I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much human beings rely on each other. From random acts of kindness on behalf of a stranger, to the everyday support and warmth we receive from friends and family, we’d be utterly lost without each other. Think of how nice it is when you have your arms full and somebody holds the door for you. Or, how grateful you are when your roommate does your dishes just because. That’s not to say that you just take, take, take, however. Maybe you help and old woman with her suitcase on the train, or get your roommate back by preparing a delicious dinner.

It’s all a cycle of giving and receiving. I like to think of it as teamwork survival. Society and life are all a big machine of people working together. When you think about it, there’s a feeling of security and warmth in that.

We get by on the kindness of others, so do something nice for somebody just because it will help them out or make them happier today. Be a team player, work together, and fill your role.

So true. One can have all the material goods, dream~career or travel the world over. Without cherished loved ones to share good/bad fortune with…..life is just a cluster of empty holes, always needing to be filled.

Blogger’s Diary – The sweet scent of Fall

November 14th, 2011 / Posted by fp jemma / Permalink

This weekend I enjoyed the feeling of Fall, the leaves have turned all fiery here in Philly. The rustic leaves brings a vintage feel, a feeling of age and decay that I’m drawn to; throughout my life I’ve loved the juxtaposition of the beautiful and the ugly finding old buildings and seeing the beauty in them. This nostalgic feeling comes flowing into me during fall – the trees decay ready to transform into something beautiful come spring. I kinda love that.

After a scrumptious brunch at one of my favorite restaurants here in Philly “Parc” that recalls the chic brasseries of Paris and a long walk in my vintage French military boots I returned home and got be-dazzled by party hats for these coming festive months – DIY soon perhaps!

Happy Monday all!!

I love going to the movie theaters. The whole experience from handing your ticket to the usher and finding a seat, to diving completely into a movie is enchanting. There’s something about the larger than life image and surrounding sound that pulls you into the story in a way that just can’t happen elsewhere. I often find myself getting lost in the fantasies – awestruck.

Needless to say, going to the movies is magical fun, and well, matinees are cheap. Save yourself some money and leave the nighttime for other endeavors. Hit up a matinee this afternoon. I’ll finally be checking out Martha Marcy May Marlene, what are you going to see??

Some people seem to have it down pat. They are who they are with no inhibitions. Others don’t come by it as easily. I surely used to be more of the latter type when it came to letting myself just be. I held back and as a result, at times felt like there were few or no people who could understand me. After going through life-changing stages – living in a foreign country, heading off to college, entering the real world – one of the most important things I’ve learned is to not hold back. One of the best way to make friends is to let your colors show – insecurities and all. It gives people something to connect with you over, and something to like about you. It’s not so bad to stick out for being different. A lot of the time, that’s what people like about you. Who likes their best friend because they’re exactly like everybody else? Nobody. You like your best friend because of the stupid jokes they tell you when you’re sad, or the funny way they laugh everytime they’re embarrassed. Defining characteristics and mannerisms are what make you you. Embrace it. Embrace your youness, and travel through this world more comfortable and confident.

Free People Through the Decades: The 1920s

October 31st, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Last week you saw a sneak peek of our holiday catalog, which explores the influential decades of the 1920s, 50s, 70s and modern day.  The catalog is now online and each week we’ll be exploring one of these decades here on the blog!

Chapter One: The 1920s

Paris in the twenties – a magical place and magical time.  When the “Lost Generation” found itself and found its voice in Left Bank cafes and cabarets. Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway.  James Joyce and Pablo Picasso.  Josephine Baker and F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Freedom, jazz, and love and joy.

1920s Free People Through the Decades: The 1920s

Clockwise from top left:

Ernest Hemingway, pictured in his army uniform, who popularized the phrase “une generation perdu,” or Lost Generation, in his novel The Sun Also Rises. The term referred to the generation that came of age during the first World War, and included other writers and artists like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein.

The automobile became a widespread means of transportation in the 1920s, when Ford introduced the affordable Model T.  Pictured is a Crossley, a popular car in 1920s Europe.

A shot from our holiday book that captures the 1920s Parisian cafe scene.

An example of 1920s fashion; the 1920s were a time when women were liberated from constraints – they wore flapper dresses, pants, and skirts that bared their calves, menswear style shoes and cloche hats that covered their short bobs.

One of the most iconic novels to come out of the 1920s was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.  Set in 1920s New York, his words paint a picture of glamour and sadness, and of the lost generation that was struggling to find itself.

One of the most influential fashion figures of the 1920s, and still today, was Coco Chanel. She was an innovator in setting trends of the 1920s like menswear-inspired fashion, and launched the famous Chanel No. 5 perfume in 1921.

Stay tuned for more on the fashion of the 1920s and behind the scenes from our shoot in Paris!

Sometimes you just need to sleep in and not feel an ounce of guilt about it. Life is go go go, and there are ten million things you want to do. It’s easy to forget how exhausted you are sometimes. Or maybe you take note, but that doesn’t stop you from packing more things into your day and limiting the hours of sleep.  Take advantage of the weekend. Don’t set an alarm, and sleep until your heart desires. Hang out, read a book, cuddle with your pet, and take time getting up. Just for once, don’t rush yourself, and relish in the sea of calm. The body needs this to rebuild. It’s healthy to do once in a while, and there’s absolutely no reason to feel bad about it.
