As many of you should know by now, today is the launch of our much awaited bicoastal NYC & LA pop-up shops. Last night we held a little preview event for friends, bloggers, & media at both locations. I was lucky enough to help organize the whole thing and attend the NYC event. I was working of course, but this is the kind of thing I’ve always dreamt of getting the chance to do. We had RSVP’s from editors I’ve watched creep up masthead ranks, and bloggers who inspire me on the regular. Working for a brand, that my heart is truly invested in, I just couldn’t wait to share it with them. I was nervous though. Was I going to say all of the right things, and forge a connection between Free People and these important figures?

The cupcakes & wine were set. Goodie bags were in place. I smoothed a red coat of confidence across my lips and watched the door as attendees began to trickle in. As soon as I greeted the first to arrive, Claire Geist from Delune Blog, my nerves evaporated. A warm calm of “I got this” washed over me. I was there to represent the brand, but I was also there to just be myself, and had a blast. I cracked jokes with Natalie Suarez and Christina Caradona who apparently has something of a Kanye crush (Kanye – if you’re reading this, I highly suggest dropping the woman a line). I connected with Karen of Wheredidyougetthat over the beauty of individual interpretation in fashion, and specifically the creative freedom that Free People possess to inspire it. She had a calm insightful point of view that stirred up my thoughts – which is exactly the kind of conversation I live for. Lastly, I finally got to meet Erica & Lauren of Honestly…WTF who we’ve worked with before, but I’ve never gotten the chance to meet myself. They’re both intelligent women with such cool energies about them. You can’t help but notice that you’re in the presence of a rare kind of special person when you’re with them.

The gowns looked beautiful and at the end of the night I was content. I loved talking about the brand and getting Free People’s beauty out there. It was a night of meeting new people, partaking in interesting conversations, and celebrating fashion – exactly what I’ve always wanted for my future.

Now somebody pinch me. Nobody gets their dreams this young…

It was such an amazing day – we were blown away by the creativity of everyone who came to the event, and it was so great to just sit around a table, talking and crafting for a few hours! One of our crafters, Nicole, blew me away with her style and creativity! She made the following braided hat band, necklace and bracelet. And her rad printed jacket is actually a men’s shirt that she found in Africa – amazing.

One girl used the embroidery thread and tied a bunch of tiny bows that she glued to the inside of the ornament – soooo beautiful.

Blogger Diary: California Dreamin’…

“I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering…”

Sometimes I feel like the thoughts in my head fly around at a frenzied pace and the only way to sort them out is to get away for a bit.  Even if it’s not far away, just to get out of the city, and surround myself with new sights, smells and sounds can do the trick.  This weekend I did actually travel though – I went to California for a quick vacation with my sister to catch up with some family and old friends.

California is one of my favorite places in the world – and while I prefer San Francisco, I do love LA.  We stayed at the Standard Hotel in Hollywood – located on Sunset Blvd, it has a really cool modern vibe and great location. We spent our days doing some vintage shopping on Melrose (where I found a pair of perfectly beat-up boots in just my size for a mere $20!), hanging out in Santa Monica – where we even went to the pier for the first time in years, and just lounging by the pool at the hotel, relaxing before a night out.

It was just what I needed before flying back to a cold, snowy (!) Northeast on Saturday.

A diary of a fashion blogger….

I love weekends, don’t you? Come Wednesday I’m lusting for Saturday morning to come. I wake up to the smell of French roast coffee and snooze until I’m ready to step foot outside of the cozy blankets. No alarm, no rushing just a peaceful mind looking forward to two days that you can dedicate to yourself. My mindset right now is all about HALLOWEEN. I decorated my house a little, placed a pumpkin amongst my flea market finds and a little Halloween man on top of my crate box.

I’m leaning towards an autumn leaf vibe; my aesthetic seems to be turning all rustic and autumnal from wearing dark floral prints to gathering earthly things for my home.

It’s that time of year again and I love it!

San Francisco Photo Diary

“Take another little piece of my heart…”

San Francisco is the only other city I’ve lived in besides Philadelphia.  A few years ago I drove across the country with a friend and when I got to San Fran I fell in love with it and decided I wasn’t leaving.  The vibe of the city is unlike anywhere else – a unique blend of creativity, individuality and a bit of artistic madness. It always brings to mind the Jack Kerouac quote:

“The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes “Awww!”

There’s a reason he, too, was drawn to the musical beat of San Fran.

The city is alive with music, all hours of the day and night – when I lived there it wasn’t, “what are we doing tonight?” it was “what show are we going to tonight?”  It’s a place where you never feel lonely, because even if you are alone you’ll always meet someone on the street or in the park or on the barstool next to you with a smile and a friendly ear. And it’s a city where no matter how big it is, or even if you’re at a festival with thousands of people, you can still run into an old friend.

Philly is my home but I will always love the city by the bay.

Brimfield Photo Diary

Some of our buyers have just come back from Brimfield’s one of the world’s largest flea markets. It’s in Massachusetts and happens 3 times a year May 8-13, July 10-15, and September 4-9.

A photo diary from Australia Fashion Week

We reached out to Mandy, our blogger friend at Oracle Fox, to guest blog for Free People from Australia Fashion Week. I was super excited that she was willing to do this for us, as it’s one of my favorite fashion weeks around, and we knew she would do a stellar job documenting it!

She documented the scene of great fashion and the beautiful relaxed lifestyle Australia has to offer. Here’s round 1 of her favorite shows. If you could go to any fashion week which one would you choose? Mine would definitely be Australia.

april catalog diary: day one, shooting with sasha

last week i gave you the low-down on hair and makeup and the lead-up to shooting, and now it’s time for the action to begin! here’s a behind the scenes look at shooting with sasha pivovarova.

being able to watch a world class model in action was such an awesome experience.  sasha blew me away- she was so sweet and soft spoken in person, and had a very graceful, swanlike presence on set.  her ability to strike completely unnatural poses and make them seem effortlessly natural is incredible.

we were all crazy about this outfit – the combination of the long-in-the-back raglan tee and mesh ombre skirt is to die for! i loved that she just wore socks with this look too, giving it a very relaxed loungy feel.

april catalog diary: day one hair and makeup

the theme for the catalog was the elements – contrasting a muted palette and soft colors for earth and air on day one with bold, bright colors and tribal elements for fire and water on day two.  keeping with this theme, the makeup on day one was very natural and clean, giving sasha pivovarova the appearance of not wearing any makeup at all. april catalog diary: day one

on a crystal clear thursday in january i took an early morning train up to new york city to meet up with our catalog team for the april shoot. anticipation and excitement were running through my veins as i listened to mellow tunes and thought about what the day ahead would hold – super model sasha pivovarova, one of my favorite photographers, guy aroch, exotic animals, and seeing our catalog team in action for the first time.

we shot at milk studios in NYC, an amazing space in the meatpacking district across from the chelsea market.  studio three would be ours for the next couple of days, a large and inviting space flooded with light and located at the end of a quiet hallway.

when i arrived our team was setting up for the day. the set and the lighting have to be perfect, the outfits are all hung up and organized, and hair and makeup begins.

our catalog team chatted over coffee and breakfast as hair and makeup was underway. the team typically consists of our creative director, art director, producer, a stylist, hair and makeup artists, and the the photographer and photo/tech assistants.

the clothes were separated into two racks to correspond with the catalog’s element theme – day one was  air and earth, consisting of a soft color palette, natural makeup and all white animals. day two’s theme would be fire and water, with bright colors and tribal accents.

our stylist, creative director and art director looked over the outfits and made some last minute changes.

guy aroch arrived and got set up, taking a couple test shots to make sure the lighting was just right. i was so nervous to meet him but he’s extremely laid back and cool.
