Post image for Trend Spotting: coloured jeans

Fashion has gone vibrant when it comes to bottoms particulary skinny jeans, we love the rainbow selection and teaming them with simple tees. They brighten up our day.  A trend that grew from the fall 2011 runway shows and got everyone hooked.

It adds a new kind of fun to that Rock N’ Roll skinny jeans vibe. Are you the type of girl who would wear bright coloured jeans?

i just bought the red skinny crop jeans and am having a great time styling them with everything in my closet! My favorite is my brown lace up bikers and a cut out Lacey cream top with a suede vest!! I could wear these jeans every day with something new mixed in. Also so cute with the striped hooked sweater colored red and tan and my bass lace up oxfords. These jeans fit like a glove on my petite 5'2" 115lb frame(27's as they run small)

I really need to get a pair of colored denim. I'm just afraid I won't wear it as much as regular jeans and I want it to be worth the money!

Post image for Style File: Assistant Stylist

This week’s Style File is one of our adorable styling assistants. All day long she runs around the web studio making sure that looks get shot, that they look good, and that the process moves along in an organized smooth manner. It’s tough work, but she’s always cheery and relaxed. Having moved here from Austin, TX (jealous? I think so), maybe it’s her southern roots that spark this kind of attitude.

Her style on the other hand, does not remind me Austin. It’s much more sophisticated – tailored even – though, it, like her personality, has a touch of kookiness. It’s a pea coat and lady-like dress paired with…knee highs? You half expect it to be prim and proper from head-to-toe, but then she confuses you like that. It’s great! She doesn’t take herself too seriously but she has great taste in sophisticated pieces. Check it out…

Her style is much more sophisticated than Austin's style? Uh, I beg a differ... Austin offers a very unique style, and having lived all over the world, I'd say she carries Austin's trendy style specifically . She does however represent and carry it well, as young as she is. So cheers for that + the earth tones comment.

Post image for Blogger Diary: Once…Pop-Up Preview Event

As many of you should know by now, today is the launch of our much awaited bicoastal NYC & LA pop-up shops. Last night we held a little preview event for friends, bloggers, & media at both locations. I was lucky enough to help organize the whole thing and attend the NYC event. I was working of course, but this is the kind of thing I’ve always dreamt of getting the chance to do. We had RSVP’s from editors I’ve watched creep up masthead ranks, and bloggers who inspire me on the regular. Working for a brand, that my heart is truly invested in, I just couldn’t wait to share it with them. I was nervous though. Was I going to say all of the right things, and forge a connection between Free People and these important figures?

The cupcakes & wine were set. Goodie bags were in place. I smoothed a red coat of confidence across my lips and watched the door as attendees began to trickle in. As soon as I greeted the first to arrive, Claire Geist from Delune Blog, my nerves evaporated. A warm calm of “I got this” washed over me. I was there to represent the brand, but I was also there to just be myself, and had a blast. I cracked jokes with Natalie Suarez and Christina Caradona who apparently has something of a Kanye crush (Kanye – if you’re reading this, I highly suggest dropping the woman a line). I connected with Karen of Wheredidyougetthat over the beauty of individual interpretation in fashion, and specifically the creative freedom that Free People possess to inspire it. She had a calm insightful point of view that stirred up my thoughts – which is exactly the kind of conversation I live for. Lastly, I finally got to meet Erica & Lauren of Honestly…WTF who we’ve worked with before, but I’ve never gotten the chance to meet myself. They’re both intelligent women with such cool energies about them. You can’t help but notice that you’re in the presence of a rare kind of special person when you’re with them.

The gowns looked beautiful and at the end of the night I was content. I loved talking about the brand and getting Free People’s beauty out there. It was a night of meeting new people, partaking in interesting conversations, and celebrating fashion – exactly what I’ve always wanted for my future.

Now somebody pinch me. Nobody gets their dreams this young…

I love the pink skirt and bodice two piece! I would love it for my wedding. Is it still available?
Kimi -Jan 11, 2012, 4:38PM
I LOVE all these dresses; they're works of art, and I'd totally buy one if I could afford!!! They're some of the most beautiful, fun dresses I've ever seen; and I can see the love that went into creating them. If I win the lottery (or can save enough money) I'm totally going buy Kristin's gown! I also think that one would make a perfect wedding dress, and then could be a perfect party dress ever after the wedding. And it's even washable, so could wear it for special occassions for the rest of my life :) PS: I love Free People!!!

Post image for Milan Fashion Week

Milan’s fashion week has come to a close and I’ve been scrolling through the shows for inspiration. It was bright and glitzy, everything that you would expect from a city that enjoys the finest things in life.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Marni, there’s something so incredibly quirky going on with it aesthetics; whether it’s the unique colour palette or the juxtaposition of ad-hoc accessories against geometric prints. In this collection I was seeing a little touch of 60’s housewife which worked in a weird kind of way – that’s what to expect from Consuelo Castiglioni.

Roberto Cavalli’s show brought glitz to my eyes the artisanship won me. The collection seemed like it belonged at the couture shows at times. I loved the contrast of gold with leopard and florals against the black. It was a dream to look at.

Milan shone bright, next stop Paris!

Post image for Office Style

Day by day I’m so impressed by all of the amazing fashion I come across here at the office. Everywhere there are items that make you want to melt. The styling is so fresh. I find myself staring just taking in the aesthetic of it all.

She was a little camera shy, but I had to capture this necklace for you all. How amazing?!

I love how she knotted the dress and wore it with printed boots to give this look a laidback feel.

This crazy mix match of prints is so daring and perfect. I love how the prints have a funky feel yet the look remains retro and feminine overall.

How stylish is this pairing of the ruffle legging with chambray and booties? Picture 004

The Marshal Islands had an army surplus supply store just off to the right of the airport. They sold some really old interesting things there. I did buy a lot ofvery old radios that were used in WWII. The radios were in awesome condition too. Anyone know of any wonderful places to shop for a few old military supplies?

Post image for Fevered Visions

You know that feeling? When you’re sick and your body is invaded – somehow disconnected… one minute you’re sweaty, and the next, shivering. You wait it out trying to get hold, but your head is somewhere in-between dreams and reality.

I’m just getting over being sick. It was a bug that really got a hold of my body and had my head spinning. It feels so good to be getting better – hope you’re all staying healthy!

Post image for Weekend Getaways: Camping

I have this sudden urge to go camping… I think its this time of year, it’s a little bit cooler out and I just want to wander, lose myself among tall trees, write in my journal, and wake up to watch the sun rise.

Post image for Style File: Senior Sweaters Designer

Funky jewelry – check. Little black boots – check. Great floppy hat – check again…

Our senior designer for sweaters here at Free People has a modern day rock star style. She’s a master of textures, and knows how to rock a great sweater outfit (as she should).  Just by looking at her style you can tell she’s an expert.

Although you’ll often find her in sweaters which are soft and cozy, there’s a great grunge quality to the way she dresses.  She’ll mix in tattered pieces and vintage tees while piling on jewelry for that right amount of edge. I especially love the feather earrings that she often wears. Not only are they sweet pieces, but she will only wear one at a time, and it looks awesome.

She has a great tattoo that says “feed the good” above a wolf. The words were inspired by a Native American folktale:

An old Cherokee told his grandson, ‘My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, & ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, & truth.’ The boy thought about it, and asked, ‘Grandfather, which wolf wins?’ The old man quietly replied, ‘The one you feed.’”

Such a good lesson for us all to remember!
