Sun Airway Sits Down For A Post Pitchfork Chat

July 26th, 2011 / Posted by fp jemma / Permalink

While we were at pitchfork festival we were lucky enough to meet Sun Airway the bliss pop band from right here in Philadelphia at Schubas Bar where they played an amazing set for an after show gig. Their sweet lyrics and blippy, bloopy sound get me every time. They leave vapor trials after their mind blowing live performances; their sound is unique and unexpected.

The October 2010 release album Nocturne… is a strange beast. It’s doesn’t feel obsessed with nostalgia but some story lines they use send shivers down my spine like a chill wave can, but then some of its cues leave you with an unexpected attitude that makes you grasp for more. If you haven’t already listened to these guys you should!

We caught up with the ever so lovely guys, front man Jon Barthmus lets us in on what’s next, their highlights and how they rock their fashion style.

what direction are you taking your sound?

i’m still partially looking for more future direction, but i definitely want to have a heavily orchestrated sound, songs with a lot of strings, but i’m also trying to kind of simplify the palette that i’m using this time around… for the last record it was, anything goes type of thing. this time around i’m going to try and exclude certain things. that’s only the kind of basic frame work i have right now.

what inspires you on a daily basis?

it’s hard to say… a little bit of everything i guess, i always take a lot from really good movies and books, things like that. usually i have to be open minded in looking for inspiration. i feel like it’s been turned off a lot lately.

How would you describe you fashion style?

fashion style (laughs) pretty classic, there’s a lot of plaid. there are only 4 different kinds of shirts we can wear – plaid button down, stripy tee shirts, oxford button down or a polo shirt like this. We like to stick with basics, we don’t get too crazy.

what have been your highlights this year?

pitchfork will definitely be a highlight and recording “yours truly” was pretty fun too. the church show in philly was the ultimate highlight for us, we played in the sanctuary on june the 3rd and had the whole thing mapped out with crazy lighting, it was pretty great.

how would you describe sun airway in 3 words?

what was that tee we saw? Oh, um… “Better than before” boom.

here’s some other photos from the bands we loved at Pitchfork!

If one had enough time and money it would be possible to follow the summer around the world, making it endless.

This thought inspired the film Endless Summer and has inspired countless travelers and surfers and adventures. But what if summer isn’t something tangible, defined by weather, fashion, location or anything else? It can be a feeling, an emotion, that you carry with you all year long. Freedom, purity, childlike innocence, serenity… all words I associate with summer, that I try to remind myself of in the dark days of winter. Wrap yourself in cozy, light sweaters and layers that still carry the scent of sunblock and close your eyes, imagine you are listening to the sound of waves crashing on sand and hold on to summer as long as you can.

FP Spun Houston Style

Check out these amazing photos from our Houston Galleria store girls, showcasing the FP Spun line! The photos were taken by Houston Galleria’s senior store manager of the assistant manager, and they did such a beautiful job! The photos really draw attention to the delicate details of the Spun pieces and the model looks gorgeous :)

I love to see the shots of the people that wear free people everyday. Now, if you could just get these people to actually help you when you go into the store, that would be great. I’ve shopped both locations in Houston, and both times not ONE associate actually acknowledged me and offered to help in any way. Such a contrast to the spirit of free people……. Just sayin… Show some love ladies!

Free People Book Club: Jitterbug Perfume, Part 1

July 25th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

At the start of Jitterbug Perfume, on the page in between the dedication and the start of the saga, the author included four quotes. These quotes seem strange in proximity with each other, but they tell you a great deal about the journey you are about to embark on and I felt the need to include them here.

1 158575580julia Free People Book Club: Jitterbug Perfume, Part 1

“The distinctive human problem from time immemorial has been the need to spiritualize human life, to lift it onto a special immortal plane, beyond the cycles of life and death that characterize all other organisms.”

– Ernest Becker

“The history of civilization is the story of man’s emancipation from a lot that was harsh, brutish, and short. every step of that upward climb to a sophisticated way of life has been paralleled by a corresponding advance in the art of perfumery.”

– Eric Maple

“Rage, rage against the dying of the light”

– Dylan Thomas

“(And) always smell as nice as possible.”

– Lynda Barry

This tale takes place in four “locations” – or points in time, I should say.  Present-day Seattle, New Orleans, Paris, and ancient Bohemia – and follows the characters in each of these places as their lives eventually converge.

It begins in ancient Bohemia, where a king named Alobar longs to escape his fate, which is that upon the growth of his first gray hair – a symbol of aging – he will be killed and replaced.

“In those days the Earth was still flat, and people dreamed often of falling over edges.”

“Upon those travelers who make their way without maps or guides, there breaks a wave of exhilaration with each unexpected change of plans.”

penebranca2 Free People Book Club: Jitterbug Perfume, Part 1

“The sky was a velvety black paw pressing on the white landscape with a feline delicacy, stars flying like sparks from its fur.”

“The eclipse…it was probably the most real thing I’ve ever seen, but it was also like a dream. You know what I mean? Real and unreal, beautiful and strange, like a dream.  It got me high as a kite, but it didn’t last long enough. It ended too soon and left nothing behind.”

tumblr ljj1n5byOo1qguhg1o1 500 Free People Book Club: Jitterbug Perfume, Part 1

“Bones are patient. Bones never tire nor do they run away… Water is like flesh. Water will not stand still.  It is always off to somewhere else; restless, talkative, and curious.  Even water in a covered jar will disappear in time.  Flesh is water. Stones are like bones.  Satisfied. Patient. Dependable.”

tumblr loj7iyGf9M1qjbnsxo1 1280p Free People Book Club: Jitterbug Perfume, Part 1

“Perhaps the most terrible (or wonderful) thing that can happen to an imaginative youth, aside from the curse (or blessing) of imagination itself, is to be exposed without preparation to the life outside his or her own sphere – the sudden revelation that there is a there out there.”

From our Catalog Team: Shooting in NYC

July 25th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Our catalog team sent along some more photos to give you guys a little peek at what they’ve been up to! Enjoy :)

From our Catalog Team: Shooting in NYC

We arrived in New York City on the 19th and had a nice bonding dinner to start the shoot off right at Frankie’s on the Lower East Side. We stayed at The Bowery – the rooms are beautiful and some have lovely private terraces. We got up early the next morning and headed to Splashlight Studios where we were shooting with one of our favorite photographers, Guy Aroch, and model Julia Stegner. She is very beautiful and even more so behind the lens! I love the 60’s Marianne Faithfull vibe she brings to the table and felt really inspired by it. During the shoot we listened to Carly Simon and munched on Sushi. It was a fun shoot and the perfect time to be in NYC – while there was a stifling heat wave in Philly, New York had a cool breeze circulating the summer air. It was a great shoot, we are all very proud of it and can’t wait for everyone to see!

Although I like the catalogs where there is an actual place you go, like the Hawaii catalog, or the Texas catalog, as opposed to the studio shoots, I am looking forward to seeing the boho style you have set up for fall in the August catalog. The model is too cute! I love the first picture of her. She has such a relaxed, laid-back, casual style, and I love her shorts! The place you guys stayed with the terraces is not too bed, either! xoxo
