fp loves…eric saeter

i first heard about jewelry designer eric saeter when i spotted one of his rings on another fp girl and i instantly fell in love. now that we’re carrying a couple of his pieces i asked eric some questions about his work and inspiration. what did i learn? that in addition to making rad jewelry- he’s also just a really cool, nice guy.

how long have you been designing jewelry?
i began designing jewelry A/W 08/09. it was something i had always dreamt of doing; one of those ideas that kicks around until the day you say to yourself “so when is better than now?” and you do it. turns out the process is a natural extension of my love and work in the fields of fashion and art.

how did you begin designing jewelry?
frustrated by a lack of decent and/or imaginative men’s rings at the time — that is, rings over size 11 — i decided to do it right and do it myself. it was very inspiring to watch my work travel around the world to be worn by such different people in such wildly different contexts from my own. it was almost like vicarious experience. now i’m addicted!

can you briefly explain the casting process/how you make your pieces?
the process begins with an intuition for translating ideas to wearable shapes. i find that direct approach (grab a knife, start hackin!) facilitates better final product — where sketching and planning can hinder my creativity. i “invest” my model in a high-temperature plaster and heat it to temps into the thousands to burn out a cavity that is eventually replaced by silver or gold. i use both vacuum casting and centrifugal casting which suck or throw metal into the cavity, respectively. it takes a good day (or longer) to complete all of the steps of the casting process, and each step demands a precision i never had anticipated.

where do you draw inspiration for your work?
surrealism in cinema, in art, in literature. high fashion, penrose and aperiodic tiling, arabesques, rainforests, science, rococo. i come up with some designs as a symbol to supplant the lack of a place or feeling too distant or too difficult to immediately experience; a deep cave, a dream, the rainforest, historical events, a ritual. i want to extend people into these places with symbols that attach them to imagined spaces.

who are your heroes?
jean-luc godard, yves st laurent, vladamir nobokov, karl lagerfeld, gabriel garcia marquez, abdul mati klarwein, augustin lesage. there’s a revolving cast.

if you weren’t a designer, what would you do?
i would probably be painting and drawing more, as well as scavenging creative people to conceive fashion editorials with (for a long time i was photographing models). i would probably also still be modeling to fund my creative projects.

what are your favorite hobbies?
i like making things with my hands, drawing, finding fresh art and media. i love communicating with imaginative people, the further from reality the better. traveling is such a liberating activity that i wish i could say i did enough of. maybe i will try harder this year to do that. after all i never feel more at home than when i am a long way from familiar paths.

if you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want with you?
one: a ring by yours truly — you never know when an un-contacted tribe could appear and eat you. leading researchers in this field suggest that my jewelry effortlessly implies one may be of heavenly origin. two: an awesome hand-crank wheatgrass machine. three: a seed bank. is that cheating? from there i could grow stuff to look at, grow stuff to chomp, and grow building materials also! bamboo viaduct! hello!?!?

the above images are from eric’s blog and tumblr, where he posts lots of really great inspirational stuff along with images of his work. and check out his mountain gold necklace and pyramids ring on our website!

rest in peace.

My heart sank this morning when i logged on to The Guardian to check on the local news back home in England.
Alexander McQueen had Passed away, I couldn’t help but grieve.

He has been a maverick to the English Fashion Scene and an Iconic one at that. With a label such as “The Bad Boy” which came from his invention of the ‘Bumster’ in the 90’s. This Designer was out there to make a statement and that he managed to do every season.

Everyone warmed to him and his cheeky, daring attitude to Fashion.

I admired him for years and he was often an Inspiration to me when i was studying Fashion/Textile Design.

His Spring/Summer 2010 collection blew me away- It was Fashion/Art at its best!

I will miss you Mr McQueen!!!

bonnarooooooo

this year’s bonnaroo lineup is being announced today…starting at noon today, they began revealing one artist at a time every 5 minutes on their myspace page.  pretty annoying actually…anyway it is going on right now if you want to check it out here.  so far, among the performers they’ve announced are the avett brothers, weezer, phoenix, the xx, ok go, jay z, theivery corporation, jimmy cliff and the flaming lips performing “dark side of the moon” with stardeath and white dwarfs.

i know it’s not over yet but i’ll admit, with the exception of jimmy cliff (which is rad), i’m a little disappointed.  maybe because i was at the second bonnaroo when the headliners were neil young, widespread panic and the dead.  it seems like each year it gets a little more mainstream.  what do you guys think?

on a more positive note, i love this photo shoot by dan martensen that was taken at bonnaroo ’08 (i was there that year, too)! as i mentioned yesterday, martensen shot our new february catalog, and our team was very inspired by this photo shoot – i can see why!

february catalog drops tomorrow!

the theme for the catalog is “raw,” heavily inspired by nature – flowers, feathers, shells and raw materials, as well as lace, crochet and fringe.  the above beach shots were very inspirational, as well as the photographer dan martensen’s past shoots at the bonnaroo festival and with fashion muse erin wasson.

i think the end result is lovely!

A Girl we much LOVE

Isabel Lucas is a girl I admire so much. I love her relaxed approach to fashion, she never looks boring. I find there’s always little touches to her outfits that intrigues me whether it’s a floral scarf, a little pinch of embroidery or a wicked vintage T. She knows how to use fashion to create a style that works for her personality and comfort zone. Above all, she has a great heart. She’s an active volunteer for so many charities that it’s hard to keep track of her. One of her most recent being Sea Shephard.

She’s my favorite muse, I heart her!

why prague?

as you now know, our january catalog was shot in prague…but why?

our team chose the location because it is bohemia. the term bohemian gets mentioned quite often in fashion, and it is definitely a huge influence on the free people aesthetic. but did you know that it refers to the untraditional lifestyle of writers, artists and musicians who came to europe by way of bohemia, the area now known as the czech republic? our team also liked the idea of going to prague because it is a fairytale city untouched by wars. not to mention, both the photographer (david mushegain, who also shot our december book) and our creative director both lived in prague at earlier points in their lives, so they are familiar with the city.

kassia meador

how awesome are these photos by kassia meador? they are part of a show opening today in los angeles called “put your finger on the button,” comprised of all female photographers.   if you’re not familiar with kassia, in addition to being skilled with a camera, she’s also a professional surfer…and she was cool enough to answer some questions for the blog!

read on to learn more about how she got started with photography, and check out some of the brand new photos she sent me below.

how long have you been interested in photography?
i’ve been traveling the world as a professional surfer since i was 17. my family always wanted to see where i was going and what i was up to so i’d shoot photos along the way. when i was 20 i got a super bad injury that kept me out of the water for almost a full year. during that time i took some online photo classes to just learn a bit more. since then i have been shooting more and more. it wasnt ’till last year when a good friend and mentor thomas campbell saw a few of my photos and was like “yo you should show people some of your work.” he helped me edit some images and i was invited to show some work in japan for their greenroom festival. since then i have had a few shows in california and nyc. i just recently shot my first fashion story for foam magazine and am planning a shoot for their next issue. super jazzed to be shooting as much as possible and excited to see where it all goes…”

is photography more of a hobby for you or do you see it becoming a profession as well?
“it is something i love to do just like surfing. but surfing not only was my first love it also became my profession. photography is a bit like that for me as well…i really love it and am so passionate about making images that make people feel something. i’m working on shooting lil fashion stories now and i’m really into it so we’ll see where it leads.”

what inspires you on a daily basis?
“my friends, family, environment and traveling.”

who are your heroes?
“i got a lot of heroes. but some people who are super inspirational to me on a photography level are thomas campbell, david mushegain, michael halsband, and ellen von unwerth”

(we love david mushegain too! he shot our december catalog – check out our post on him here.)

and now, check out these incredible photos kassia shot on new year’s morning.  the project is titled “MARS…A NEW DAY A NEW DAWN,” which she describes it as “just a fresh perspective on a new year and all that lies ahead”

the items that i picked are mostly accessories because fp has beautiful vintage inspired items that complement my clothes. my favorite item i picked is the beaded wings cardigan. i think the beads are a lovely touch!

here’s a peak at some of the items on her wishlist!

congratulations marydea!

book club update!

as i’m nearing the end of on the road i was inspired to take a look at the fashion of the beat generation.  beatniks were characterized by their rebellious spirit and anti-establishment, anti-materialistic philosophy, and they expressed this through stark and simple fashion.  jack kerouac and his crew wore old, ripped jeans and t-shirts because they didn’t care how they looked, while others wore head-to-toe black with berets or glasses.

what else about the beat generation’s style and culture is still resonant with you today?

share your thoughts in the comments section!  also for those of you reading on the road, try and finish by january 4th if you can, and check the blog for a final post about the book!

dallas shaw

dallas shaw is a delaware-based artist who’s work ranges from acrylic and watercolor paintings to notecards and tee-shirts. she also happens to be a big fan of free people! dallas was kind enough to answer a couple of questions for me and picked out some illustrations that she feels are representative of free people.

when and why did you decide you wanted to be a professional artist?

oddly enough i knew i wanted to be in art in some way when i was very young. i wrote a letter to the head animator of walt disney world when i was in 6th grade and asked him for a job! i think i was a little too young, but i worked at it since grade school, kept drawing, majored in illustration… as i grew older i really began to love the fashion industry and wanted to work in fashion but the right opportunity hasn’t come up just yet so here i am!

i read that you’re inspired by fashion and music…what designers and musicians are your personal favorites?
i do listen to music when i paint but i am really heavily influenced by the fashion industry. my personal favorites change by season but i am currently crushing on collections by phillip lim, lanvin & peter som.

what do you like to do when you’re not drawing and painting?
i don’t have a lot of free time on my hands this year. if i do end up with a few extra hours during the week i try to make time to spend with my really supportive husband. if I’m not with him during those couple of hours you’ll find me shopping!
