to check out the scene downtown and do some shopping :) downtown nashville was one big party because the country music festival is going on this weekend too.

we had to take our picture with elvis real quick before we got away from the crowd downtown and drove over to south 12th street to check out imogene and willie, the store i blogged about the other day that i’ve been wanting to go to. and sure enough, their dog was right there in the window to greet us!

they had some amazing vintage belts.  the guy and girl who were working were extremely nice and told us that the kings of leon come in all the time! after imogene and willie we made the quick drive over to venus and mars, the vintage shop owned by karen elson. this store had a cat sitting on the patio to greet us :)

the store definitely felt like the home of some incredibly fashionable grandmother with racks of vintage dresses and garments in various rooms that are furnished and decorated with antiques. the wooden steps creak as you walk upstairs and there’s even a room with a bathtub overflowing with vintage treasures.

real fp girls – part 1

as mentioned, our may catalog features real girls who work for free people.  this month on the blog we’ll be profiling these lovely ladies and learning more about their life and style… starting with our web merchandiser!

i am inspired daily by the people i surround myself with. i have some very special people in my life, whether they are best friends, family members or work acquaintances, they’re all here for a reason.

i LOVE to travel… the pure, clean, crisp air of the colorado mountains gives me a feeling i can’t describe. a close second would have to be the redwood national forest in california- a magical place for sure! i also love going out to eat and trying new restaurants, and cooking.  i’m just starting to teach myself, so i started a cooking club dinner night with my girlfriends. some of my favorite things are live music, dancing at concerts with friends, pilates, riding my bike and hikes with my new pup… and flipping through fashion mags, which thankfully has become part of my job!  on a typical day off i sleep in with my dog, cat and boyfriend – yes,all in one bed – make banana pancakes and take a walk to the farmer’s market, then maybe stroll around the city with a girlfriend, checking out shops and getting manicures.  then out to see a show with some friends at night or dinner with my boyfriend!

rebecca1

i love lots of kinds of music – everything  from biggie smalls to hank williams jr.  some of my all-time favorites: the disco biscuits (i have followed them on tour for the past 10 years… so yeah, i guess i like them) phish- they changed my life, grateful dead, pink floyd, radiohead, muse, zeppelin, the doors, jay z, beck, nirvana…

and some newer favorites: phoenix, gorillaz, MGMT, hot chip, passion pit

my style…

all about atlanta

with parents like john taylor (duran duran’s bass player) and amanda de cadenet (photographer who currently dates nick valensi of the strokes) it would be impossible for atlanta de cadenet to NOT be cool, but she’s making a name for herself on her own with her funky style and party-going lifestyle.  atlanta is all over fashion blogs and the cobrasnake and its easy to see why-  her magnetic personality comes across in every photo of her.  this is a girl who is comfortable in her own skin, knows how to let loose and isn’t afraid to show her quirky side – a real free spirit.

whether she’s wearing girly florals and crochet or boyish tees and mixed prints, she always looks amazing and like she’s having the time of her life!

A festival wrap up

blog152sized

It’s been 1 week since we’ve been back from Coachella and I am having massive withdrawal symptoms.  I’ve been shifting through my pictures and reminiscing almost every day.

One thing’s for sure the music was insane and fueled a lot of inspirational thought, from fashion to feeling.

These are some bands I am aspiring to at the moment. Individualism makes me tick and these guys sure have it.

Coachella has been a blast for us and we’re hoping these become a more frequent topic of conversation on the blog. Anyone going to upcoming festivals, we’d love to know?

shooting the morocco catalog

the morocco catalog was shot by photographer dan martensen – he also shot our february catalog – we love him. the team also worked with morocco-based producer fred fantun, who has worked on numerous fashion editorials, and his familiarity with the area saved our team on multiple occasions. one obstacle? the lack of cars- our team had to use three carts to carry all of their shooting equipment, but luckily their porter was awesome and had a huge smile on his face the entire time as he helped them maneuver the narrow streets and alleyways.   our team shot the catalog in several locations, including marrakech, essaouira, the house where they stayed and on the balcony of the villa maroc hotel. they did an amazing job and found some truly beautiful locations for this shoot…next time bring me along, please!?!

homemade granola

i love granola – but it has never occurred to me to try and make my own! i found this recipe on the kitchn and they raved about it, so i think i might try it.  plus granola is a great energy-boosting snack that is perfect to bring along on hikes or other outdoor activities you might be doing on a nice day like today…

ingredients:
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 cups raw pistachios, hulled
1 cup raw pumpkin seeds, hulled
1 cup coconut chips
3/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
3/4 cup chopped dried apricots

fresh berries, for serving (optional).

directions:
1. preheat oven to 300 degrees. in a large bowl, combine oats, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, coconut chips, maple syrup, olive oil, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and cardamom. spread mixture on a rimmed baking sheet in an even layer and bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until golden brown and well toasted.

2. transfer granola to a large bowl and add apricots, tossing to combine. serve with yogurt or fresh fruit, if desired.

*makes about 9 cups.

Clog Mania!

Who would have thought that Clogs could make such an impact on the fashion scene? They are the type of shoe I usually associated with Milkmaids and Amsterdam.

However, Karl Lagerfeld and Alexa Chung have caused a Storm in the market, by making The Clog look super cool. The models at  Chanel’s Spring collection galloped down the runaway in these heavy footed clogs and Alexa has been seen looking mighty fine in them ever since.

We here at Free People fell in Love with them also. With this in mind I thought I would shine a light on the amazing selection we have here on the Free People site (click here). My favorite pair is the Charli Clog that I would wear with distressed boyfriend jeans, high-waisted skirts and pretty floral dresses.  These are definitely the shoe off the summer!

fp loves…sarah lewis

sarah, a long time member of the free people family, used to work with us here at the home office as an accessories designer, but more recently she has launched her own line of jewelry.  she has a shop in philadelphia called adorn, and her work has won several awards and has been featured in juried shows and exhibitions.  we are so excited to welcome her back as a featured jewelry designer!

a lover of nature, sarah was introduced to metalworking and lapidary (the process of taking raw materials like stones, minerals and gemstones and transforming them into decorative items) while living in arizona.  she loves crystals and minerals and creating simple settings that showcase the natural beauty of the stones, as well as combining materials like glass, silver and stones in unique ways. the result is a small-scale wearable sculpture that is earthy and bohemian, but modern and fashionable.  the use of raw, earthy materials, stones, feathers and dream catchers make her jewelry a perfect fit for the natural, free-spirited girl.  sarah appreciates the preciousness of jewelry, and most of her pieces are one-of-a-kind, making them even more special.

sarah also draws inspiration from everything around her and everything she does, including fashion, travel, music, her family and friends – we are inspired by her and all that she has become!

check out sarah’s jewelry featured throughout the march catalog, and on our website.

Fp One

Here’s a bit of insight into one of our Exclusive Brands!!!

Fp One is a very inspiring ‘Gem’ within the Free People community. I chatted with the brains behind the Fp One brand on the phone the other day, about how this label came about and couldn’t help but be slightly overwhelmed by her tales and experiences.

The designer for Fp One has lived in India for 20 years. Whilst visiting, she became intrigued and inspired by how these beautiful Indian workers, worked so effectively from their homes using traditional hand crafted techniques. She found herself joining these workers and getting involved in the process alongside them “ It was very hands on, and became very effective with the design process” She helped them make traditional techniques modern, to create items that now contribute to Free people’s top sellers!

The design details used on the Fp One garments are ideas that came from the design elements in the Free People stores like the Hangers, Curtains, Cushion covers and the mannequins. The designer for Fp One would play around with found fabrics that were easy and accessible to obtain, to create one-of-a kind fashion pieces with amazing character to them. You’ll find that most of the Fp One items are never the same as another in its style group.

With the crinkle items that are doing well for us at the moment a technique is used that has been inhabited by the Indian workers for over 100 years, it’s a traditional technique made effective.

When the Fp One designer finds fabrics that are great she likes to push them to the best of their ability. Say for instance the Muslin Voile fabric that is used for the shopper bag in stores – it is also used for the ‘ends in sequins dress’ and the ‘petticoat dress’ featured on the front cover of the March Catalog – yep the same fabric can you believe it.

fponenew1

The Fp one items have a huge exclusivity appeal about them, just like vintage items do. I love how crafted each one is, the raw-ness of them and the delicate nature they have.

They are precious in more ways than one!
