i'm home sick today :( ...but i made this playlist of songs that feel very november-ish (or have november in the title) and listening to it is making me feel a little bit better...hope you enjoy it!
i was in nyc this weekend and my friend/go-to for new music introduced me to lykke li. she exudes creativity and beauty. so far, "little bit" is my favorite song. hope you enjoy her as much as i do...
that's right...it's girls on film on music, halloween edition! here are some creepy cuts selected by bunny and monkey (a.k.a. the girls of girls on film on music).

the rolling stones - some girls
easy dress up option for men – be a girl. problem being that even men as pretty as mick make seriously unattractive women…
bananarama - the greatest hits collection
blonde, brunette and redhead - a pick n’ mix for three ladies in need of a group costume pronto. and then you get to walk around and tell everyone you’re being “banaaaah-nah-raaaah-mah”.
kate bush - never forever
this album is kate at her best, both in terms of her songs ("babooshka", "army dreamer") and cover art…one musician on this album is credited with playing the harmonica, mandolin, balalaika, sitar, koto, banshee, saw, mando and delius. i have the feeling the “banshee” is the official instrument of hallowe’en…
steve martin - a wild and crazy guy
A SUIT AND BUNNY EARS. a man on the same page as me when it comes to his sartorial approach. and i do mean just every day.
bobby "boris" pickett - monster mash
thriller may be the current “grave yard smash” but i’ve always has a certain affinity for this one. and don’t be surprised if at the holidays i’m suggesting you pick up "monsters' holiday”...
misfits - walk amoung us*
anything by the misfits on halloween is prime, but i think danzig really knocked it out of the park on this one, zombies, martians, checking with your mom if it's ok to kill tonight, perfect!
various artists - luxury condos coming to your neighborhood soon
though it never received the attention of athens or seattle, hoboken was one of major players in the '80s indie scene, and the evanescent coyote records helped document this scene with this 1986 compilation. how is this halloween you ask? “elvis, what happened? what happened was you died” lyrics from the mr. bonus song “elvis, what happened?” proving that if you look, anything can me spooky.
the rocky horror picture show soundtrack
i’ll be magenta, and you can be columbia (in the confetti sequin tunic, perhaps?)
*i would have picked “halloween” but for all intensive purposes, it’s only a single
devendra banhart – what will we be

what will we be is devendra banhart’s seventh studio album, but it is his first major label release, and has drawn mixed reviews from critics and fans who were expecting more of the raw, bohemian weirdness that banhart is known for. the overall sound of what will we be has a clarity unlike his previous albums and the vocals are smooth and relaxed, but the freak-folk moments and international influences are still there. the album starts out strong - the first few songs are like a breath of fresh air and the first single, “baby”, is addicting. “rats” is unexpected but interesting, starting out slow and then rocking out like a zeppelin tune…but for me, towards the end, the album sort of lost its excitement.

listen to the album here and let me know if you agree or disagree!
after 42 years of sports and musical history, this week the beloved philly venue will host its final concerts before being torn down early next year. pearl jam will play tuesday, wednesday, friday and saturday night, and rumors are swirling about possible guest appearances on the final night. the spectrum is known amongst performers for its excellent acoustics, and some of the most legendary musical acts of the '60s and '70s have played there- including led zeppelin, the doors, jimi hendrix, pink floyd, the who, eric clapton, bob dylan, neil young, the beach boys, frank sinatra, the jackson five, elvis, the band and bob marley and the wailers. the grateful dead played there 53 times, more than any other musical act.
i’ll be attending all four shows this week and will be sure to report back on the blog!
here are some of the greats who played the spectrum...

jimi hendrix concert poster...check out those ticket prices!

so long, spectrum...you will be missed.
anyone going to any good shows this weekend? there are quite a few going on in philly…

on saturday night i’m going to see local band dr. dog at the tla. i’ve seen them live before and they’re a ton of fun, plus i looooved their latest album, fate. it's sort of folky, sort of poppy, sort of awesome. listen to some tracks on their myspace page…i recommend “the breeze”…

i hope the stage set-up looks like it does in these pics from their show at the fillmore in san fran.
if i’m able to get any good photos i’ll share them on the blog!
the 23rd annual bridge school benefit concert, organized by neil young and his wife pegi, is taking place this saturday and sunday at the shoreline amphitheatre in mountain view california. neil young is the man...if you don't believe me, watch this video.
benefits from the concert go towards the bridge school, a non-profit organization that helps children with severe speech and physical impairments. for more about the bridge school and the concert click here.

the 2009 cmj music marathon and film festival starts today in new york city. cmj spans five days and showcases hundreds of new acts playing small shows at a variety of venues in the city. highlights include atlas sound, who we posted about earlier today, playing two shows (tonight and tomorrow night), and the very best, playing tomorrow night. for a full list of bands, venues and showtimes click here.

also if you haven’t heard of the very best, check out their song warm heart of africa featuring ezra koenig of vampire weekend…i dig it.
you can listen to it on their myspace page here.
if you're going to any cmj shows tell us how they are and send pics!
time for this week's new music review...

atlas sound - logos
atlas sound is the solo project of bradford cox, the lead singer of deerhunter (whose album microcastle was one of my favorites of 2008). with atlas sound, he is able to be more experimental than he is with the full band, blending ambience, airy electronics and soft, warm lyrics. you can hear the influence of 60s pop and doo-wop in the undertones of songs like "walkabout", "my halo" and "shelia", which when compared to the dreary melancholy of most of cox’s music, sound just like a crisp sunny day. "walkabout" is a collaboration with noah lennox (a.k.a. panda bear/member of animal collective), who also rocks. check out this cute video set to the song.
atlas sound is touring now, so check out the tour dates on myspace to see if he's coming to a town near you.
the above image is from the deerhunter/atlas sound blog.
those of you in the san francisco bay area this weekend should check out the treasure island music festival, taking place saturday and sunday. the annual festival typically chooses a lineup of dance-friendly acts for saturday and more low-key acoustic acts to mellow out to on sunday. this year, saturday will feature mgmt, girl talk and passion pit, among others, while sunday has a killer lineup including the flaming lips, grizzly bear, yo la tengo, vetiver and edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros.

not to mention, the scenery is breathtaking.

if any of you go, let us know how it is and send pictures!
more picks (and pics) from our very own musical experts!

rhythm to the madness - weltschmerz
got this at an amazing record store down the street from our free people chicago store, reckless records (www.reckless.com). if you're in the mood to start your record collection, they give the best recommendations right on the record, so you don’t have to worry about looking like a dork when you just like the album cover. anyway, this album is rad and features members from rise & fall and justice. rttm's appearance at the justice release party got kids wanting more than just a cameo, so they put out this album (as if it were that easy...), which has some of the most kickin’ guitar solos around.
bibio - hand cranked
first, forget that you’ve heard stephen wilkinson’s, aka bibio's, music in commercials for l.l.bean and toyota. now get ready to dance because this album is KILLER.
lily allen - it’s not me, it’s you
brit pop brat maybe, but that doesn't stop this record from being really good. like, REALLY good.
owen/ the rutabaga - split ep
so this isn’t really new (was re-released 2004), but it’s new to me. owen is the solo project of mike kinsella who also led the band american football, and played in the bands cap'n jazz, joan of arc and owls. the rutabaga is the one man show of joshua wayne hensley. normally a split has a good side and a bad side, but not this one – the sum is definitely greater than the parts.
loudon wainwright III - attempted moustache
loudon knows how to mix the bitter and the sweet. it includes a favorite: swimming song – “salt my wounds, chlorine my eyes, i’m a self destructive fool”. swoon.
madness - one step beyond
one step beyond is all good times. we highly recommend putting this on at a party just as people have lost the momentum – you’re going to have a throng of dancing in your living room before you know it.
leadbelly - huddie ledbetter’s best…
as much as I hate to recommend a compilation, leadbelly is a true legend and there’s no better way to cover the breadth of his work. known for his 12-string guitar, these classic songs are different when touched by his wicked trifecta of talent, heart and soul.
yves montand – aimez-vous yves?
side one is for putting on a frock and pouring yourself a café latte, side two is to talk in your most outrageous french accent and go off to live la rive gauche.
listen to some tunes from these albums here.
check out the fall 2009 playlist that is now up on fp radio...enjoy!
welcome to another new feature on the fp blog! each week we will review a new album coming out that we think you all might enjoy. this week…brooklyn band grooms with rejoicer.

grooms (formerly known as muggabears) is a trio consisting of emily ambruso, travis johnson and jim sykes. grooms might be another indie band based out of brooklyn but they differentiate themselves with their ability to create soundscapes that alternate between noise-pop and clean, smooth guitar and vocals. this unpredictability makes rejoicer an interesting album to listen to, and it's sure to make for a great live show as well. rejoicer officially comes out on october 20 but is available starting today on itunes. you can listen to some songs from the new album on their myspace page, here.

psst…If you live in new york, you can catch grooms at the knitting factory in brooklyn on thursday night for the rejoicer album release party, and they’re also playing a few shows during next week’s cmj festival (check out the full cmj schedule here).
a few weeks ago, i shared my love of the cure from way back when...
well, a couple of you emailed me with your faves...here's a sampling. i love all these guys (and gals) too!
guns and roses

nirvana

pearl jam

pink floyd

sonic youth

babes in toyland

we've compiled a mixtape playlist of fall-ish songs for all to enjoy!!
in high school, my favorite band was the cure. i would have DIED for robert smith and simon gallup...

who is/was your fave band when you were in school? send me a picture...cyotter@freepeople.com.
:)
another installment from our very own go-to girls about awesome tunes...

kurt vile – god is saying this to you
this comes under the intimidating genre “psych folk” but really it’s just dreamy guitar loops with dylan-esque charm. and here’s a fact for you – that’s kurt vile’s dad on the cover of this album.
brendan benson – my old familiar friend
have a listen to “tiny spark” and tell me you didn’t do a little jig in your chair.
crystal stilts – crystal stilts
the lo-fi sound and super 8 videos have this brooklyn-based group posed as kings of hipster cool, but in a good way.
tune yards – bird brains
ok, there had to be some serious restraint not to totally gush about this band, this album, and in particular this vinyl. it’s not for everyone, but it will definitely make you sit up and listen.
blondie - parallel lines
though this is the band’s third album, it is their most popular by far. it’s the perfect getting-ready, singing-in-the-hairbrush record.
the blasters - the blasters
once a fixture on the LA punk scene, they can now be heard playing in the background of episodes of true blood. they are a complete dichotomy: LA punks with a heart in the bayou. and come on, they toured with queen!
clash - combat rock
last clash album with its’ original line up, combat rock has the band flirting with rap, funk, and reggae, and it even has a cameo by poet allen ginsberg. plus, MIA’s “paper planes” main riff is sampled from the song "straight to hell".
ella fitzgerald - sings the cole porter song book
this is the first album in ella's song book series, and the best rainy sunday music that ever existed. *fun fact – it’s one of only 50 recordings chosen by the Library of Congress to be in the National Recording Registry*.
click here for a sampling of the above...enjoy!
this video from the band girls is awesome...
NOTE: the f word is used a few times in this song...if you're offended by this word, maybe you might want to wait for the next post. :)

folk fans will unite as amoeba music presents a special screening of "leonard cohen: live at the isle of wight festival 1970". the concert film captures the iconic cohen at his commercial peak in 1970 as he performs his bittersweet ballads to a packed crowd of starry-eyed hippies and fans at the isle of wight festival--a coachella of the 70's, if you will...the dvd won't be released until next month, and this screening is free and open to the public.

(i love the name so much!!!!)
fp girls merrie and sarah review a few albums for your listening pleasure, and take real cute photos of 'em, to boot.

1. discovery, LP – it’s a shame you can’t see how colorful this album
cover is here, but good news is the songs are in no way dull. this is rich,
synthy pop that merits an aHa-style video.
2. dum dum girls, self-titled – california lo-fi is becoming way more
prominent and the dum dum girls make this is a seriously good thing. tell
me you don’t shimmy a little during "ship of love."
3. dead weather, horehound – this year has seen the emergence of many a
super-group, but dead weather may be the leader…with jack white
compositions and alison mosshart attitude, horehound is like a soundtrack for
a movie that hasn’t been written yet.
4. cotton jones, paranoid cocoon –– the cover for this album is a COLLAGE
I TELL YOU! someone out there has amazing elmer’s glue fingers, which is
ok, because cotton jones is very very good inspiration for being laid back
and still for a little while. RELAX ALREADY.
5. hawaii calls – the summer is almost over but these songs always make the
sun come out.
6. george michael, faith – the supermodels of the ‘90s are making a major
comeback right now and this is the soundtrack to celebrate. FASHION WEEK
HERE WE COME!
7. george harrison, all things must pass – george looks like King of the
Countryside on this album cover, sat on his tree stump throne, and this
four-album set is equally regal.
8. sam cooke, the best of sam cooke – there’s something about these songs
that are both completely of their day but fresh-sounding anyway. the right
kind of stuff for the start of fall when you’re just waiting for someone to
light the first bonfire.
and then, you can listen to the music, too!!!! except we couldn't link up to the dum dum girls, so you have to check out their myspace.
this video is so stinkin cute...i need to know more about this sam amidon.
this is dark circles. it's briana's band, with help sometimes from her sister mikele. and kyle and anthony. they are pretty incredible with a hint of creepy. and are playing at johnny brenda's in philly on the 15th...with sian alice group and the war on drugs. please go and see them before they become wildly famous.

at the bowery ballroom.
and, funnily enough, they're on the same record label as bon iver, who we just posted about today.
you know julie, the call center supervisor who was just profiled here yesterday...
well, she was kind enough to write up a little something about one of her favorite musicians, bon iver...
read on, and enjoy.

"Like a quick shot of brandy warming your belly on a cold winter day, Bon Iver sparks a fire in the pit of your stomach and works his way out. His music is layered and reflective, his story-telling frank and selfless. I first found out about him when reading about “Blood Bank”, his latest EP. It was recorded in a remote cabin in Wisconsin, Iver’s home state. The EP is a follow-up to his full length, “For Emma, Forever Ago” which was released in 2008 to much acclaim. Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) is building momentum in the US indie charts thanks to a rigorous tour schedule and rave reviews from respected critics.
His music evokes the crisp winter air along with the silence you encounter when you step outside after a brutal snowstorm. He is a single snow flake falling from a white sky, a single voice touching your soul. I encourage everyone to take a listen to Blood Bank and let it captivate you as it did me."
If you're in NYC and looking for something fun and free to do tonight, check out the Alberta Cross show in Brooklyn! It's taking place at Brooklyn Bowl at 8pm, and they are playing with another cool band, Phonograph, so it should be a great show! And free! You can't beat that!

Give our newest store playlist a spin! It's really upbeat and fun! Enjoy!

You might recall a while back when I posted the video for Oscar Wilde by Company of Thieves. We got such a fabulous response from you all! We were psyched that you guys are into Company of Thieves too - so when we were able to catch the lovely lead singer Genevieve Schatz for a quick chat before their appearance in Indianapolis, we went nuts!
Meredith (who works for FP) and Genevieve talked about the band's new album, Ordinary Riches, fashion, traveling, and peanut butter! And, as if that weren't enough, we are pumped to announce that the band are going to do an intimate acoustic set in our We The Free store in Brooklyn this very Saturday at 5pm! Don't miss it!
Until then, check out the interview below!
So how is the tour going?
Actually we just got home from a west coast run. We are about to leave in a few days for about a month and a half (tour) so I hope it's going to be fabulous!
Did you have a very steady tour schedule so far this year?
Definitely. We left at the end of January and went out for about two and a half months with Thriving Ivory, came back for about a week. Then we went to the west coast to have our own run of headlining shows and it was just amazing to be out there. I'd never been out to Seattle or Portland or San Diego and places like that. It's been a really wild ride. I've gotten to the point that I'm more comfortable on the road than I am when I come home!
Better with dirty laundry than clean clothes?!
Yeah! You become part of the earth! It's a totally different rhythm that you sink into.
I love the webcasts you did on Youtube from the road! They're so cute and they made me feel like one of your friends, watching you bopping around while you traveled.
Haha! That's awesome! That's the whole point! We want to always include our fans, our friends in what we're doing. We just always want to share it.
Were you happy to share when your van got broken into at SXSW (a music festival)?
Well, it's cool to show all sides of the game because a lot of people are under the impression that, you know, it's always a very glamorous lifestyle. You have your ups and downs just like anything.
Your latest album, Ordinary Riches, is clearly very influenced by Oscar Wilde. Are you often influenced by other arts than music when you write songs?
I always have been. It's something that isn't really sought out for me, I kind of always end up in the middle of... I don't know! A lot of things open my eyes constantly. I've always been very aware and conscious of what's going on around me. It's always been hard for me to keep it out, I always let me fill me up! And so the whole album is really based on personal experiences and also sometimes being in the center of a lot of commotion just by the nature of living in a major city and being in a lot of crowded areas and coming into contact with other people and relating to them and things like that. It's kind of an album about a coming of age.
Have you been writing on the road?
Absolutely! Every day!
Are you getting a different tone with being out of the city and in these new places?
Yes yes! I would say... How do I explain it... It's much darker but much more focused.
The thing I find interesting about this album is the lyrics are fairly dark and introspective but the melodies, though not necessarily "pop", are definitely accessible and often upbeat. I found it weird to find myself happily bopping along to a song and then realize what I'm singing along to.
I think that's something that I've come to really embrace is the fact that, for me, I feel like the painful things in life and the joyful things in life have a lot of similarities and the physical effects of feeling overjoyed or feeling deeply deeply hurt are very similar to me - just the weight of the world. That's kind of what our songs, even our new ones, have that tone where there's a contrast going on with a shared vein.

So what is the dynamic between you and your bandmates on the road?
As far as the three of us go, I feel like Marc (Walloch, guitarist) is the guy who is the problem solver and will just bulldoze through anything and be a soldier. Mike (Ortiz, drummer) is the guy that makes sure everyone keeps calm. He seems impervious to disasters. It's really funny - he has this energy level that's super calm of just "It's all ok. We're going to get through this." And I'm the person who... well everyone jokes that they see the little girl in me all the time. It's because I'm definitely the explorer. I'll be like, "Let's go on this adventure! What's this?! Let's do this thing!" They'll turn around and I'll be climbing a tree or something, shouting "Come here! You guys have to see this!"
What is some of the stuff you've discovered while you've been traveling that's been exciting for you?
Honestly, one of the coolest things was a town in Tennessee called Tallulah. We just wrote a song about it. It was a town that has been almost completely abandoned and every single building, the school house, the post office, the homes and store fronts, were completely left. There were a only a few human beings in the whole town. You know, at first I was really scared and I couldn't believe that this happens. But when I realized that this is what happens when people leave, nature just comes in, I had this glee. When I looked closer there were vines coming up from the earth and wrapping around buildings and taking them back in. It was almost like nature trying to say that nature prevails and things change. I found that comforting.
I'm really excited that you guys are going to be able to do an in-store set for us. But you also recently did a set for another "store" of sorts- Etsy.
Yes! Oh my gosh!
How did that come about?
Well, a few months ago I was talking to the band saying that I feel that we're at a time in this industry where independent arts really does have a huge window of opportunity and there's a lot of presence. I'm really into supporting other independent artists so I was like, why don't I incorporate pieces in my wardrobe that are very personal to people that they've spent a lot of time and put a lot of heart into? That's what I do with my life so I should have a full circle representation of that. I started getting into Etsy because there's a local artist in Chicago that I buy a lot from, dresses that no one in the world has but me and it feels so cool to wear them on stage! So basically we contacted Etsy about it and talked about different things we liked and performed for the creative people on Etsy. It was so cool to be able to do that!
Yeah, Etsy really is a great platform for a marketplace. It's amazing how quickly it's taken off and all the talent on there.
Definitely, and also a lot of unexpected surprises. I found this person who makes these wooden peg figures of casts from Wes Anderson films. It's so hilarious! It's like a child's toy but who would ever have thought that someone would think to spend their time doing that, and it's great that they do and it makes them happy.
Are you a fan of fashion? Do you look out for trend or do you have your own vibe?
I definitely have my own style but I'm a huge fan of fashion! It's obviously a representation of the greater picture of the world that at least can be broken down into personal perspective and I've always loved that. I really believe in expressing yourself through fashion. I do believe it's an art.
And your song was on Gossip Girl...
That was crazy! I didn't get to see the excerpt because I don't really watch television but I heard about it the day it was happening and I was kind of blown away! To start off I didn't know how I felt about it to be honest but it was a very cool opportunity for us to get exposure.
I always think it must be quite surreal the first time you hear yourself on the radio or on TV.
I still haven't heard us on the radio! I hope that if it ever happens it will be like the That Thing You Do moment when we're all screaming and running from different parts of the city and meeting up just as the song ends.
Now I have all my stupid questions...
Crunchy or smooth peanut butter?
Wait what? Oh, crunchy.
Innie or outie?
Hmmmmm... innie?
Pink or black?
Black.
Spots or stripes?
Stripes definitely.
Ocean or country?
Oooooh ocean.
Winter or summer?
Summer!

Wow! What an awesome interview! Thank you Genevieve! And thank you Meredith for your interviewer skills! I couldn't have even imagined a better interview than that!
Check out more from Company of Thieves on their Myspace - and don't miss their in-store appearance, this coming Saturday afternoon at 5pm at We The Free in Brooklyn!
This video is really fun! I've seen these giant pianos for dancing before, but I've sure never seen anyone playing it with such skill! These folks do a little routine and play Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor on it! Sweet!

It's so muggy in Philadelphia today! It is starting to feel very summery outside and for some reason I just have this great song, Walk Don't Run, by The Ventures stuck in my head! I came across this video of them performing the song live in 1960 - I'm pumped! You don't always find clips like these! It's a little blurry at times but the close ups of their faces while performing are so cute! They look nervous!
Anyway, great song, enjoy!
Hooray! Here is our latest store playlist! It's really awesome, I think you'll love it! Enjoy!
P.S. If you have any trouble listening to the embedded playlist, click here to listen to it on Playlist.com.
Check out this super cute new video from Company of Thieves! It's a take on some of the scenes from Rushmore which is fun, and the lead-singer Genevieve is wearing a Free People top for a lot of the video too! Enjoy!
Love! Such a cute video by Coeur de Pirate!
Coeur de Pirate || Comme des enfants from Dare To Care Records on Vimeo.
I really enjoyed this video by Rainbow Arabia, especially for it's colorfulness! It's a fun dancey song too...
Rainbow Arabia "Let Them Dance" Music Video from Jacqueline Castel on Vimeo.
The screenshot below looks pretty unassuming, but I can assure you that those little squares are actually something awesome! The Tone Matrix is a sine wave synthesizer, the key word for us here being sythesizer, as in you make music with it! I can't explain very well how it works or what it does exactly, but if you go play with it you will not be able to stop! Try it! I really think you guys will love this - enjoy!

Have you heard this song Day n Nite by Kid Cudi? I am obsessed! I have been listening to it over and over since this weekend, and the video is totally awesome! Check it out!
Check out our latest playlist - the March playlist for the stores! I hope you'll like it as much as we do! Enjoy!
Happy Friday morning! I hope you'll find this music video for Jemapur's song Maledict Car as mesmerizing as I do! I bet you will...
Thank you all so much for participating in the Lisa Hannigan giveaway!
Your answers about which pages you liked most and your favorite kinds of music were really interesting!
And now for the winners, chosen at random:
Congratulations to Maria!
My goodness. This is a fantastic video.
So many images and favorites!
But I'd have to say my favorite page/part is right about 2:22
Where she's pulling him into the boat.
Congratulations to Alicia!
I like the romantic aspect of it, like the page when the girl comes and saves him from the water and when they're on the island holding hands.
Congratulations to Kelsey!
I love old folk music like James Taylor and Joni Mitchell..
Hooray! And thank you again, to everyone, for participating! We will be doing another giveaway very soon- stay tuned!
Remember this awesome music video by Lisa Hannigan that I posted a while back? The pop-up book is so cool, and the song is really sweet!
Well, I have some fun news! Lisa was so kind as to donate three t-shirts, three packets of adorable buttons, and three copies of her new album, Sea Sew, for me to give away to you! How awesome is that?! The stuff is all very cute too! And who doesn't want a free new album?
So now is the fun part - the giveaway! For your chance to win a Lisa Hannigan t-shirt, album, and some buttons, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post and answer one of the following two questions:
What page in the pop-up book in the music video is your favorite?
or
What type of music is your favorite?
Three comments will be chosen at random, and if your comment is one of those chosen, you win! It's just that easy! Don't forget to include your email address with your comment, so that if you win I can contact you! I will announce the winners tomorrow evening! Yay! Good luck!
P.S. In Philadelphia? Don't miss Lisa's show at the World Cafe on this coming Thursday night! It's an event not to be missed! See all her dates on her site!
I found the original music video for The Beach Boys' song Wouldn't It Be Nice and it makes me so happy, just like the song! It's really cute and it looks like they're having so much fun! The perfect song for a pleasant Saturday...
I love this video for Lisa Hannigan's new song, Lille! I think you guys will too, if not for the song then for the awesome pop up books! Enjoy!
Today I bring you the last of our trio of Valentine's Day playlists, the Valentine's Classics Playlist! Enjoy!
Be sure to check out our Falling in Love playlist and our Breaking Up playlist too!
I have been enjoying this rather strange music video for Animal Collective's song Water Curses very much lately! It's kind of funny how it goes with the song, which is awesome...
Today I bring you the second of our trio of Valentine's Day playlists: the Breaking Up Playlist! Sad as it is, the fact of the matter is that sometimes love stinks, and sometimes we dump or get dumped. So, we asked everyone at Free People to tell us their favorite breaking up songs, and have compiled them into this playlist for you! Don't miss our Falling in Love playlist from earlier this week, also!
Having trouble viewing the playlist? Click here to be whisked away to a page where you can view it!
I really enjoyed this music video by Friendly Fires for their song Skeleton Boy, which is going to be on their new album coming out in a few weeks. It's a happy little song and I love the snowy stuff floating all around and turning them into skeletons! There's a higher quality version on YouTube if you click through, also.

I can't believe Valentine's Day is in just a little more than a week! It seems like New Year's and the inauguration were so recently!
We have put together three different playlists for Valentine's Day, and today I bring you the first: the Falling in Love playlist! We asked everyone in the company to tell us their favorite falling in love songs, and here they are! Enjoy! And click here if you want to see it on Playlist.com!
You can bet this cool music video of Nico's I'm Not Sayin from 1965 made it on my YouTube favorites list! I love it! I bet you will too!
This video by Oren Lavie is so cool! I love it! It's really unique, I think you will enjoy it!
Via All the Good Things.
Give our newest playlist a spin! We think you'll really like it!
We are trying another playlist program, Playlist.com, and so far we really like it a lot! The playlists are for you though, so please tell us what you guys think!
Also, you should check out our Playlist.com profile. You can follow us and our playlists there, kind of like on Twitter!
I recently found this video of Simon & Garfunkel's Cloudy on YouTube. I just love it, it's so relaxing and mellow! I think it's a clip from an old TV show, rather than a music video... I never had seen it before! Enjoy!

This picture completely trips me out! Focus on one spot in the picture and it will stop moving all around. It's the cover from Animal Collective's newest album, Merriweather Post Pavilion. Word is that this album is doing extremely well, which rocks, cause I love Animal Collective! Want to hear a song off the album? Go here to listen to the song My Girls.
Lip Dub Pop Muzik from fredasterical on Vimeo.
You might remember this entry we did about Victorian paper masks one of our designers brought back from the Netherlands. Check out this lip dub video using similar masks from fredasterical! Why didn't we think of this?

See more pics of our design team in those silly masks.

Alissa, one of our wovens designers, showed me this cover of the Miley Cyrus song See You Again by The Mae Shi, and I am so addicted now! The Mae Shi's version is so catchy! The video is really funny too - enjoy!
This video makes me want the beach! I loooove all of the vintage footage and beach dancing chicks. Also love the fashion elements, the heels worn in the ocean, the suspenders with the bikini. Plus the hand drawings, this video has it all.
from Chicks on Speed. JC Report did a little analysis of the evolution of the band, if you're interested...
Like female vocalists? How about a slightly folksy sound and some sweet viola playing? I've been really enjoying Anni Rossi's new album lately, and wanted to share a song of hers with you! It's a pretty simple video, but I just love the song! I bet she would be cool to see live...
Meredith, Free People's Allocator (she helps figure out how many of which styles go to what stores...) and music lover wants to share this Beck video with you! Here's a little note from Meredith:
I found the video through the Creative Review blog, which I think is an amazing resource for keeping up to date on what is going on in the design and advertising world.
Beck has made a number of really fun videos for his latest album, Modern Guilt, one of which (Gamma Ray) features uber-fashionista Chloe Sevigny. Having seen this one though I think my relatives should all be expecting creepy, homemade heads of "David Beckhand", "Short, Beck and Sides" and "Beck to the Future" as gifts this year; I've been inspired!
We have yet another fun holiday diversion for you! I recently went around and asked everyone here at the home office for their favorite holiday or wintertime songs! We have put them together on a playlist for you, which you can access by clicking here. Please note however, that you need to have iTunes installed on your computer to be able to view the playlist. We have been experimenting with different ways to put up playlists for you, so we of course welcome any feedback!
At any rate, check out the playlist! It includes over 30 songs, including this awesome classic sung by Eartha Kitt below...

Come check out the band of one of our accessories designers, Danielle! This Friday night at the Khyber, on 2nd and Market streets in Philadelphia, The Midnight Beat will be playing with Dark Horse & the Carousels and Federale! It starts at 9pm, and looks to be a real good show! Come hang out if you're in town!
As if I didn't already love this song enough, I saw the video for it recently and I am just going crazy over it! See for yourself and enjoy!
Do you believe there's treasures in the ocean? This video by Angus and Julia Stone is so cute. The paper marionettes remind me of our blog header! Have you ever clicked on the curtain tassel? Try it out!

I went around the office today and asked "What is your favorite song right now?"

Natalie Portman + Devendra Banhart + Indian music video = fantastic
I just wanted to give everyone in the Philadelphia area a heads-up about the Art Star Craft Bazaar taking place this Saturday and Sunday at Penn's Landing! It should be a blast, and have tons of awesome stuff! Bands too! Check out more info about it at Art Star's site!

I know lots of people have been asking about what kind of music we all listen to here at Free People. We have put together some playlists on imeem for your listening pleasure. Sign up and be our friends, and listen to our favorite songs by artists like Joni Mitchell, Vampire Weekend and Kate Nash. Listen here...

I spotted an entry about Swedish girl Lykke Li on someone's blog a few weeks ago, and have been seriously obsessed since. So I thought I'd share. You can't get her record in the states (not that I know of anyway) but her myspace has a bunch of songs and you can download a version of "Tonight" from her website.

Here is one more mix CD from the Urban Outfitters Home Office Swap. This was made by Meredith, the Allocation Analyst for the Free People stores! (If you're wondering what that means, Meredith figures out how many units of each size and color of a style get shipped to each store. She analyzes all kinds of info like what was sold the year before, how similar styles are selling currently, etc)
A note from Meredith:
"It's called I'm With Cupid. Geddit...
I was talking with a friend this week with whom I often exchange mix cds and was asked how I usually pick my songs. I think most of the time I pick a song because it's the music that's emotive to me, not necessarily the sentiment. But when it comes to finding songs for Valentines I see-saw the other way around, and each of these songs kind of pull on my heartstrings. One of my favourite things about love songs is how one time you listen to them and think "AH! This is how I feel and isn't so wonderful!" and then a week later return to it thinking "LOVE! THE MISERY!" "

Here is Heather's mix for the Urban Outfitters Home Office Vday mix CD swap. She is the Free People Direct Operations Manager. Message from Heather...
"Here’s my play list for the Valentines CD Exchange. One requirement for inclusion was that all songs had to be “old enough to drink” so all of the tracks are at least 21 years old. (Actually I am only *pretty* sure this is true-so I could get busted by music nerds.) I wanted to include all of my favorite types of music, so I included classic reggae, soul, ska, country, punk etc. The tracks are all related to love in some way, whether it is unrequited love, anti-love, weird horror love, cheeky love, misbegotten love, magical love… etc. etc"

This is Jenny’s mix for the Urban Outfitters Inc. Home Office CD exchange. Jenny works in Wholesale Operations for FP. Here's a little note from Jenny.
“No, no theme. I was originally going to be all dark and bitter so as to have the Valentine's day theme be ironic, but then I figured there was enough irony around Urban Outfitters Inc., so I just picked love-themed favs.
The track I left off was Rufus Wrainwright's "Hallelujah," although I'm still trying to figure out of I could put the Miracles' "You Really Got a Hold on Me" (you might remember this song from early 80's Sesame Street videos where Lionel Ritchie(?) sang it with a Muppet long on arms).
Also, as far as cover art goes, I did a Google image search on the first track and this is what came up. It's from this chick's blog zazazu.wordpress.com So I'll probably do a black and white version, since I have a BW laser printer and am too lazy to find a solution to the color problem. “

Just wanted to show some love for a local philly band and their fp lovin singer. Exreverie is playing a show on February 2nd at the Tin Angel in Philly, to celebrate the release of their new record. Check out their website and myspace...
The creativity exhibited in this music video is awesome. The entire video is animated t-shirt graphics. From French group Justice...
Have you seen this? French musician Camille's video for her song "Ta Douleur". Check out a little blurb from wikipedia...
"This album incorporated an avant-garde concept - a string, or thread ("le fil"), which was a drone that persisted throughout the entire course of the album. All of the songs in this album are based on the exploration of the voice, with only a double bass or double bass and keyboard as accompanying instruments."

Even if you're not a Bjork fan, I'm sure you can appreciate her visual artistic sensibilities. You have to admit, everything she does looks interesting if not beautiful. So showstudio has this activity on their site that I thought was really cool. To celebrate Bjork's new record, Volta, you can download tiles that you can print out at home. Once you have each tile, you can put it together like a puzzle to assemble one large Volta poster. Check it out...
Check out this strange and beautiful video from Bat For Lashes and get an eyeful of Natasha's glamour folk princess-ness.

Refinery 29 currently features Antony (singer of Antony and the Johnsons) in their "hot for" section. Refinery 29 is the BEST New York shopping guide. They map out every great boutique and are on top of every opening of cool new stores. I highly recommend checking out the site before your next shopping romp through NY.
In addition to shopping and fashion, the site features other cultural info, which brings us back to Antony. Their feature reminded me of this amazing video Nick Knight did a while back. ( The above photo is from the film) The video is posted on Nick's fashion broadcasting site SHOWstudio. The video is sooo beautiful and such a simple concept...

A group of girls that work in our two stores near Philly ( King of Prussia and Suburban Square) along with one store employee recently promoted to the home office (congrats!) all went to see the weepies this week. They heard of the singer songwriter team because the home office had sent them the CD to play in their stores! They ended up talking to Deb and Steve (from the weepies) after the show and the girls told them the story of how they all knew each other and how they discovered their music. Deb was excited because she said half of her closet is Free People! It's funny how things get connected...
