november catalog chapter three: the sketchbook
“beauty begins when pencil hits paper… the sketch comes alive with swatches and trims, transformed into an enchanting ensemble. the muse is awakened. each design idea is created with the beauty of the free people girl in mind. she’s special, one of a kind.”
this is my favorite section of the book. i love the simplicity of the layout – studio shots against a white backdrop, highlighted by sketches of the designs and swatches of fabrics to draw you in. i adore the little sketches – i wish i could draw like this!
this section features models suvi koponen and jessica mau, who were photographed in a new york studio by the amazing dan martensen – he also shot our february 2010 catalog in california and our april 2010 catalog in morocco. these are two of my favorite shots in the entire book:
his portraits always manage to exude so much grace and simple beauty. here are some from his portfolio that i love:

a delicious snack
i would NEVER have thought to combine these things, but i am not kidding you – it is so delicious:
start by toasting fruit and nut bread (this one was from whole foods)
drizzle olive oil on the bread
spread guacamole on the bread
add some brie cheese
top with green grapes
and enjoy :)
friday fun with grizzly bear
i took a little tour of the office with grizzly bear today and man does she have it good… everywhere she goes people want to give her hugs and kisses and treats! here’s a look at a day in the life of a free people pup :)
where to first?
to give kisses to our graphic designer!
and hugs for one of our designers :)
the leash in the mouth means she’s ready to move on…
this treat smells yummy but it’s a little too big!
what, no more treats?
checkin’ out some clothing samples…
taking five with another fp girl.
waiting for the elevator
testing a chair in the lobby
oh hey jemma!
and off down the hallway!
really?
it’s ok, i still love you.
seein’ what’s going on outside
posing in front of the bamboo
is that a real grizzly bear?
nah, it’s just toby!
time to go back to mom…
and get a treat for being so good :)
happy friday!

a lil sneak peek at something we did for the blog today :)
three records
there’s a very cool show opening at space 1026 in philly tonight – featuring the work of chrissy piper, an amazing photographer who shot our upcoming december catalog! the show consists of portraits from her 3 records series, in which she asks the people she photographs to name three records that changed and/or inspired their lives. i think its such an amazing concept, and makes the portraits so much more personal.
also, two of our very inspiring fp girls were photographed for the 3 records series, so i wanted to share their portraits and their responses with you :)
our creative director:
and our videographer:
here’s a preview of the show from the space 1026 website:
also check out more of chrissy piper’s work on her website – i can’t wait to show you some shots from our december book, she did such an awesome job!
this of course got me thinking about how i would respond to the 3 records question. my answers are probably pretty typical but i think i would have to say…
bob marley’s legend, not because i think its the best collection of his music, but because that album to me represents my happiest childhood memories, being at the beach with my family. the beatles rubber soul, which my best friend in grade school gave me (on cassette), and sparked my obsession with the band that is still going strong. and bob dylan’s blood on the tracks because it got me through a really difficult time, and still does when i’m having a bad day.
what are three records that changed and/or inspired your life? i’d love to hear :)
office style – twins!
hwe had a couple of twin spottings in the office yesterday! first, wearing the we the free motoring in fleece jacket:
and next the directions in lace maxi slip:
i love seeing how people style the same items differently!
holiday fashion show
a couple of months ago we had a big meeting at the home office with all of our store managers from across the country. as part of the meeting we had a free people holiday fashion show featuring some of the looks from our november catalog on models and on some of the girls who work here in the office. it was so fun seeing everything go down a runway – and now that the catalog’s out i can show you some pictures that one of the managers snapped during the show!
they all looked amazing – but wee people stole the show :)
our holiday displays are going up in all of our stores next week and i can’t wait to show you photos, they’re breathtaking!

wednes-diy
i saw this on poppytalk today and i couldn’t resist sharing. did any of you guys ever make “god’s eyes”? i never have but they’re so awesome looking and simple to make. just tie two sticks together and weave the yarn around them, starting at the center – to see a quick tutorial on exactly how to wrap the yarn, click here. plus you can play around with the colors to get some really pretty combinations – they’d make lovely little table decorations or even christmas tree ornaments!
i also love the pieces of driftwood wrapped in yarn – it reminds me of this photo from our office that i posted not too long ago:
